HE LD BU I ESS CULLEGE VAN NESS AVENUE AT POST ORdWay 3-5500 SAN FRANCISCO SAN JOSE. SACRAMENTO OAKLAND - Van Ness at Post 10 Notre Dame 9th and J 2090 Broadway l HIS YEAR CULMINATES A CENTURY OF GROWTH for our Golden State. A golden century, indeed, it has been. One hundred years ago, San Francisco was a quiet, sleepy, little Spanish settlement on the shores of a great bay. lt had been thus for two centuries and probably would have remained as such for many years more except for an accidental discovery of a yellow metal-GOLD. This occurred at Colma, January 24, l848. The full impact of this important discovery was not felt in the populous east until the first month of the following year. lt penetrated and stimulated the imagination of men not only in the United States but throughout the whole world. All these people had a common goal. They sought the wealth that was theirs for the seeking on a new frontier. Thousands of these adventurers came, poor. in material wealth but rich in the spirit of adventure and youth. They came with the high hopes and ambitions of youth. Many sought but few found the material wealth. When the first flush of the fever had- subsided, they stopped to look around, They saw a country of much promise with a wealth greater than gold. It was with the' same enthusiasm and strength that is so characteristic of youth that they set forth to establish a new civilizaion in the western frontier. Aswe look around us a century later and evaluate the heritage left to us by these pioneers, we are aware that they built well and had a far- seeing vision. The youth of today are no less adventurous nor ambitious than their predecessors. lt is within their power, during the next lOO years, to go throughout this glorious state and build upon an already sturdy founda- tion, a superstructure that will tower for future generations. As the stream of gold has run through the history of our Golden.State, so it runs through this book, interwoven with the golden dreams of youth. May the days you spent at Commerce always be a source of golden mem- ories. 'F Q .1-'I l . I 1 VT 1 x A ' is Rt ' ? I . Lehman OUR PRINCIPAL Across the span of one hundred years, we today salute our pioneers. ln recalling their heroic stature, youth is likely to regret the loss of those days of adventure-sailing across the ocean, rumbling in heavy wagons across the plains, climbing mountains, fording rivers, fighting the red Indians-all to reach the land of gold. But when has there been a greater pioneering age than in this century, now approaching its second half? Soon the air will be charted as fully as are the seas, and an adventurous pioneer may blaze the path to inter-planetary travel. Science has passed from guess and hazard and theory into the realm of exactness, medicine has brought almost a new race in the physical perfection of youth. Health now is not a goal to be desired, it is an accepted condition. But all this has been brought about by pioneers in the field. Once the world has freed itself from the havoc wrought by the late war and peace has asserted itself throughout the world, the entire continent of Asia will eagerly await the young pioneers from the West, who will speed the development of its nations. The land, the water, and the air have been conquered by pioneers. Science, education, religion, culture, have had their pioneers. There is a new field of pioneering which is changing the history of the entire world-this is the field of govern- ment. The political world is now an individualistic world, in which each member counts, not only as one unit of a collective group, but as of himself. Every barrier of color, of race, of religion, is down. No longer is it WHO the individual is, but WHAT he is doing that counts. No longer are you measured by where you have been, but by where you are going. Youth today has the chance of glorious pioneering. lt has been given every opportunity and every advantage, including education free and unlimited, The services of the world are at its beck and call. Each boy, each girl, may carve out the future he or she desires. The responsibility, the opportunity is his- to be the pioneer who will achieve his own destiny. Only, as you go from this school out into the life of the larger world, don't sit on the side lines and watch the other fellow pioneer. Life offers its treasures for the asking, select your plan of life and fulfill it. And that all good fortune and success accompany you throughout your lives is the sincere wish of your PRINCIPAL. SUR DEAIXIS To the Graduates: A golden aura led the '49ers, the Argonauts and the pioneers of a century ago, to brave the hardships of the long trek to California and adventure . . . here to overlay as a patina, another civilization on the pas- toral heritage of this remote province that once was Spain's and later, Mexico's. These '49ers for the most part were young and had the hopes and ideals of youth to spur them on. This year from the Mother Lode mining towns