SH Leon Thomas Dicky Thompson Patsy Wall Alfa Ann Williams Jo Ann Williams John Williams Ronnie Williams Alvin Williams Thomas Wilson Scniars 194 7-I9 9 Senia 611155 J-li tory Do you remember the old witch in the first grade play? This was none other than Claudine Byford. Then there was Bobby Kinder, the greatest tap dancer in the first grade. The Romeo was Joe Don Kin- der, who had all the girls on the string. Little Sue Cunningham was voted least likely to succeed by the class. Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Tid- well were glad when the year was over. The second grade was highlighted by numerous battles between Miss Wilson and Gene Ferguson who persisted in making faces at his teacher. A fighter was born when a sixth grade bully iumped Eddie Rathbun. Results were several scratches and numerous teeth marks. So Eddie lost? Nol Nol He won by a long shot. Joe Don lost out this year as the lover when Aaron Butler took over. Miss Wilson and Mrs. Bandy were also glad to see us go. ln the third grade, Glen Berry took over as the great lover. Even though Glen was the lover, Elsie Kay Taylor was always playing cowboy and Indians with Jim Henry. This year B. Johnston became the marble champion by winning 27 games out of 27. This was the year Dicky Thompson stayed in every day at recess so he wouldn't have to play that mean old game, football. By popular demand, we all decided to be fourth graders. Maxine Stephenson started the year off with a bang by getting a spanking the first day for kissing the new lover, Jerry Don Smith. This was the year Burl Shelby accidentally went into the wrong classroom and it was three months before he was missed by Mrs. Gammill. By this time, Mrs. Mobley iust re- fused to give him up. Jo Ann Williams must have had the idea that she had to come to school every day, because she even came on Saturday. Remember Jimmy Shaw chasing Saundra Dunn. Every time he got near her he would fall down right on his nose. Leon Thomas vision- ed his future as a Rock Island engineer, Believe it or not, but Sudie Rather was actually scared to death the first day of the fifth grade when she saw Mr. Shear, her new teacher. Billy McFatridge was always playing Cat and Rat instead of getting his lessons in Mrs. Bandy's room. Remember Larry Kinder? I bet Jerry Kinder does, because in the fifth grade, Jerry would have to put his books up and take Larry home, since they lived across the street from school. Larry wanted to come to school more than Jerry did. In the sixth grade, we had a very talented little girl, who taught Barbara Dunn and Patsy Wall to speak Chinese. Remember this, girls? Kenneth Powers was always trying to run away from Helen Scott, who liked all the little boys. A little bird told us that Shelia and Clarece Blankenship used to fight all the time because they wanted each other's boyfriends. Sam McBride was a regular little song bird in the seventh grade, singing I Love You Truly to Pat Barnett, who sang back, l Don't Care. Doris Richardson and Patsy Martin used to see who could iump the rope the most times without missing a skip. The Big Year was here. We were all going to graduate from the eighth grade. Alta Ann Williams and Barbara Hughes nearly wore their graduation caps and gowns out the first day we had them. Ronnie Williams and Leslie Rice were always seeing whose bicyCIe would go the fastest, even up the steps to Mrs. Sears' room. Glynda Phillips moved to Comanche her freshman year. She was so shy and quiet until someone got a dollar out of her purse. If you have good ears you can still hear her yapping about it. Joan Lambert was always playing softball instead of being in study hall. Jeanie Bryant was always a heavy hitter on the softball team. Jeanie had a lot of fun in science class, too. Ronnie Churchman and Billy Driggers were always to be Mr. Dyer's pets, but they ended up as his pet peeves. Patsy King and Sandy Robeson had an exciting day when Mr. Appleman sent them to study hall. Especially when Mr. Holleyman introduced them to the class. Donnie Leach was always right in the middle of everything. He wanted to be remembered. I remember when Mrs. Gilger asked him to bend over the middle of her desk. You can guess why. Bobby Bowles used to be as lively as a wire, running away from Lucinda Head's boyfriend. Bobby iust didn't have a chance with Lucy. Wil- liam Hensley, remember when we all used to call you Red? Benny Downey used to have a horse. That is when Elsie liked him. But when he got rid of the horse, something happened to Elsie. Can you feature Marquetta Cope with short hair? She had a ducks tail last year. Virgil Foster has no time for girls and laughter. He has enough trouble keeping his little scooter on the go. Jimmy Frederick was always trying to beat Lennis Lawson in the checker game. Albert McGregor always left his car door open when he went to his best girl's house. Why did he do this? So he could get a head start to the car and get away before her mother got him. Buddy