MISS DUDLEY HICKS-Home Economics Baylor Belton, B. S. It is a pleasure to have friends, and I hope I have made friends of my pupils. I give to the students of C. H. It involves many things, but above all the power of going out of one's self and appreciating what ever is noble and loving in the other. Abide a while with us please, and we will tell you some ol' our history, begrinningr with the day when we entered Comanche High as an enthusiastic bunch ol' lfreshmen. We'ye been here tour long years now, and during' each ol' these years we'ye done something' which helped to make Vomanche High School a more distinguished place. You see, we have always been very unusual. When we were l reshmen, we won, by :1 large majority, the A1'row-Head contest. And we were a live, penny bunch of Frcslnnen always, and we certainly did furnish our quota of .nen lor football as well as students to take part in literary ex ents. Then, as Sophomores, we furnished a team to eo with the Seni0r's team. and together we beat the Juniors and Fish, in a class football game. The two yell leaders were Sophs that year. and the declaimer and extemporaneous speaker too. And oh! what shining! lights we were in football, and what a brilliant success we made when the Sonhs took in the most subscriptions to the Squaw, thus winning that contest too. WVhen we were Juniors, the school certainly knew that they had never yet seen Juniors who compared with us. Such pep! Such school spirit! Vile certainly did more than our part in both literary and athletic events. Also-please remember that prac- tically all 011 the 'tWhose Who page were Juniors. Another unusual thing' that we put oyer in our Junior year was the big Junior-Senior picnic, when we entertained the Seniors who said they wanted something' dii'l'erent. XVell, we grave them some- thing' dil'l'erent with a bie picnic at the Narrows. lt was certainly the event ol' the year. fi .. , I ,,. ji' lf? - . 4757- - ,J-7' S:-E .fif f' 'f' S sz - - -ff -M fp -'or.?i5ji1 2 'I Q.:-f .. h, ,r 0 O I ! Chiel' and the Business Managrer of the A1'row-Head, the Staff . Poet and the Social Editor, also Debaters, Essayists, lixtem- f l poraneous Speaker, Tennis Players, Singers, and Oh! so many l that we Cannot Count them all. VVe have helrl our own with the luniors in the Class games. and we astonished the whole school with the program we gave in chapel. l Remember please, the last verse ol' our class poem: So here's the song' we sing' to you- Our class is certainly fine! Here we are the Juniors cf '29! We are few in number but diobollcoly spreading, and taking it all around like a barrel instead of flat like a table, we still consider ourselves the best in school when it comes to being good sports and good students. Now getting down to bare facts and the naked truth, and from a spasmotic standpoint, we still maintain that we, the Junior Class of '29, have accomplished about as much and maybe more in some cases than other classes. C C Social Events The first social event of this school year was a party given oy the pep squad after our victory over the Stephenville Yellow Iackets. The Stephenville pep squad and team were invited to stay over. The auditorium was artistically decorated in Stephen- ville colors ot' blue and gold and our dear old Black and Gold. Alter evei'yone had become acquainted. numerous games were played. Members of the pep squad then served their guests with ice cream and cake. FOOTBALL BA KQV ET The most anticipated event of the year is always the ban- quet ggiven l'or the team by their mothers and the pep squad. This year's banquet seemed an unusual success. The guests as- sembled at 6:30 and went to the Domestic Art Laboratory. The tables were beautifully decorated with gold and black bows and streamers. Small brown paper Footballs served as place cards. At each plate was a clever menu printed on orange paper. The names ot' the food were football terms. The menu consisted oi' baked hen, dressing, sweet and Irish potatoes. cranberry sauce. and bread, followed by ice cream and cake. Toasts and speeches were made by the lettermen. the pep squad leaders, lilizabeth Anthony and Robert Cunningham, Mr. Burns and Mr. Kallina. T l if f , I Mr. Barrett was toast-master. After several peppy songs were sung, the team showed their gratitude by escorting' their pep squad partners to the picture show. , i -:II -fa - a. 7 - 7 -L 'Lf' Xa, ,, I .ah J, ,il - jc.: -my fl-'asia ,-f - , - o' s' if-' asL,:- 3-277, B - ,K-1-9 ' . They played games until they were just tired enough to enjoy to the full the excellent weenies, buns, pickles and cakes. After this they sat around a fire and toasted marshmallows and sang popular songs. All say that it was the End of a perfect day. SENIOR PICNIC It is customary for the Seniors to go on a picnic on their Senior Day. This year the Seniors went fishing on the Leon lliver at a place about 12 miles from Comanche. They hiked about, gathered wood for a fire and did numerous other things, finally eating a lunch of sandwiches, pickles, olives, potato chips, stuffed eggs, cakes, bananas, apples, oranges and sliced pineapple. After lunch they played games after which some of the members fished. liid any of those Seniors get barefooted and go in wading? Did they catch any fish? Were there any mosquitoes? You'll often wonder! CHAPEL PROGRAMS ln order that the chapel programs might be made more interesting this year, all the classes consented to, each in turn, give a program in chapel. The Seniors, being more responsive than the rest, offer- ed to give theirs first. They gave a pantomime playlet, en- titled l,over's Lane. The student body seemed to enjoy this very much, and at once the othei' classes began working to put over something equally good and interesting. The Juniors next favored us with a very unusual p1'o- gram. They performed a tedious operation on one of their fellow students. The Sophomores gave a very interesting musical and dancing program. The Freshmen gave a very original musical program on saws, French harps, etc. These programs were enjoyed by everyone. . ..Z-T , vzg, 'gr ' ofif' T' if c cf: w Q . This helped them greatly, and they came out with banners waving in the county meet. The school had a fine pep squad this year, not only in quan- tity but also in quality. Not only did the pep squad attend the football games in Comanche, but a large majority also went to the out of town games, which greatly helped the boys win many of their victories. When the pep leaders said, Frog ' the whole pep squad jumped and--well, you should