to Ports- mouth Square in San Francisco, where the replicas of the first schoolhouse, the first hotel, and the first jail are being erected, the fiesta spirit is on, and you are a part of it. lt is a great privilege for you to be modern pioneers in l949. California today has a lure of adventure and a promise of material success for those who will work for it. There is still gold in the forest-covered slopes of the Sierra, in the more practical white gold, carried along copper wires from the great hydro- electric power plants to the teeming cities the pio- neers founded, in the black gold of the state's rich oil wells, in the brown earth, once golden with pop- pies, but now yielding the gold of citrus groves, or- chards, vineyards, and field crops. All the resources that have made California great in the century inter- vening, are yours . . . to use and to conserve. So, forward-looking young citizens of this great state, and of this, your city on its matchless bay by the Golden Gate, build well for all time, and as the pioneers entrusted this rich glorious heritage to you, transmit it to the future generations, made greater by the scope of your achievements. l shall remember with pleasure this year at Com- merce, working with you graduates, underclassmen and the fellow teachers. I have enjoyed with you the splendid spirit in which you have supported your school and its activities, and l am happy that l, too, have been privileged to be a part of this, your Record of the golden days of l949. My best wishes go with you, now and always. Laurence M. Childers Assistant Principal and Dean of Boys Mary T. Clarke Assistant Principal and Dean of Girls Congratulations to the boys and girls of the grad- uating class of June, l949. Looking back to four years of high school living, you see yourselves as in- dividuals participating actively or quietly in all forms of school life. Some see themselves as student body officers, classroom officers, or leaders of the various school organizations. A few will see themselves as non-participating individuals concerned chiefly with sitting on the side-lines and watching the show go by. ln some way these last have missed the joyous satis- factions that come from active participation in group living. The wishful thinking that colors the future is apt to hide the fact that the contributions made to school living have outlined a pattern of life that is likely to be followed. The world will never be bigger than we are. On the other hand, there is a thrilling challenge in the thought that the world can be better because we are in it. Whatever the pattern of your school living, life now holds for you a vital role, if you will but play the part. Each one of you is an individual and a social being, and the royal road to happiness will be found in the acceptance of individual responsibility and in- dividual initiative for the common good of all. You count, and even the most obscure person can be very important. Have you heard the story of the match? lt origi- nated in Hollywood shortly after the close of the war. A very interesting and realistic war pageant was be- ing shown in the huge amphitheatre, with lO0,000 persons present. War paraphernalia, artillery, then, suddenly, complete blackness! Out of this blackness that huge concourse heard a voice saying: You think you are unimportant and your job is unim- portant because it is such a little job. You are wrong. The most obscure person can be very important. Anyone here who wants to exercise a far-reaching influence may do so, Let me show you what l mean. With that the speaker lit a match, and its tiny flame piercing the darkness was seen by all. Spon- taneously, everyone then struck a match, and the brilliant illumination that resulted turned that vast blackness to light. Are you less important than a match? mimi, lllX ' g,,Q P'.. H EALTH CLU B Strange as it seems, the Health Club is probably one of the most important clubs in our school. The,Club is formed in Room l5 for the purpose of training boys and girls how to act in case of emergency. The Club's principal tasks are to learn to care for the sick, give first aid to minor iniuries, and to learn office work. The reason for this being the most im- portant club at Commerce is because so many lives have been saved by skillful first aid workers. This Club is not devoted to work all the time, but at least once a year a party is sponsored by Mrs, Schoch, the Club Advisor. The Club is always looking for boys and girls who are interested in learning about health. Every year the Health Club picks their officers for the following terms. This year the officers are: Pres., Helen Dunbarg Vice-Pres., Annette Fresanag Treas., Thelma Telturej Sec., Jennce Cuschiere. Yi, , , , , K.. . . . ,i,'.' 