WALTER BRADFORD CUNNINGHAM Walter Bradford Cunmngham was born ln Lebanon De Kalb county Alabama Jan 8 1853 Hls fath er John Cunmngham was a natlve Amerlcan and a ploneer of North Alabama John Cunmngham was the first county clerk of DeKalb county whlch oflice he held for fourteen years The subJect of thls sketch ar rlved ln Collm Co Texas January 1 1875 He remamed in Colhn county about mne months and then moved to Comanche where he arrlved October 12 1875 The first year he farmed and then for three years frelght ed from Waco Dallas and Ft Worth to Comanche In 1880 he bought a drug and grocery busmess ln Coman che and contmued to run lt for ten years In 1890 he helped to organize the Comanche Natlonal Bank and was elected its first cashler whlch posltlon he has held contmuously ever slnce In busmess he considers hls greatest achlevements along the lme of bankmg On the death of Mr R V Neely ln 1906 Mr Cunmngham was prevalled upon to accept the posltlon of Treasurer and Manager of the Credlt Department of the Neely Harris Cunmngham Co whlch posltlon he now holds Mr Cunmngham s actlvlty as a busmess man has not prevented hlm from taklng an actlve mterest ln all llnes of publlc Improvement In 1890 he was a member of the Commlttee appointed to secure the Fl'lSCO rallroad to run through Comanche he gave conslderable tlme to the enterprise and was one of the largest con trlbuters to the fund of S40 000 ralsed by thls commlttee as a bonus to secure the road He served for several years on the Clty Councll of Comanche for whlch SCTVICB he never received a cent of remuneratlon ln fact he never has recelved a cent ln any way from the clty or county He also served for sometlme as treasurer of the Comanche School Board and 1n 1902 was elected by the people as a member of the Board and at 1ts organlzatxon was elected presldent Thls posltlon he has held ever slnce Recently he served as Chalrman of the Bulldmg Commlttee whlch erected the handsome new Hlgh School Bulldlng for the Comanche Publlc Schools In 1872 he unlted with the Cumberland Presbyterlan church ln Alabama and later was a charter mem ber of the Cumberland Church of Comanche He was a deacon ID thus church and always performed the du tles incumbent upon hlm as such falthfully For a great part of the time he was Supt of the Sunday School In July 1906 when the Comanche Cumberland Church dlsbanded along wlth the other members of the con gregatlon he Jolned the Presbyterlan Church He served as chalrman of the Bulldmg Commlttee of the new Presbyterlan Church recently erected For the last two years he has served as Treasurer of the Home MISSION Commlttee of Brownwood Presbytery He IS also a member of the Royal Arch Masons and has been for 20 years Mr. Cunmngham was the youngest of exght chlldren and IS the only survlvor of the number He has burled 5 of hls own children and has two stlll ahve He IS of an affectlonate dlsposltlon toward his famlly and feels very deeply any loss that comes to hlm In busmess and soclal hfe he has deiinlte convlctlons and mor al courage enough to stand for them ' 9 1 9 ' 9 - ' 1 1 - 9 ' ' '1 1. r ' 1 v ' ' , . .
