Oakshott Education is not an end, it is a means. It is not a product, it is a process. The purpose of the American public school system is to teach the nobility of labor, reverence for truth, and the beauty of human service. The Colville High School will soon make its 25th annual contribution to the Nation. Commencing with the class of 1906, this institution has given a high school education to almost 700 young men and women. The time is far too short to definitely know just what heights they may climb, or what marks Will be left for the World to remember, but keeping in mind that the purpose of such a school is to build up and develop a clean, high-minded, useful type of citizen- ship, it has no apology to offer. - The graduates of this school are on the faculties of great institutions of learning, surgeons and chemists in the hospitals and laboratories, conducting financial and mercantile enterprises, at the helm of state, county and city gov- ernments, back of humming motors in large factoriesg out in the open operat- ing farms and helping to feed the world-all contributing their part to the good of the Nation. The bill of this community for their education has been paid in full. It is also a matter of sacred remembrance to recall that in 1917, when the fate of this Nation was hanging in the balance, 155 of its manhood, which was one-half of its living alumni, responded to the call to arms in defense of this Republic and its institutions in which they had been instructed. Some of them did not come back, but paid a supreme sacrifice. They gave their lives for their country, Hunquestioning, uncomplaining, with faith in their hearts and hope on their lips that America should triumph and its civilization survive. ,Whatever bill this district had against them for an education was paid with heavy interest. The beauty and inspiration of life lies in tradition. You have a heritage to maintain. You can best follow the tradition of this school by finding that which will enable you to render your best service to mankind and train your ability to further that service. Through its graduates our school, like all others, has been weighed in the balance. It has not been found wanting, but has well contributed its part to the improvement of human society. Let it continue to exist, showing forth to the young men and women of this community the way, the truth, and the light. I0 Svknnkum ,Staff ' 1 l Patrick VVilliams Mosher G. We wish to take this opportunity to thank all those who have helped us to make The 1931 Skookum a success. The Staff is deeply indebted to Mr. Ri. C. Patrick, who, as faculty adviser, has contributed loyally to the welfare of The Sk0okum since its beginning. Great assistance in a financial way has been given by those giving adver- tisements, and to them we extend our sincere thanks. We also greatly appre- ciate the help given by Clinton Hydorn in the preparation of this volume. And now, to those who are leaving the school this year, we wish every success in life-to those who are to return, a happy vacation and greater ,years to come. LUCY MOSHER, Editor. The gay, laughing Freshmen entered upon their last year in Junior High School with high spirits for the future. The Chief, Edwin Henderson, and the young Brave, Kenneth Stone, led them through many perils to safety. Members of the class showed their ability in the handling of the Student Association, and others showed their merit in football and basketball. Indian Brave, Kenneth, yet again steered the class over rocky roads, with the assistance of the great Chief Red, During this second period new talent for dramatics was disclosed and portrayed in the productions of the Junior High School. Thus ended the first lapse of the journey of the Class of '31. Act II. Time, Year 1928-29. Cast, Class of '31. Following their high sway of the year before, the class was a little let down by the turn of events when entering upon the first year of Senior High School. Nevertheless, led again by Kenney, they held their own with the upper classmen, although having lost several braves and maidens during the summer season. The Chief, who helped the coming Indians, was none other than Robert C. Patrick. For the last part of their pilgrimage of the second year, the class had as their leader the fair Indian maiden, Catherine Spedden. As in the foregoing year, the class distinuguished themselves by originality in everything in which they participated. Among the many things which they accomplished was the party given in honor of the Freshmen. Thus ended the second part of their Journey. Act III. Time, Year 1929-30. Cast, Class of '31. The Class of '31 entered upon the third lapse of its journey, having again wisely chosen Kenneth Stone to steer them through the great year. The class still carried on, even though losing several more braves and maidens. Athletes, actors, orators, and executive members, were brought to light in the progress- ing of the Class of '31. All of these things were accomplished with the aid of fair Miss Regina Cooper as class adviser. This marked an era in the progress of the class. Under the able coaching of Miss Regina Cooper, the class presented Skidding, one of the best plays ever staged in the High School. To add another distinct feature to the list of activi- ties, was the unique Japanese Junior Prom, which was given in honor of the high and mighty Seniors. Again the class felt proud to rest for three months before again showing their wisdom in school affairs. Act IV. Time, Year 1930-31. Cast, Class of '31. The final step in the journey having been reached, the mighty Seniors felt that they had played their part well. As their just and fit leader for the last period spent in Senior High, the class chose the fair maiden, Lucy Jane Mosher, to bear the responsibilities. A very able Chief was Miss Regina Cooper to help carry out the activities of the group. Six of our fair maidens displayed their ability for playing basketball by making the regular squad, and the braves kept pace with them, with eight members participating in football and basketball. Led