Hay the habits of reading, of thinking. and of analyzing situations with the various causes and effects have become so highly developed that they may be virtues of inestimalmle value, We, in America are facing a new age. a period of marked transi- tion. the tendencies of which one sees and hears constantly. To cope with these serious confronting problems. there will be urgent. need of the highest form of citizenship. The introduction of intricate machinery together with many other factors such as the decline of the smaller villages and cities and the condition of the American farmer. have shattered our boasts of great prosperity and security. for these seem to lie farting before our very eyes. One needs but to delve into the pages of history to tind that several nations have risen to great heights only to have their pros- perity and success contribute to their own decay and ultimate down- fall. Lately. the United States has gained an important position in the history of the world. Will America continue to be the land ofhope and promise or will she too meet this same fate? Does it not lnehoove us to be constantly on our guard lest our own country comes to the same unfortunate ending that other countries before her have expe- rienced? The future and destiny of our country lies largely in the hands of the young people in our schools. colleges. and universities ol' today. lt is my hope that you feel prepared to take your part intelli- gently. seriously and courageously. The score, after the final echoes of the gun sounded, read 25-14 in favor of the Parrots. A team very seldom looks good in defeat, but the Commerce hoopsters, led by Houlihan and Medina, who score nine and four points respectively, assisted by other members of the team. who contributed brilliant offensive and defensive play. proved this theory to be a failure. COMMERCE vs. SACRED HEART The Bullpups completed a successful season against a somewhat surprising Irish team by the score of 29-25. Individual scoring honors Went to Captain Houlihan with ten digits. Medina, Chin, VVolf, and Ebert also found the hoop to their satis- faction. COMMERCE vs. ST. IC-NATIUS There were no four extra periods necessary to decide the winner of the game this season. The Bulipups defeated the lightweight cagers from St. Ignatius by the sound score of 31-16. All of the blue and white hoopsters gained in scor- ing honors after this game was over. Coach Yerducci used fourteen players in order that they might receive experience for future years. Chin was high scorer. with ten digits. while Medina followed with six. Celoni tallied four. while Thiebaut counted the same. New faces appeared in this game. .Xmong them were Hyder. tlradias. lfbert. lirerett. and McCon- nelt. COMMERCE MISSION The Little Big Game proved to be a dis- gusting tussle. No opposition was furnished by the Niission Cub, so the game proved to be a rout, the score being 32-IT. This was the Hullpups' most decisive victory of the season. There was no stopping a pup by the name of 1 .iss 1 Houlihan, and he played a leading part in de- moralizing the Mission team. He came through to capture high scoring honors with eleven digits, while Rouse who replaced him also gar- nered a few tallies. He amassed four poinLs, while Medina did likewise. Score 35 to 22. The Balboans forged into the lead in the early' stages of the game and were never threatened by' the Commerce hoopsters who failed to show the form that they had possessed in the practice games earlier in the season. Outstanding play' was featured when Sehlech. he playing his first AAA. basketball game scored five points. COMMERCE vs. LOWELL To win the second game of the season. that with Lowell, the Bulldogs would have to stop a couple of all-city' candidates in Burness and Harris. Luisetti Burness stopped. This is only' one side of the story: Commerce hoopsters stopped Burness. but in doing so. let. two very' capable ball-handlers by the name of Harris and lgnodo score twenty-nine digits. The Bulldogs put up a stubborn battle, but met a stone wall. The Lowellites were taking revenge for their being defeated by' the blue and white tive last season. So they just added double-trouble in the victory' and it was 39 to 21-. which shows our team out- classed them last yfear. Eddie Kalfain did his part for the Bulldogs that afternoon by' sinking five field goals for a high total of ten, Other boy's who fared well. even in the face of defeat. were O'Looney'. Caselli. Kane and Koch. COMMERCE vs. GALILEO ln the next encounter the Commerce team met a rejuvenated Lion from tlalileo. lt looked to students from the blue and white institute that it would be the lirst victory' for the Bulldogs. but a young and very ambitious young man. whose name was llale. sank so many buckets that he brought. about the third defeat. lloward. one of the l,eague's leading scorers. was right behind. He scored eight points and