1 X -J Q Cv A ' .L Q ff if Q O .5 , Q! The first touchdown was scored by Commerce. Our lone touch- down came when Ed Salcedo passed a short on to Glue-fingers Charlie Boyd. This one touchdown was a big enough margin to put us in the win column. ln the third quarter the Indians went on the warpath and came back to tie up the game. But the boys were a bit taut in their first game and were unable to capitalize on scoring chances. The score was 6 to 6. BUCS SLICE BULLDOGS 7-0 Winning in the last minutes of play, Balboa defeated Commerce 7 to 0. Balboa, using a Notre Dame box formation, was held in their own backyard most of the first period. The first two times they penetrated the Bulldog's IO yard stripe, they were slapped back by penalties. The officials marched off lO5 yards in penal- ties against Bal and 50 against Commerce. An inter- ception set up the Bucs touchdown. BULLDOGS ROLL For the first nineteen minutes, Galileo held Com- merce, but after that it was a slaughter. Winning by the score of 32 to O, the Bulldogs first touchdown was made on a pass from Walt Cranshaw to Charlie Boyd. Halfback Ed Salcedo turned in a beautiful piece of running when he intercepted a Lion pass and raced 72 'yards for another Commerce touchdown. On the succeeding kickoff by Alva Joseph, the ball sailed into the end-zone where no attempt was made by Galileo to recover the ball. Bill Rodiak. pounced upon the ball and added another 6 points to the Bulldogs' growing score. PARROTS BITE BULLDOGS Going on a scoring spree, Poly defeated Commerce 5l-l2, its fifteenth straight victory. Aided by Elvin Colburn, who scored three touchdowns, the Parrots were the rulers in this game. Commerce's touchdowns came in the last period. The first score was set up when Charlie Boyd recovered a Poly fumble on the Com- merce l2. From there Ed Salcedo passed to Bill Rodiak for the score. Commerce took to the air again, and in two plays, padded 73 yards to the Poly four. Cranshaw McClure, McGrath, Mendez, Morton, Pudarich, Racchi, Roosakas, Rigsby, Rodiack, Romero, Salcedo, Smith, McGregor, Yep, Yaich, E. Yaich, Lanzavecchia. Managers-Rogers, Mikkelson, Rockwell, Bartolotti. UAD lugged it over from there. Well, anyway, Commerce scored more points against Poly than any other team at the close of the I 948 season. LINKS ARE VICTORIOUS Pass interceptions helped the Mustangs to beat the Bulldogs l9 to l2. lt was the Bulldogs third loss against one win and one tie. Commerce tied the game 6 to 6 when Joe Kocher took a reverse and passed to Mack Calhoun for a play that was good for 47 yards. The Links won the game by intercepting two Bulldog passes. Salcedo's pass intended for Rodiak was intercepted by Huxley on the Commerce 42. Huxley hit pay dirt with- out being touched for Lincoln's second touchdown. Lincoln cinched the game when Walt Cranshaw's pass was intercepted, and Lincoln, gaining possession of the ball, paved their way to their third touchdown. Alva Joseph cracked over left guard for the last Commerce touchdown. BULLDOGS, WILDCATS DEADLOCK At the middle of the turf of Kezar Stadium, Com- merce and St. Ignatius fought to a O-0 tie. St. Ignatius was delayed in their bid for -a spot in the play-offs by this tie. Although the Wildcats had four opportunities to score, they were unable to break the deadlock. Commerce got a real scare in the last quarter when a clipping penalty and a blocked punt put the lgnatians on the Commerce I8. With less than two minutes to go, Levis Martin plunged for a 6 and an end sweep picked up 9 more yards. COMMERCE MISSION GAME Ending the season gloriously and playing one of their greatest games of the year, the Commerce Bulldogs defeated the Mission Bears 7 to O. The strong defensive play of both of the teams was of particular interest. Strictly a defensive game from the beginning to the end, it was a marvelous sight when in the last quarter, Commerce held the Bears for four downs on the one foot line. It was one of the greatest goal line stands that has been seen in a long time. Commerce's lone touchdown was rnade by Charlie Boyd, who recovered a Mission fumble in the end zone. A sensational game was played by George I-lart who was responsible for the fumble. Hart tackled a Mission player with such ter- rific force, the ball plopped out of his hands and rolled into the end zone where Charlie Boyd recovered it for a touchdown. Joe Kocher made the extra point when he drop kicked. LOWELL INTERCEPTS Charlie Boyd ll2i, Commerce end having a pass intercepted by two Lowell men. LONG KICK TO POLY Le Grande Foreman getting off one of his long kicks in the Poly game. MISSION'S LINE SKIRTED Wilbur Brown, speedy halfback going around right end. Also in the picture are Charlie Cook C251 and Al Lanzavecchia 1225. LOWELL STOPS KOCH ER Halfback Joe Kocher being stopped by practically the whole Lowell team after he returned a kickoff. ONE POLY DIDN'T GET Although we lost to Poly, Mack Calhoun made a fine catch for a long gainer as the picture illustrates. COMMERCE CRASH ES TH ROUGH Walt Cranshaw, Commerce fullback being stopped by two Lowell men. Next to him are Charlie Boyd ll2D, Dick Amandoli l3lD, and Edmund Hayes l35i. Ill 1 ll P.