• ■vli 4 A k i :K IK The CoinmeFce Record Hislh School of Commerce Fall 1946 -Spring 1947 - - -5t - c -y ' : COMMERCE THEX PilKMl Amidst the charred ruins of a once regal and imperial city arose the first structure of the High School of Commerce. From the earth- quake and fire of 1906 came a building, symbolic in its goal, trium- phant in its achievement. A new form of education was presented to the citizens of San Francisco. Sons and daughters of rich men, poor men, the middle class were sent to this new institution which taught the basic funda- mentals of business and commerce. Experimental in its day, it has proven that a knowledge of business combined with a background of science, English, foreign languages and customs results in intelli- gent young men and women. In the early days of Commerce only one building housed the many students who arrived each day from all sections of the city. But from that building emerged such personalities as Phyllis New- mann, Henry Pfister and Margaret Osborn. The early days of Com- merce are never to be forgotten. What is Commerce now? Two large buildings, library, auditorium and gymnasium cover one square block. An athletic field covers another. Located in the heart of downtown San Francisco, Commercites have been able, with- out so much as moving from their classrooms, to watch the city by the Golden Gate progress and develop. The United Nations Conference was their neighbor for two months, the Shriners paraded before their front windows. Students of the High School of Commerce received a panoramic view of the expansion of the most extraordinary city on the West Coast. Every race, color and creed is represented at Commerce and all work towards one objective: closer and more harmonious amity. The High School of Commerce, based on the essential doctrine Love thy neighbor as thyself , stands unique among Bay Area high schools, a tribute to the ideals of benevolence, friendship and under- standing. .1 ' A r V ? Firsts are pleasant memories to hold. The first High School of Commerce, as we know it now, might be considered to have sprung into being when what is now the old building was a new building moved from the Civic Center to its present site to house high school students. Commerce was one of the first public high schools in San Francisco. Since those momentous days of its birth, our school has been first in many things, but perhaps its most important first is its position in our hearts. fHEFIRSTPWNaPAL Mr. Ralph H. Lehman, Principal Our Principal At the year ' s end, while we are saying our goodbyes to school friends, we have in our minds memories of the past school days: of our fine sports and interesting clubs; of our daily lunchroom companions; of our classmates in other various school enter- prises. We also have certain hopes of things to come that we have planned for during our three or four years in high school. While these memories and these hopes are so vital to us, we remember too that the record earned at school stands to support these future plans — whether it is a transcript to college, a letter of recommendation to an employer, or just a record to use when the occasion so requires. There is, too, the record that is left in the mind of every- body: the distinguishing qualities, such as clean standards and solid work habits; being friendly and reliable; having a fine skill in writing or in drawing or in sports. How happy are all of us when we can say goodbye to our friends with the satisfaction that we have benefited from the school, and that the boys and girls, and the teachers, too, whom we have known are a little stronger and happier as a result of our brief stay in high school. Miss Mary T. Clarke, Dean of Girls Congratulations to the Graduating Class of June, 1947. Your page of High School history has been well written. Your many fine scholar ' ship records, and your outstanding contribu ' tions to happy school living through your as- semblies, clubs, school paper, and games, may rightly give you cause for pride and satisfaction today. Tomorrow you become world citizens. Your horizon will cover the whole world. You will 6nd that the avenues to success radiate to all parts of the world; and you will find, too, that your obligations will be broadened to include the welfare of all men as well as your own. You go out into an unsettled world of con- fusion. Your contribution to its betterment will not be unlike the contribution you made to happy school living, and the supreme effort of right doing — for yourself and for your fellow- man — are your only guide posts to success. ' All for one, and one for all ' is a grand motto for a shield. Will it be on yours? AUss Mary Clarke The Deans ' The whole is equal to the sum of its parrs. This familiar axiom is accurate when we are dealing with mathematical quantities. But when the quantities are human the axiom fails; for with human quantities we can make a whole that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Consider a basketball team for example- Five individual players on a basketball court, each playing for himself, would be a weak team no matter how good the players. But five men playing together, each supporting the others and working in combination with them, make a team that is full of power. You graduates have, by working together, made at Commerce a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. You will continue to find that whatever your field of activity you can multiply the results of your efforts by team- work and cooperation. We wish for you the best of success, and continued membership on the team. Mr. Joseph Hill Mr. Joseph B. Hill, Dean of Boys Facility Anderson, Miss Edith S. Spanish. Miss O ' Malley ' s fine classical education, broad travel, and passionate love of reading have enabled her to teach English so effectively that even the most reluc- tant student has been led to understand, to appreciate, and to love the masterpieces of our language. In the last two years, other of Miss O ' Malley ' s talents have been used for the benefit of the school. She has brought to bear on her problems as