HIS YEAR CULMINATES A CENTURY OF GROWTH for our Golden State. A golden century, indeed, it has been. One hundred years ago, San Francisco was a quiet, sleepy, little Spanish settlement on the shores of a great bay. lt had been thus for two centuries and probably would have remained as such for many years more except for an accidental discovery of a yellow metal-GOLD. This occurred at Colma, January 24, l848. The full impact of this important discovery was not felt in the populous east until the first month of the following year. lt penetrated and stimulated the imagination of men not only in the United States but throughout the whole world. All these people had a common goal. They sought the wealth that was theirs for the seeking on a new frontier. Thousands of these adventurers came, poor. in material wealth but rich in the spirit of adventure and youth. They came with the high hopes and ambitions of youth. Many sought but few found the material wealth. When the first flush of the fever had- subsided, they stopped to look around, They saw a country of much promise with a wealth greater than gold. It was with the' same enthusiasm and strength that is so characteristic of youth that they set forth to establish a new civilizaion in the western frontier. Aswe look around us a century later and evaluate the heritage left to us by these pioneers, we are aware that they built well and had a far- seeing vision. The youth of today are no less adventurous nor ambitious than their predecessors. lt is within their power, during the next lOO years, to go throughout this glorious state and build upon an already sturdy founda- tion, a superstructure that will tower for future generations. As the stream of gold has run through the history of our Golden.State, so it runs through this book, interwoven with the golden dreams of youth. May the days you spent at Commerce always be a source of golden mem- ories. 'F Q .1-'I