Combs was a very popular lad his senior year with Mrs. Reid, who thought so much of him that she would let him go visiting during her class, to the office. Joe Chisum was always hot-rodding his Buick until it went ca-plooey. Roger McAlister was quite a lover and hot-rodder. Irvin Miller was always as noiseless as a mouse, everyone wanted him to play ball but he was too scared to play-along with Don Satterfield. Don wanted to play but he was scared of what Ervin would do to him if he did play. Earline Smith loved to rock and roll, even when they were playing a waltz tune. Rita Smith was always leading the class in yells even though it was in typing class. Johnny Williams and Alvin Williamson were always giving Mr. Cheatham trouble in agriculture. Thomas Wilson was always running to Duncan, at first we thought he might have a girl friend up there-and sure enough, he did. Sponsors Gilger and Carmack finally pulled us through graduation time. They Can Who Think They Can, that's our motto. it Alta Faye Smith Butch Burchel I .,,.....,.f- ,ff-4 'll Clwfzznrlfz Board of Edufatian Paul Thompson, Presudenf, Isom McDcmel, Vxce Presrdenf, Herb Percuvol, Clerk, Lester Owen, Member' Jokie Kelmcn, Member I 4 ', ,aff XA 1 5 Sllperinfendent of Schools Charles Holleymcm Herb Percival and Jakie Kalman, Board of Education izzx 'k..,,J Irene Bones, English, Spanish, Gary Holt, Bond, Drivers Education Lo X'-firl Reid, Commerce. Wm Sw - , X .M C715 National Chvspiah Society How can you change a large number of inexperienced high school students into actresses, actors, and adept public speakers? Mr. Kenneth Sharp, our sponsor, faces this challenging task. Few of us enterspeech with the idea of making it a profession. We have seen the importance of being able to express ourselves in this complex world and found ourselves unqualified. Our speech program is improving each year with more students realizing the need for speech training. Students who work hard to prepare themselves go to contest each year. The National Thespian Society sponsors an annual All-School Play to. raise funds for the speech trips. The All School Play serves another purpose also. Any student in high school iseligibleto try out. This play offers the first speech training for some students. Our All School Play this year was No Boys Allowed. We were all very proud of this production. Plays are a good opportunity for pledges to make Thespian membership. Becoming a Thespian is not an easy job. One must spend at least one hundred hours on speech work to qualify for membership. We have 34 students active in our Thespian Club, but only TO are Thespians. A number of pledges will receive membership at the end of the year. Three trophies can be won in the Southern Five Conference Meet, as follows: Indi- vidual Sweepstakes, Debate, and One Act Play. Our speech department won the Sweepstakes Trophy at the Conference Meet for the second consecutive year. Donnie Leach and Mark Hanna only placed in each event they entered. Donnie won lst in interpretation of humorous literature, 2nd in radio speaking, and 3rd in extemp. Mark took lst place in extemp and discussion. Claudine Byford placed 2nd in original oratory. One of our debate teams won the debate trophy. Thisfortunate team was composed of Mark Hanna and Suzanne Cunningham. Another team composed of Sherry Apple and Barbara Cox competed very commendably. Our contest play Undertow by Ann Weatherly placed 2nd in the conference. We shouldn't feel badly about winning two out of three trophies. We also made a good showing at O.B.U. Two of our group placed in the finals in individual entries competing against 18 schools and the debate team was one of the top eight teams out of the 33 teams entered. The winner ofa lst place in a contest is qualified for state. Four of our group will be competing against the best high school speakers in Oklahoma at the state contest at O.U. Mark Hanna and Suzanne Cunningham will compete in debate. Mark will also be in discussion and extemp. Claudine Byford is qualified in discussion. Donnie will be going in interpretation of humorous literature. 80 In this picture he is giving his humorous cutting from the play Green Pastures at an assembly . vi i 5 5 f 2 3 i 3 3 I 1 Z , ,aw I J 1 ..., A wb' fl! - W, 'V 5 I x . Baud The Band begins in the fifth grade. They learn basic things, learn howto clean the instruments, how to hold their instruments, and how to play as an individual and as a group. Basic band teaches music appreciation and appreciation of the instrument. The sixth grade is the middle step to the high school band. They learn notes and spaces, and more technical differ- ences in music. They start developing their skills and abilities. They learn more about each other and the abilities of each other. They learn howto march and how to be a unit on a marching field. They learn to play harmony. The High School Band starts with the seventh grade and ends with high school graduation. They learn the difference in