They were Patty Cross, Anna Kiess, Shirley Rowley, Rita Staebler, Joan Valeske, LaVonne Steward, Melberne Elliott, Jim Zimmerman Dale Tjaden, Dale Chestek, Paul Darrow, Bill Linn, David Walsh and Gary Lester. During the year Beverly and Betty Lutz and Florine Bangert joined us. Our teacher was Miss Viola Baker. In the fall of 1942, Melberne Elliott and Betty and Beverly Lutz had fallen from our list of members. LaVonne Steward and David Walsh moved away during the year. Two members, Mary Jean Lunn and John Bonner, increased our number. Miss Baker was again our teacher. Miss Opal Heard welcomed fourteen third graders when school started in 1943. Melberne Elliott had rejoined us. We lost Dale Tjaden. June Noling and Clayton Wiltse joined the class during the fourth year. We were under the instruction of Miss Doris Wilson. Patty Cross and Jim Zimmerman failed to attend school with us during our fifth year. Kathleen Copper and Mary Riat Mooney were our teachers. Mrs. Donald Todd, our sixth grade teacher, found only eleven young folks ready for school. Myrna Timmons joined us in the spring, but Gary Lester and Clayton Wiltse moved away. Miss Mooney gave us our final report cards for that year. After an absence of two years, Jim Zimmerman rejoined us in 1947. However, Paul Darrow left our merry group. Miss Virginia Jaeger was the teacher. Nine eighth graders entered the room of Mrs. Grace Streitmatter in the fall of 1948. Keith Lackore had joined us. June Noling had not come back. Sixteen green but hard working freshmen entered the halls of C, H. S. in 1949. The new members of the class were Kenneth Cordes, Harold and Patty Golly, Roger Grimm, Marvin Solberg, Charles Starr, and Marilyn Waters. Mr. John Halstead was our sponsor. Though we lost Roger Grimm, Alice Wiltse and Richard Bierbaum were added to our number for our sophomore year. Mr. Halstead was again our sponsor. Joan Valeske failed to return with the Junior class of 1951. Alice Witlse moved at the beginning of the second semester. Mrs. Mae Essman was our sponsor. With exception of Kenneth Cordes, all of the juniors returned to finish their high school days together in C. H. S. They were Richard Bierbaum, Dale Chestek, Melberne Elliott, Harold and Patty Golly, Anna Kiess, Keith Lackore, Bill Linn, Shirley Rowley, Marvin Solberg, Rita Staebler, Charles Starr, Marilyn Waters, and Jim Zimmerman. K. E. Steele served as our advisor. 12. Prophecy Ten years have passed by and the class of '53 have settled far and wide. Each has gone his own way to get ahead in the world. The former Patty Golly, is now busy taking care of her, five sons and keep- ing house for her husband Henry and his brother Bernard. She is now working part time at the May Drug Store and is keeping in touch with her former school mates. Dale Chestek is now teaching engineering at Ames. He frequently brings his wifte and three daughters back to Colwell to visit his old friends. His old 39 Chev. is still faithfully fholding together. If you happen to go east of Colwell you will probably see the former Rita Staebler doing the field work while her husband Tim, is working on their old Plymouth and tending to their four children. The former Shirley Rowley has managed to work herself west-ward where she and Russell have worked very hard to build a small, but substantial ' shack by the ocean. Her three daughters are now twirling in a near by theater. Harold Golly is competing against Charles in the junk business. This busi- ness has become very prosperous and he now plans to buy out Oscar Besuk and settle in Colwell with his wife and son. .Tim Zimmerman has been living in Arkansas where he has acquired the true Arkansas spirit and therefore has been too tired to seek a wife. He has been thinking of returning to Deerfield and organizing a Lonely Hearts Club. Melberne Elliott and his wife Mary Jean, have purchased a large dude ranch in Texas where they have a large number of Stallions. Since they are doing quite well they have extended invitations to all of their poor classmates to spend a week with them free of charge. Anna Kiess has been located teaching in Africa so she can be near her fiance Bernard, who is stationed near there. They plan to be married as soon as he is promoted, and with both salaries, they hope to struggle along. In Colwell we find Keith Lackore has established a large taxi business. His wife takes care of all the calls during the week ends while Keith is in his bar- ber shop giving his specialty The Lackore Butch. Bill Linn is now an admiral in the navy and can be seen driving his new but banged up Cadillac convertible. There has been a rumor that he has a, girl in every port! Richard Bierbaum is now Secretary of the Treasury of the U. S. A. and his wife is working as a waitress in a cafeteria near the White House to help support him and their two daughters. Charles Starr is a used car dealer and junk dealer near Chicago. His wife is kept busy caring for their nine children and three dogs. In a report from Alaska we hear that Marvin Solberg has been patiently wait- ing for a silver fox to walk in to his traps although business is not too good, he still finds time to court some unidentified Alaskan girl. During the housing shortage Marilyn Waters has converted the old Deerfield Hall into a home for her husband Dick Losee and her triplets. She has given up teaching English at the Colwell school. 13 Clas s Will We, the class of 1953 of Colwell High School, of the County of Floyd, and the State of Iowa, being of sound minds and bodies after fouristrenous years, do herby make, publish, and declare this as our final and best will and test- amentsg herby revoking all former wills, bequests, and devices of whatever nature or form here to fore by us. as I, Richard Bierbaum will my front seat to Willard Grimm so he can throw all candy and gum wrappers behing the radiator.