-3 1 -as-6 - . SQCLHQ SQUAD . . , The Commerce High soccer team had its largest turnout in recent years but was almost completely dimiished due to transfers and ineligibility of many key players. Overcoming a manpower shortage the Commerce booters gained a tie for 5th place. The two victories for Commerce were against Lowell and Poly. The most thrilling game of the season was against Washington, the play-off champions, who were almost defeated by a stubborn defense set up by Coach Walt Lester. The difference in the final score was two cheap goals which our potential all-city goalie Sal De Santi could not reach. One was on a penalty kick that hit the sand and skidded over De Santi's head. The other was CHARLIE CALHOUN . . . RIGHT WING . . . excellent goal maker . . . high scorer of the team. RALPH CRESPO . . . RIGHT FORWARD a forty foot kick that barely grazed the goal post and' richocheted into the goal. Commerce tallied on follow ups by our hard charging forwards. The games this year were played at Beach Chalet which has fine soccer fields but the ocean breezes that blow make it no place for a soccer game. The high scorer for the team was that fleet-footed forward Ce Ce Calhoun who accounted for more than 6OfX9 of the goals scored. Sal De Santi, who doubles as the Varsity baseball catcher, was easily the outstanding goalie of the league although he did not play every game. MATT HARRINGTON . . . Moe was a great floorman and when he shot, which was very seldom, he rang the bell with amazing accuracy. Boyd was this year's version of Henry Chin. Heading the team in scoring, Charlie pushed them in with either hand. Mock came into his form of old in the last four games of the season, meshing most of his points on long swishes. The star of next year's team. Vince Caramango, Alex Maffei and little Casey Jones filled out the Bulldogs formidable group of basketeers. Opponent Played Winner Score Mt. Diablo Concord Mt. Al Sleepy Young, guard, was captain and was also one of the outstanding players along with Dave Lew, center, who led the team in scoring with 67 points in .nine games and made second string All City. The other three first stringers were Hanson Quock, speedy guard, William Lee, sharp shooting forward, and old reliable Low Chan, forward. 4 The second team also had very fine players. They set a new record, the time was 8:03.4. Rax and Stribling were also on the Com- merce Medley Relay team last year. This year's swimming team had a long and arduous season. At the beginning of the season many of the boys were not winning but by the time of the city meet they had their share of wins. Although they did not win a championship in all three weight divisions, they feel that they had a successful season. The team's success was due mainly to Mr. Callaway and his long hours of work with the boys. His previous experience in coach- ing, before coming to Commerce, proved valuable to him and the boys. Mr. Callaway liked the attitude and the spirit the team had and enjoyed working with them. BASEBALL sQuAD After ending up in first place at the end of the regular season, the Bulldogs dropped the play-offs to the Balboa Buc's after holding a 5-O lead during the play-offs. The Bulldogs were plagued by bad breaks. The season was highlighted by Al Maffei's no hit- no run game, a l-O affair against the slugging Sacred Heart Irish, also, the timely hitting of Wild Bill Rodi- ack and Sal De Santi, the versatile, who lead the team with .410 batting average. Ron Moberg swatted a health .323 and Al Maffei also belted the ball over the .300 mark for the slugging Bullpuppies. The team only dropped two games during the regu- lar season, these were to Balboa 3-2, and to Mission 5-2. Maffei wound up the season with a 3-ll record, fol- lowed by De Santi's 2-I, and Campbell's 2-0. Frank Zari, third baseman, a sensational hitter had the usual second year jinx-his hitting fell off to the 200 mark, and because of the lack of base hits, his fielding also fell off-but he still kept hustling and trying. Fred Cuneo turned out to be a first class receiver when De Santi was tossing them over for the Bulldogs. Fred came through with 9 hits in every game he played. In the Lincoln game he was the chief RBI threat to the Mustang's Dick Hanlon. ln the play-off he also smack- ed out timely hits. lSan Francisco Examiner Photo by Paul Burgess? CDUR ATHLETES . . . Commerce's sensational miler, Elwyn Stribling, who was clocked at 4:29.9, won every race he participated in this year. Another distance star who suffered only one setback all year was Lambert Rax. Commerce's best all around athlete, Joe Kocher, was put out of the roster by a sprained ankle, but his presence was an inspirational force for the squad. The replacement for Kocher was that able speedster Don Johnson. He was outstanding in the broad jump and the 220. The most improved man on the squad was Richard Estrada, our top hurdler. The l3O's were spear-headed by the undefeated shot-putter, Phil Racchi, and the fast little half-miler Lou Horton.