have seen them-especially when they jumped around to the music of Pat's hand. The pep squad is certainly grateful to Mr. Howard for the music furnish- ed by the band at most of the games. Another unusual feature of our pep squad this year was the fact that there was quite a number of boys who were faith- ful to the pep squad until the end. They were a great help, and, next year, eve1'y boy that doesn't play on the team should join in and help yell for the Indians We hope that Vomanche High has a grand pep squad out next year to boost the football team. It start- ed to work at once, and in no time was ready to appear before the 1'est of the school with a ve1'y entertaining program. This was repeated several times during the year. As the days flew by, it kept gaining in quality and quantity, and soon was ready to appear before the whole town. At almost every public gath- ering during the rest of the year, the Orchestra was asked to playg and this they did with a great willingness. It seems almost an impossibility that such an orchestra could be developed from a bunch of beginners in music as this one did. Of course, most of the credit goes to the director, Mr. Howard. He was patient and sympathic and it certainly took these two characteristics to constantly drill and drill, and then drill some more, a bunch of numskulls. But soon these num- skulls began to see the 11 ht and almost before ou knew it 8' Y they became talented musicians We hope to see everyone that was in the oichestia back next year to help out --Z1 .ghl-F Ri.i.li:5rHIiH:L5,l53i:i . Yes sir, Diddye and John Robert were loved by the whole school, which accounts for the fact that the pep squad seemed to gee- haw better than ever before. Not only did they keep this excellent spirit up during the football season, but kept it up until the last day of school. Every Wednesday morning the student-body was allowed to assemble in the auditorium and yell for a few minutes. This surely helped the football team and certainly kept everybody full of pep, and wishing next year would hurry and come. It not only kept the students peppy, but made many of the boys who were dropping down in their work wake up and realize that if they intended to be a Comanche Indian next year, they would have to get to work-and this they did with untold efforts. We hope that this wonderful spirit does not die during the summer and that C. H. S. has a whooping good team and pep squad next year. 4, -.5 Jia,-fe- , . N . , X .a - 2'-Zfff Q-f C. .- S Q BG iiffp-'r,,. l l 3- ,,,,.,f Qt The Season The football season of '28 was a very successful one. The team started out for practice with a bang with over thirty men out for practice. There were some letter men out but the most were rookies. However under the leadership of Coach Burns the team began to take shape. BRECKENRIDGE-COMANCHE After about two weeks of practice we tangled up with Breckenridge High School on September 25. As this was a class A school we were not expecting to win over them. This however did not keep the Indians from fighting, we were defeated by the score of 25 to 0. This was really a fine showing as Brecken- ridge was a strong contender for the Class A title. DESDEMONA-COMANCHE The team was undaunted by this defeat and played the first conference game with Desdemona. This was a harder game than every one expected but by showing what it was made of, our Comanche team won by the decisive score of 18 to 0. Several of the new men showed up well in this game. Many others also learned a great deal more about football under Coach Burns. f f f li , Q' V '- -gfi 4 'L K4 W ,iff if of .ef-Hz' -1 ' t oa?'i5, Q ' ' J 'Z .. ,hi '5?f DUBLIN-COMANCHE Cheered on by the defeat of Desdemona we next played Dublin on her own field. This team was supposed to be the strongest in the district as they had defeated Brownwood 7 to 0. They were sure of a victory over Comanche and very much surprised when we beat them to the tune of 9 to 7. Several new men showed up wonderfully in this game. GORMAN-COMANCHE After winning over a strong team like Dublin we journeyed ap to Gorman to bring home the bacon. We outclassed them the entire game but in the last fifteen seconds of play, they com- pleted a freak pass which left the man with the ball completely alone and he made a touchdown by merely running. By losing this game we lost an excellent chance to win the District Champ- ionship. STEPHENVILLE-COMANCHE The next game was played at home and played with Stephen ville. This game was a fight from the first whistle to the last. Early in the game, a Stephenville man fumbled the ball and it was covered by a Comanche man over Stephenvilles goal line. We kicked a goal for the extra point. Not far from the end of the game, a Stephenville end scooped up a fumble and ran across the goal line. Heretotore, the letter men were eligible to play in this game, but this year, only those who Failed to letter were allowed to play. The Seniors and Sophomores were lined up against the Jiiniors and Freshmen. Both teams were very evenly matched and could not advance the ball very tar into the others territory. 'i he Juniors and Freshmen finally won the game by advancing' the ball past the Seniors and Sophomores' twenty yard line. The seniors passed their opponent's twenty yard line only once, while their own twentv yard line was passed twice. Many players who never had a chance to show their abilities in a game with an- other school, proved their ability to play in this grame. Some men who had never come out before, played in this game and showed up exceptionally well in this game. These may make wonderful players next year. SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE For the first time in the history ot' C. H. S. football, spring' footli-all practice was had. Several promising players who attend- ed Grammar School this year and who enter Higrh School next year, came over and practiced with the men who will come out next year. With this aid to acquaint the new men with the fun- damentals oi' football, an excellent team should be organized next year. Practice was sta1'ted about tour weeks before school was out and lasted about three weeks. Although this was a new idea, it met with success and it will probably become a custom at Comanche High School. 4 up . -55 S, f K - W ,,- -1-:e-.vF ffgf-'3'-if yf ,ef Z-' 1 ' -fr' ,av R -7' ' ea'S'2's gag' -V? 7 2 .. f9f!1f'1' Q,S710l'f5 ff ITN ll .L C OldthNV21ltC ITICL. Our girls did not get ve1'y far in the County Tournament however, because they played some very experienced teams.