was closely followed by teammates llarder. lxoch and Caselli. The final score in this contest was Iltt to il. COMMERCE vs. ST. ICNATIUS ln the game with SI. Ignatius, the Bulldogs displayed some of their early season form. but still could not reach the top of the ladder for a victory. The Commerce cagers led at half time by a small margin of two points. but when that whistle bleu for the third quarter there was a feeling in the Ht. Ignatius stands that the cause was not lost. COMMERCE vs. MISSION Satisfaction came to the loyal rooters from Commerce only to be of short duration. for down- hearterl they sank when the team from their Alma Mater went down to defeat after a thrilling game packed with excitement from start to finish. Their traditional rival, the Mission Bear, trounced them. Though they rallied slightly in the last two periods, the Commerce hoopsters could not over- come the lead held by the Bear. The game showed many spills and thrills. with numerous fouls called by the referee. We probably would have won this game were it not for points given to Mission by the three toss route. There were eleven digits handed to the Bears on a silver platter. Ed Harder was high scorer in this game with seven markers. closely followed by teammate OlLooI16Y. COMMERCE vs. POLY. The Bulldogs broke into the win column at the expense of the Polytechnic Parrots by a slim margin of one point. The score 26 to 25 tells of what a thrilling game was staged on the hardwood of Rezar Pavilion. The lead changed hands many times, even to the last minute. It looked like an overtime game for Commerce. or a defeat. but a timely last minute field goal by Ed Harder gave Commerce its initial victory. Harder was high scorer for the afternoon with eleven digits to his credit. Other big factors in the first Commerce victory were Howard. O'Looney. Kalfain and Caselli. Commerce came second with 2225. While other schools entered all their men Mr. Brillhart held out with many of his tracksters until May 4, the real day of the A. A. A. The treat of the day was when Ed Preston shattered the city mile record by clipping five seconds off the old mark. Time 4.31.6. t New Lowell Belay Becord.J Playing an important part was Frank Gibeau winning the -l L0 in 52.5, and then showing a burst of speed to capture the 880 relay. The relay team was composed of Wilbur Bartlett. Gerald McCann, .lim Calden and Frank Gibeau. Frank Stage chucked the iron ball -15 feet to take a first place in the shot-put division. The greatest track meet in the history of the A. A. A. left Lowell tracksters in amazement. They are still trying to find out what hit them. But it was our Bulldogs from the High School of Commerce, who showed superior strength to bring back the championship which they lost last year. Commerce squeezed out Lowell 36 to 35. Balboa was a surprise third with 25025 points. The standings of the teams. Commerce 31 to Lowell's 29. In this last event. the Indians had three outstanding men. lVlell Long, Brown and Lee to our last hope. Wilbur Bartlett a 100 to 1 shot. In order to win the championship Bartlett had to win the event. The bar stood at 5 feet 11 inches. Bartlett's best jump of the season was 5 feet 9 inches. Bartlett on his last jump at 6 feet 23g inches. cleared the bar by an inch to set a new A. A. A. record and win the champion- ship. Bartlett leaped to a first place in the broad jump. 21 feet l inch, followed by Little tWild Catj McCann. who took a second place. ln the high timbers. George Otis took a second. while Nate Howard followed with a third position. In the low barriers McDuffie sneaked into a second place. Leading all the way, Captain Frank tlibeau had too much pressure for the rest of the field in the lt-0. The time was the best since l9l5, t51.TJ. This makes the seventh straight year that the Bulldogs have won this event. tleorge Cassin came through with a third place in the half mile, run in record time by Stamps of Lowell. Time: Two minutes. .7 seconds. Frank Stages heave of the iron ball of 'IT feet 9 inches gave the Bulldogs another 5 digits. The three quarter mile relay was won by Balboa. followed by Commerce and Lowell. Time: 2 minutes 20,8 seconds. Commerce relay team! Lewis. Brownel. .lim and Keith Caldcn. Bartlett and Frank tlibeau. T UNLIMITED I 551 BASKETBALL PRE-SEASON DOPE By Henry Burns Stepping into action when the Fall term rolls around, Joe Verducci will develop a threaten- ing team for the A.A.A. crown. Although last year was not tops the Bulldogs will be out to avenge last season's defeats. Snappy new uniforms will be worn on the gridiron. the idea coming from Verducci, but he says Good looking uniforms do not make a football player. Verducci was known as one of the smallest. trickiest quarterbacks that California has ever had. His knowledge of the game will prove a big asset during the Bulldogs scramble for the A.A.A. crown. Barking the signals will