Registrar a calm judgment and a keen sense of fair play ' which have made her service in this position outstanding. The faculty and the students of Commerce want Miss O ' Malley to know that they will miss her and that they sincerely hope that her days of retirement will bring her everything her heart desires. Much of that spirit comes from the short registry sessions held each morning. Here the Student Body contacts its officers and the administration. The registry attends to the checking of attendance, giving out of passes, cutter slips to the ill-fated indi- vidual, and all other forms of business in which students are involved. Essentially important too, is the bulletin that is read during registry. It contains vital information necessary to the well being of the student such as club announce- ments, sports news, assembly information, and other items of news of interest and importance to the student. Registries Outstanding performance was rendered by Com- merce ' s registries during the past year in supporting drives helpful to the school, the community, the city, the state, and the world. Donations are taken up in the registries and then sent to drives. One example of the registries ' assistance is the support they gave to the March of Dimes cam- paign which aids children suffering from the dread disease, infantile paralysis. Semi-annually the goal of each registry is 100% in the purchase of student body cards. Our last sale showed that over 95% of the students bought cards. Athletic teams, clubs and school publications benefit directly from these sales. HIGH 11 REGISTRY 209 TOP ROW: Hamilton, Moore, Prior, Luscotoff, J., Rosano. Orphans Receive To aid needy children through a fund, all registries contribute to the gay festivities of the Spring carnival held in the courtyard annually. Another example of the humane everreadiness of Commerce students is the helping hand that aids or- phans in the war-ravished countries of the world. Col- lections taken up in the registries are sent to the war orphans. Eleven charitable registries each adopted a child alone last year by donating a minimum of fifteen dollars a month for three semesters. They are rooms 20C, 26, 38, 101, 211, 214, 311, 313, 180. 24, and 209. LOW n REGISTRY 3 TOP RO S-: Glasser, Preston, Harris, Koo. THIRD ROW : Meneguzzi, Plante, Veach, Frisbie, Wheeler, Rillera. Registries Serve Organizations such as the Community Chest and the Red Cross have been aided by Commerce High through the registry rooms. The main source of contact with the Student Body is through the registry officers who attend meetings and take part in the discussions. From these meetings and others the ofEcer goes to his or her registry and deh ' vers highlights of the meeting, which, in most cases, contain important messages. Responsibihty to the group is a feeHng that must be included in the duties of the registry officers, and officers are well chosen when this is fulfilled. He conducts class business and often takes the roll for the teacher and reads the bulletin. Absenteeism is the dreaded word which sometimes means the difference between passing and not passing to a Commerce student, but when the registry president must be absent, there is a reliable substitute — the vice president. It is his job to relieve or assist the president in time of need. All writing or clerical work that has to do with regis- tries is transacted by the secretary. Voting for the different elections is tallied by this officer. LOW 10 REGISTRY 316 TOP ROW: Wells, Duzac, Chan, Rivera, Quinn, Yuen. Comineree Typewriters were clicking, voices were shouting, people were going in and out of room 116, the tele- phone was ringing and above it all was the cry of the erstwhile editor, Norman Gelman. Such was the Journal- ism Workshop, or as it is better known, the birthplace of the Commerce Spirit, in the fall, 1946. Louie Gonzales, the assistant editor, would allay the fears of his executive, while Kay Lazos worried her pretty little head over her feature pages. But despite the gray hairs ever increasing in the heads of their editors, the staff nevertheless managed to publish five issues during the term. Many new ideas were incorporated into this series and many are still being used in feature columns. The group also upheld its theory of distributing its papers on the day some activity was being held. In this way the Student Body always knew the details of every event. It was a sad day when the staff realized that their last paper had hit the stands, but they also knew that it was time for a new staff since all good things must come to an end. I§ipirit With deadlines constantly staring them in the face the Spirit Term 1947 was a continuous and buzzing body of reporters, out to scoop their fellow journalists and with their noses to the ground thinking up novel ways to present news and feature material. Your Spirit Staff presented the students of the High School of Commerce with five issues of the Commerce Spirit which seems like little, but actually was a big job. The editors, Joanne Painter and Dolores Davanis were kept busy seeing that reporters got their material in on time, seeing that a dummy was sent to the printer every three weeks, and planning those dummies so that the most news could be put in the limited amount of space with which they had to work. Each member of the Staff had the double duty of not only getting in Spirit material but also fulfilling his obligations to the Bulldog Record. Special thanks should now be extended to Nancy Yerby, Joan Hunt, Gloria Hansen, Jim Roumbanis, Joan Daigneault, Dale Perkins, and George Campbell who aided greatly in our publications. Behind the apparent melee in Room 116, Bulldog Record staff members were driving ahead with one purpose in view ... to meet the deadline. Student detectives ferreted out the names of photographed club members, typewriters clicked, the editor, Kenneth Langley, and advisor, Miss Hirschl, rapidly approached nervous breakdowns. Pictures were cut, pasted, torn, lost, bemoaned. Throngs of sightseers and well wishers flowed in and out, always underfoot, hanging