9 Ehuratinnal Zlnflurnrr nf Glnluillr ifigh Svrhnnl By Tom I. Oakshott Education is not an end, it is a means. It is not a product, it is a process. The purpose of the American public school system is to teach the nobility of labor, reverence for truth, and the beauty of human service. The Colville High School will soon make its 25th annual contribution to the Nation. Commencing with the class of 1906, this institution has given a high school education to almost 700 young men and women. The time is far too short to definitely know just what heights they may climb, or what marks Will be left for the World to remember, but keeping in mind that the purpose of such a school is to build up and develop a clean, high-minded, useful type of citizen- ship, it has no apology to offer. - The graduates of this school are on the faculties of great institutions of learning, surgeons and chemists in the hospitals and laboratories, conducting financial and mercantile enterprises, at the helm of state, county and city gov- ernments, back of humming motors in large factoriesg out in the open operat- ing farms and helping to feed the world-all contributing their part to the good of the Nation. The bill of this community for their education has been paid in full. It is also a matter of sacred remembrance to recall that in 1917, when the fate of this Nation was hanging in the balance, 155 of its manhood, which was one-half of its living alumni, responded to the call to arms in defense of this Republic and its institutions in which they had been instructed. Some of them did not come back, but paid a supreme sacrifice. They gave their lives for their country, Hunquestioning, uncomplaining, with faith in their hearts and hope on their lips that America should triumph and its civilization survive. ,Whatever bill this district had against them for an education was paid with heavy interest. The beauty and inspiration of life lies in tradition. You have a heritage to maintain. You can best follow the tradition of this school by finding that which will enable you to render your best service to mankind and train your ability to further that service. Through its graduates our school, like all others, has been weighed in the balance. It has not been found wanting, but has well contributed its part to the improvement of human society. Let it continue to exist, showing forth to the young men and women of this community the way, the truth, and the light.
