I I Superintendent of Public Schools, C he C t VV B CUNNINGHAM PRESIDENT OF THE SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO n n THIS VOLUME OF THE ARROWVHEAD IS RESPECTFULLV DEDICATED W BROD H008 W B CUNN NJGHAM WALTER BRADFORD CUNNINGHAM Walter Bradford Cunmngham was born ln Lebanon De Kalb county Alabama Jan 8 1853 Hls fath er John Cunmngham was a natlve Amerlcan and a ploneer of North Alabama John Cunmngham was the first county clerk of DeKalb county whlch oflice he held for fourteen years The subJect of thls sketch ar rlved ln Collm Co Texas January 1 1875 He remamed in Colhn county about mne months and then moved to Comanche where he arrlved October 12 1875 The first year he farmed and then for three years frelght ed from Waco Dallas and Ft Worth to Comanche In 1880 he bought a drug and grocery busmess ln Coman che and contmued to run lt for ten years In 1890 he helped to organize the Comanche Natlonal Bank and was elected its first cashler whlch posltlon he has held contmuously ever slnce In busmess he considers hls greatest achlevements along the lme of bankmg On the death of Mr R V Neely ln 1906 Mr Cunmngham was prevalled upon to accept the posltlon of Treasurer and Manager of the Credlt Department of the Neely Harris Cunmngham Co whlch posltlon he now holds Mr Cunmngham s actlvlty as a busmess man has not prevented hlm from taklng an actlve mterest ln all llnes of publlc Improvement In 1890 he was a member of the Commlttee appointed to secure the Fl'lSCO rallroad to run through Comanche he gave conslderable tlme to the enterprise and was one of the largest con trlbuters to the fund of S40 000 ralsed by thls commlttee as a bonus to secure the road He served for several years on the Clty Councll of Comanche for whlch SCTVICB he never received a cent of remuneratlon ln fact he never has recelved a cent ln any way from the clty or county He also served for sometlme as treasurer of the Comanche School Board and 1n 1902 was elected by the people as a member of the Board and at 1ts organlzatxon was elected presldent Thls posltlon he has held ever slnce Recently he served as Chalrman of the Bulldmg Commlttee whlch erected the handsome new Hlgh School Bulldlng for the Comanche Publlc Schools In 1872 he unlted with the Cumberland Presbyterlan church ln Alabama and later was a charter mem ber of the Cumberland Church of Comanche He was a deacon ID thus church and always performed the du tles incumbent upon hlm as such falthfully For a great part of the time he was Supt of the Sunday School In July 1906 when the Comanche Cumberland Church dlsbanded along wlth the other members of the con gregatlon he Jolned the Presbyterlan Church He served as chalrman of the Bulldmg Commlttee of the new Presbyterlan Church recently erected For the last two years he has served as Treasurer of the Home MISSION Commlttee of Brownwood Presbytery He IS also a member of the Royal Arch Masons and has been for 20 years Mr. Cunmngham was the youngest of exght chlldren and IS the only survlvor of the number He has burled 5 of hls own children and has two stlll ahve He IS of an affectlonate dlsposltlon toward his famlly and feels very deeply any loss that comes to hlm In busmess and soclal hfe he has deiinlte convlctlons and mor al courage enough to stand for them ' 9 1 9 ' 9 - ' 1 1 - 9 ' ' '1 1. r ' 1 v ' ' , . . A x ALMA THE COMANCHE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING ROBINSON An attractlve edlfice ln the eastern part of Comanche IQ the Hlgh School Bulldlng It IS sltuated on east second street ln a pleasant locallty In front of the bulldlng are three walks leadlng to a large gallery on whlch are four columns supportlng another gallery from WhlCh the flag staff proudly waves Old Glory Enterlng the bulldlng by large double doors vou are ad mltted lnto a long hall measurlng elghty bv elghteen feet at the rear end of vshlch IS the St31I'XV3X Openlng from tendent s office and to the laboratory The school rooms are occupled by the seventh elghth nlnth tenth and eleventh grades Each room IS furnlshed Wlth black boards 4 1 2 feet Wlde The rooms have large wlndows and transoms over the doors whlch afford com plete ventllatlon The rooms are oak flnlshed have steel celllngs and the walls are palnted IU buff CdlClmlHQ The laboratorv whlch IS used by classes ln physlcs and phvslology IS furnlshed Wlth machlnes for the classes ln physlcs and phvslologlc apparatus so the students have the use of th artlcles needed for experlmentlng Golng up the stalr way at the back of the hall you come to a very large assembly hall measurlng 56x52 feet It s used for chapel QXQTCISQS and the school socletles Thls room 19 furnlshed wlth good llghts and beautlful opera chalrs Adlolnlng the assembly hall IS the school llbrary con slstlng of two large cases of books used bv the students Near the assembly hall IS another room used by the athletlc club electrlc llghts water works steam heatlng and a sevu erage sx stem The students are proud of thls beautlful bulldlng and It IS consldered by them one of the best ID the state We are proud to be the flrst puplls that have occupled thlQ bulldlng and hope to graduate ln lt We appreclate lt and show our appreclatlon by keeplng It clean Our bulldlng though It does not compare wlth the large colleges IS appreclated by the puplls and speaks very fa vorably for the llttle cltw of Comanche I By I A v 1 . C., lin jllllemnrlam JOHN JEFFERSON CUNNINGHAM Thursdiv Febiuarv 20 1908 a brief b autlful life was ended on earth and a happy eternity begun in he iven Just it noon the Elder Shepherd came seeking his own and bore to the peaceful fold above the bright spirit of John Iefferson youngest son of Mr and Mr W B Cunningham John his father s pride his mother s Joy the light the life of the home The above prepared by the hand of an intimate friend of the family at the time of John s death expresses most pcrfectlv the sentiment of every one who knew him At his death John was a little moie than fifteen vears of age having been born December 14th 1892 Few bovs have passed the end of their fifteenth v ear with as much that is desuable and as little that is to be found Just where he was expected to be and doing iust what he was expected to be doing He was al ways prompt at school and prepared with his work His influence too among his fellow students was ever on the side of good order and obedience to authoritv On Sundav morning he was alwav s to be found in his place in Sundav School being among the first to arrive At other times he w as around the home doing the chores and performing to the fullest extent all the duties of a loving son and brother Indeed we should have to look far to find a more perfect example of a bright well disposed well behaved ind altogether lov able character than was his The high esteem in which he was held bv school mates teachers and friends was ev idcnced bv the deep interest that everyone took in his illness and bv the manv beautiful floral offerings given and by the immense concourse of people present at the time of his hurl il Mav we have in Comanche manv more characters as beautiful as his H 7 ...T K- 21, - Ny ' . , ' V 84 ' ' A v 1 ' ' ,Z v s 1 Z 5 L. 7' 'l- v V . v ' . , . .