over pic- tures, spilling glue, mixing up vital papers. Inspired staff members did art work . . . and redid it. Desperate journalists wrote columns . , . and rewrote them . . . eyes on the calendar and clock. And then came the date . . . the deadline was met, the book done. 116 drew itself up, heaved one deep sigh of relief, and settled back into the solid Commerce foundations, only a little worse for wear. Bnlldog Musieianis Echoing through the halls of Commerce, melodic strains of singing instruments and youthful voices lilt to familiar strains, constantly rehearsing to attain that degree of skill that now makes our orchestra, band, and glee club ever welcome at assemblies, rallies, and dances. Always ready with a tune to make the feet dance or the pulses jump is the school band — led by Instruttor Mr. Riley. For more solemn moments, the orchestra strikes up to create a mood or accompany a soloist. An enjoyable part of many of our assemblies are the pleasing voices of the chorus, lifted in a gay tune or reverent Christmas carol. Directed by Miss Martin, the vibrant voices entertain and serve to create special moods at many of Commerce ' s assemblies dedicated to the more serious side of school life. Gridiron Memories Opening the season with its new coach, Ed (Red) Smith, the Commerce football team was very much underrated, but it took the Bulldogs just two weeks to prepare themselves for the St. Ignatius game. The Wildcats were the class of the league, and the Bull- dogs were heavy underdogs. To the surprise of all. Commerce turned back the Saints 9-0. Next came the powerful Balboa Bucs and they, too. met their master in the rampaging Bulldogs. Again the count was 9-0. Soon the Galileo Lion fell before the powerhouse Blue and White 32-6. The next contest was about the most thrilling witnessed all season. Playing their rivals. the Lowell Indians. Commercites were making good of yardage but couldn ' t score. With fourteen seconds left to play, Henderson passed to Rudometkin. The ball was bottled down by a Lowell defender. Before the ball hit the turf, Goodin scooped it up and went another five yards to score the only and winning touchdown of the game. The last half of the season wasn ' t successful for Commerce. The first loss suffered was to powerful Lincoln, 13-0. Washington was taken 18-6, and Mission outbucked us 7-6. Commerce lost a thrilling 24-13 battle to Poly in the semi-final. Gonzales, §!tars of Tomorrow Commerce ' s football B squad, the farm club of the varsity, completed a successful season last year under the direction of Coach Ed Delman. Although this team played almost the same schedule as its big brother, the varsity, very little attention is given to the contest itself. The main reason for the B team is to find and develop the stars of tomorrow for the varsity. From the spring turnout it looks like Coach Delman did a fine job. Heading the list of new candidates for the varsity next season is Al Lan-avecchi. Al played fullback on the Goofs, but Coach Smith plans a call for him to fill the guard slot. Another top prospect is Rene Duzac, small but scrappy center. Duzac developed fast and impressed the coaching staff. James Woodward is another boy who may land a job with the varsity. James is big and quite fast. He looks like a fine blocking back. Along with these boys are a number of other lads that have promise and who will show their talents come September. M. H. Friednchsen who tips the Toledo over the 200 pound mark is one lad who is classified in this group. M. H. IS a tall blond lad who has his beef well distributed on a 6 foot, 1 inch frame. With two years of varsity ahead of him, he may develop into a fine lineman. Branislav Yaich, a huge hunk of man with a Slavic background, is another gridder who looks as though he will really develop into something terrific. Yaich has size and is fast. Robert Gray, a featherweight lineman has possibilities as a guard or center. With such a wealth of material coming up next season, Coach Ed Smith can look forward to a successful year. ■i4 Cinder iStars M,.rr,.w Ptrosso VIC BALTAZAR: Smooth-striding sprinter— one of Commerce ' s brightest high-jump hopes— a very good broad jumper. BOB EMERSON: Potential all-city— star of the 30 ' s hurdles and 100 yard dash— classiest light-w ' -eight in years. ELBERT HENDERSON: Star of the varsity low and high hurdles — placed first in every meet at press- time. JOE KOCHER: Another All-City man-pacing the 20 ' s to a great season— the man to watch when he puts on weight. AL LANZEVECCHIA: One of Commerce ' s most de- pendable dash men— versatile— good no matter what the event. PARK LEW: Flashiest sprinter to hit the league in a long time— All-City last season and shooting at it this year. TURK MORROW: All-City last season-does the century in 10:01 or less— a really great cinder man. JOE PEROSSO: Holder of the Valley record— pulling to do the half-mile in 2:03— Completes Commerce ' s well-rounded squad. They say fate runs m cycles, and it appears to be true. The jet teams which took State honors in the 1930 ' s seem to be born again in this year ' s track-men. Our varsity has come up with Henderson, who does the hurdles in 13 flat; and men like Lanzevecchia, Or- lovitz, Ribero, and Lew. The lightweights have discovered speedsters like Perosso, Baltazar, Emerson, Philpott, Ferrante, Kocher, Kortegaard, and Garcia. Some of these men have set times better than those of the old Champs. One of the few weaknesses of the squad is that they can ' t take their seconds and thirds. In all the meets, practically every first was taken by our squads, but the opposing teams came close by copping the place positions,— but all they did was come dose. Not only are they fast, but they have fight. Against S. I., Emerson was running the hurdles, and tripped on the first one. When he recovered he was eight yards behind the nearest man yet he went on to place second. All in all, Coach Smith ' s boys are making quite a splash this year, a splash that will leave its mark on the records. Winged Bulldogs Varsity 120 ' s BACK ROW: Hope, Lew, Hallett, Baugh, O.