classical, such os Beethoven, Bach, Handel, etc., marches, such as, Sousa, Fillmore, etc., popular and semi-clas- sical, blues and a little rock and roll, iass, modern or contemporary music, show band type of music and also folk music. The director tries to give a well rounded musical education. The Band has performed at all ten football games during halftime. lt has also performed in nine pep rallies, ten pep assemblies, two P.T.A. meetings, and the Christmas Concert and Assembly. Some of the outstanding band members have participated at O.S.U. at Stillwater, and the District Honor Band at S.W.O.C. at Weatherford. The director hopes to have a winter and spring concert and one or two music festivals. All and all the Band has performed for the community and state about 40 times. They carry a large roll in community spirit. They represent the school and city of Comanche everywhere they play. The band is not a professional band. lt is made up completely of amateurs. Actually it is o class, proving citizenship, learning how to be an individual and also learning how to be a part of an organization. Band activities do not stop here. They go on to an organization called the Band Boosters Club. Through hard work in different activities they raise agreat deal of the money it takes to support the band. The Band Boosters Club is made up of the band parents and other people who are interested in the band. They are responsible for the purchase of the band uniforms, which cost approximately S50 each. They help to pay for different music and instruments, instrument repair, and maintenance. lf itwasn't forthe Band Boosters Club andthe part they play, the band would not be able to function. The band had 29 on the field at the beginning of the year and next year they hope to have 50. The Comanche Schools' Band Director for the year T958-1959 is Mr. Gary Holt. Yet there has been a few who did KU not take advantage of the complete educational opportunities .L,o-ff' offered and encouraged by your school. Wh-sw' l know that the real tests are soon coming. Such life tests and social adiustments that confront manhood and womanhood as they face life more independently, making proper goals and working toward them, being an active and contributing citizen to your community, state and nation. And a big test, that of the individual being fully cognizant of his complete duty toward God, family, and all peoples. My desired proiection is that some of you graduates as Patri- cia, Jeanie, and Claudine will continue in their formal education. Aaron and Joe Don will continue their creativeness and harness their much energies toward fully developing their many talents. Clarece and Sheila will continue to exhibit to all their fine pat- tern of behavior and sincerity. Alvin, Bobby Bowles, John, and Eddie, as well as Roger, Billy Driggers, Gene and Ronnie will help all those they come in con- tact with to more fully appreciate the land and the tremendous importance of agriculture to the American way of life. This will be done by continued education and for some the actual tilling of the soil. Suzanne, Saundra Robeson, and Lucinda, that the love of music will continue to play an im- portant part in your lives and in those about you and that next year you will be in an insti tution of higher learning continuing your educational processes. Barbara Dunn, Saundra Dunn, Patsy, and Glenda, as well as Maxine and Elsa Kay will con- tinue to develop a pattern of life that will be as happy a situation as their secondary school years. College training for you would be yours if you desire it. Gainful employment to Buddy, Glen Dale, Joe, and Bennie, as well as William, Sammy, and Albert in the years just ahead. Whether they pursue a trade school or enter into a iob, that they have learned that real iobs and real opportunities are made by real employees. To Billy McFatridge, Charles Burchell, and Irvin, may you young men assume to the fullest degree the many responsibilities of a man to his family. Dickie Thompson, Tom Wilson, Bobby Kinder, and Deral Knight should continue and plan to develop their minds and bodies for the vast technological era that we are in and our country so well needs. - One can continue to list graduate by graduate and find be developed by these young people than space or time All of the Burls', Jerrys' Dorises, Virgils', and Dons' will of continued education and the many phases of employment as well as making fine homes. All of this, such as their course might be, l feel sure will be a great credit to their family, community, and to their school. many more types of talent that will would permit. find themselves moving in directions The board of education and our fine faculty joins me in saying whatever path you choose, work at it faithfully, set your values high and take time out to help other people, for in doing so you will then have reached the full stature of the type individual your school has tried so hard to produce. u Respectfully yours, Charles D.
