State, Alva M.A., Colorado University To Mrs. Ruth Gilger, member of the Comanche chapter ofthe National High School Honor Society and to the members of the Tomahawk Staff, congratulations on a job well done. To everybody into whose hands this volume of the 1956 Tomahawk falls---igreetings. Student morale means much to the future welfare of any school. Contributions to the healthy morale of the Comanche school by students and friends everywhere are greatly appreciated. Your school is no greater and no better than you think it is. Your interest and your attitude is a tangible asset. You represent your school in the community in which you live or visit. Don't allowa graduate, a former student, or a student of any other school to be any more enthusiastic in his support of his school than you are in your support of yours. The dominant idea of the Comanche school is service through education. lts entire resources are dedicated to that purpose . May success and happiness be yours always. Sincerely, M. L. Korn CHARLES D. HOLLEYMAN Hugh School Principal B S East Central State M Ed University of Oklahoma The making of your yearbook is a mixture of young people learning, working, and par- ticipating in wholesome diversions together for this current school year. These captured events shall take on more meaning to each of you as you continue your education or daily experiences, for then you will realize even more of the help, encourage- ment, and opportunity which your school offers. The National Honor Society and their sponsor, Mrs. Ruth Gilger, completed this year- book for their yearly project. This is a splendid piece of work and our appreciation goes to each one . Remember, all ye INDIANS, that how far in life you go is like the lndian's arrow, it depends on how hard you PU LL--on the bow. Respectfully yours, Charles D . Our first presentation of the year was a one-act play, Ladies of the Mop, which was presented to the high school in our ,gf regular Speech Assembly. The members of ,W 5 il the cast, Patsy Wampler, Patsy Huey, Marie P White, and Joyce Bess, truly enioyed prepar- ing this delightful comedy. In November, the entire Speech Department presented a program of one-act plays, Stolen ldentity and The Rough House, in a pay assembly as a money-raising proiect. The Special Speech class presented Stolen Identity, a comedy-drama. Its cast included: Don Ely, Carol Owen, Donnie Leach, Patsy Huey, Marie White, Joyce Bess, and Patsy Wampler. Patsy Zwingle, Ruth Ann Moore, David Camp, Glenden Adams, Jess Blackwell, Shirley Riggle, Karen Ferguson, Joe Ferguson, Jimmy Gordon, and Barbara Welch, all members of Mrs. Appleman's third hour Speech I class, were included in the cast of The Rough House, a rollicking comedy which delighted the audience. With these plays behind us, we began to look forward to and work for the coming speech contests. February 8, l956, we at- tended the Southern Seven Speech Conference at OCW in Chickasha. At th raneous Speaking, Glenden Adams placed third in Analysis of Public Address, Patsy Huey won a third in Girls Radio Speaking, and Carol Owen placed fourth in Dramatic Literature. Joyce Bess, Barbara Welch, Patsy Zwingle, Patsy Wampler, Marie White, Harold Speed, Lyndel Williams, Jimmy Gordon, Kay Ferguson, Ronnie Farrar, Carol Owen, Patsy Huey, Joe Ferguson, Bob Lantrip, and Ernest Kitsmiller were also entered in various other events. is contest Joe Ferguson won a first place in Extempo- February 20, 1956, Patsy Zwingle, Carol Owen, Joyce Bess, Glenden Adams, Ernest Kitsmiller, Don Ely, and Patsy Wampler took our one-act play, Riders to the Sea, by J. W. Synge, to the Southern Seven One-Act Play Contest at Walters. Since we didn't qualify for State at this contest, we began making plans to take our play to the East Central Drama Festival at Ada. February 24-25, we went to our final individual events contest at the Central State Contest at Edmond. This turned out to be our most successful contest of the year. Patsy Zwingle took first place in Original Oratory and Marie White came in with q close geqqnd in the same event. Carol Owen won second place in Dramatic Literature, while Patsy Huey placed second in Girls Radio and third in Standard O,-qtory. In the field of Discussion, Joe Ferguson and Barbara Welch both brought home excellent ratings. Joyce Bess, Glenden Adams, Patsy Wampler, Harold Speed, Ronnie Farrar, Bob Lantrip and Gilbert Jarvis also attended the Edmond tournament. Of course our instructor, Mrs. R. E. Appleman, and several mothers went with us on each of these trips as chaperons and to give us that much needed last minute encouragement and instruction. As a result of these contests, Patsy Zwingle, Glenden Adams and Joe Ferguson are qualified to attend the State Contest at O. U. in April. ln connection with our other speech work, Comanche has reorganized our troupe of the National Thespian Society. This year we initiated six new members: Carol Owen, Patsy Huey, Don Ely, Joe Ferguson, Marie White, Pat Wampler and Joyce Bess. We hope to be even more active next year. ,ff Qrfx f---- x junior 4-ff 61116 Owccrs President Vice President Bill Wilkerson Morilyn Payne Mike Young . . Sharon Kelman Jeanie Folsom Q Mrs . Mayes . .