be the blond haired Ed Baber, who has experience at the quarter- back position. Carlson, has the power and strength to play a big factor in the line. Taking over one of the backtield positions will be Ed Harder, playing his last year of competition. George Poppin will be shifted to a guard position. Jack Lansing looks good in delivering the pig-skin for the Bulldogs. A new comer to the squad is George Warner. Watch him! Little but mighty Zeiback looks for a job in the line. He is a veteran from last years team. Lee Stanfel will play center. and afterwards will back up the line. He has a chance for all city honors. A hard hitting linesman. Lou Quartararo, will make it tough for his opponents. Nate Howard is to take care of one of the flank positions. A game kid. Bill Collier. is all set to render his ser- vices for t.he Bulldogs. after recovering from a leg injury received last fall. Stolberg will play an important part at tackle. Another candidate for quarterback is John D'Artri. who ought to go places this year. Bill Luskutoff, one of the hardest hitting backfield men on the squad, will be at halfback, when the lineup is chosen. He will stop many touchdown drives. Malcolm Nlac-Phail will keep up the family tradition by stepping into his brothers shoes. Track boys will contribute to football for the blue and white. The snappy Calden brothers, Bartlett and Lewis are all set to go to town after they put the finishing touches on the cinder path. One of the best managers Commerce has ever had is Jerry La Rue. He is here, there. and every- where, always doing something for his team. He was manager of the basketball team. track. and will go through the season as manager of the football team. Many others will turn out. and from that group a star may be found. So with this line-up I can see a successful season for Yerducci and his Bulldogs. When he gets the boys in a huddle. his cry will be Ulieep your eye on the ball and play 'heads up' football. l5f1l SPORTS Cl-IART - Arm 1.17 Ap-we 1 M. In order to achieve our graduation we must pass through yfears of hard work and study: And so. to participate in the last parade we must pass through years of hard drill and the study of military' tactics. Those of us who make up that little detail that reviews the last parade. look back over the years to the days when we rookies became privates, first class. and were allowed to wear those single stripes on our sleeves: to the day' of our hfirst parade as officersf' then finally' to the days when we were the commanding officers of the battalion. To us graduating officers. these days when we were leading the battalion to greater victories. will remain most vivid in our memories. During the early part of the term the annual shooting match was held. and our team emerged in second place in the cit yn The Range Captain. Karl Maier, the Range Officer. Harold Blumen- shine. and the Range Sergeant. Roger Pries, devoted much of their time to helping the Rifle Team get in shape. Much credit also goes to Captain Schearer for his valuable instructions and aid. The high-point man at Commerce. and a member of the All-City' Team. was cadet Lt. Col. Lynes. During the month of April you saw the cadets who were drilling in the court early' in the mornings. and wondered what it was all about. They' were practising for the competition at the tlivic Auditorium. where Commerce showed that she is still one of the leaders. This year our band took part in the competition, and showed that they could drill and play' with the best of them. Cadet Drum Nlajor George Plato has had his hands full this term getting the band in shape, but he assures us that their showing at. the fkuditoriuni repays him for his efforts. The big event of' the year is the Annual lnspection. which takes place each spring. The first thirteen schools are known as honor schools, and the cadets of' those schools are per- mitted to wear the coveted red star on the coat sleeve. lfach spring the cadets ninst study' their theory. and practice their extended order drill and l'ifle exercises. The rifle exercises are done by' the entire battalion with the accompaniment of' the band. It is a very' impressive sight. to see two hundred and fif'ty cadets swinging through the exercises. So far every inspector has been well pleased with the rifle exercises, and it has counted in the final reckoning of the scores. This term wc have been almost overwhchningly' handicapped by being unable to use the field for extended order drill. but. by using the craniped quarters of' the court we were able to get the needed practice. - Despite all the obstacles, there is no doubt that when the final scores are lnade public, the flonuncrce liattalion will be alnong the leading honor schools. This year a new idea was inaugurated. Instead ofturning out with the entire battalion when the occasion arises. a provisional company has been f'orined to turn out.