again by Lucy Jane and Miss Regina Cooper, the Senior Class left 25 memories to the remainder of the school by claiming the winning orator, through forming many lasting friendships, with the production of the Senior Play, and by leaving a memorial to the school. The class feels that they have progressed well and far in their journey through High School. With this thought in mind they bid the dear old school and friends farewell. Qllaaa ill We, the Class of '31, who've fought our battle long, and won, Leave to all the Juniors here the qualities we hold most dear. That they may all their tasks fulfill, We hereby publish our last will. We bequeath, first of all, to the dear old school, Our humor, good judgment, and will to rule. To the seniors of next year, our loved class adviser, Miss Cooper, who faithfully guides and makes wiser. To the ones of the future we now make so bold As to leave our R. Patrick and tickets unsold. To Miss Hazel Flower, our sweet, winning ways, To help capture Walt Wildey the rest of his days. Our greetings to Mitchell and Jenkins, so dignified In the Faculty Vodvil. We laughed 'til we nearly died. To students of science, one moment we lend, So that lateness will not Mr. Herbage offend. To the Sophomore Class, just a bit of advice: Love thy teacher. Don't brag, if you'd be Seniors nice. And now each of us has a single request To leave to some other a quality blest. Ralph Mifflin to Dick Camp and Dean Stapleton- A little man, too, was Napoleon. L. McKern gives D. Scoles his loud voice and his perch On the hood of a car-basketball crowds to search. Clara Rockwell, her shy, modest mien doth commit To Don Campbell, in vain hopes that he will use it. Dot Hanson, her bottle of tonic addresses To Elsie M. and Mil. Johnson, as they seek for long tresses. Byron Lind leaves his irons for a real marcel wave To Clydie O'Keefe. Hope the kinks will behave. Kenneth .Stone hasn't aught he can leave to posterity, Save a piece of chewed gum and a spiced notoriety. Theo. Brooks leaves his luck in his test and his fine pull With the teacher of science, to make someone successful. Lois English, to her little sister, Gayle, doth make this plea, She'll not overload, or break the plate glass windows in Whoopee. Herman Lindow leaves the Hydorn lad his boyish sweetness mild. Eula Durkee to Wilma Harlan-her place of only child. Marv Pump doth leave to Lida, love and basketball advice. So that Colville never will the victory have to sacrifice. 26 George Knapp and Gerald Swartout, leave their hungry looks and lean To Billie Burnett, and say It keeps our minds more keen. To any bookish people or librarians of the future, D. Koerner, Harriet Mathis, and C. Spedden leave their ways demure. Webb Wells, his fetching Ways to Ted Bender decided to send, In hope that Ted may get himself a lovely lady friend. Viv Smith and Vio Seney leave ten extra pounds of weight To Beth Dane and Lyda Flansburg, to help keep them sedate. L. Stevens leaves her high notes and little music treats For Senior program use next year to Ruthie Myrtle Dietz. John George, to Wallace Bannon and to Bud Mahoney, cash To buy a cup just made to care for bigga black mustache. Cliff Webb now leaves his football suit to big Bob Morrison, And Floryn Rhode his bashfulness to Tressa Kennison. M. Camp and Irene Hardin leave their elevator thrills To Freda Vine, Ruth Shepherdson, with hopes for spiny chills. Floyd Hall, his place as Senor in a great big class of girls, He leaves to any boy with nerve and Spanish words to hurl. Marion Wright and H. McGregor leave two suits of rompers red To basketball and girls who'll keep the Colville score ahead. Ann Renninger, her typing desk, so neat and black and strong, She leaves, because it is too big for her to take along. George Webb and Ralda Day leave can openers and catsup To other little girls who'll batch and try to keep the house up. Eletha Hoeft to Buck McCammon and his colleague, Benton Bailey, Sends the gift of leaving school on morn and afternoon daily. Sylvia Myers leaves a valued gift to little Eunice More, Her pomes and readings in her public speaking repertoire. Paul Coffey leaves his brilliance and his aptitude for specd To Hughie Claar, in hope he may the rest the class exceed. Lucy Mosher leaves her offices and many activities To tall Francis Benson, who'll go to the top with ease. Ev Moser, her wave and the laughter in eyes, Leaves to match Mazie Smith's smile and comical guise. Some Seniors leave outstanding track places elegant To Juniors they hope will prove worthy contestants. Mich Day to Bob Hanna her much envied place In the standing broad grin showing plain on her face. Marian Smith, who at high and low gurgles was winner, Leaves her place to Dorris Thomas, who is but a beginner. Evelyn Hughes and Theresa Schuerman, their place in the shout put To Ev Hoeft, Enid Stevens, to increase voice output. Thelma Curry, her place in the standing broad bluff To Evelyn Johnson, so she'll have enough. The scribes of the Class of '31, The choicest traits we each possess Thinking of life that's just begun, To bring new Seniors happiness, Do here affix our hand and seal, To give them of our illustrious ups As we bequeath in manner real And hasten our departing steps. 1SignedJ: Class of '31. Some members of the party led in athletics, others in orchestra and other activities. They also showed their wisdom in the choice of a class ring, having the High School Symbol, the Indian. The climax that marked the ascent as memorable was the Junior Prom, but the last height was reached on the day school was dismissed. It was presented in the Senior High School' Auditorium, April 17. The scene of this operetta is laid in Persia, Asia. Billy and Ted, two American mining engineers, come to Persia to work in the Shah's gold mines. Ted falls in love with Zohdah, the Shah's daughter, and Billy falls in love with Lohlah, Zohdah's girl chum, while Zohdah's old nurse, Nowobeh, pursues Sam, the boy's colored servant. The Shah has other plans for his daughter's future, and returns with Same- craba, an Arab shiek, whom he wishes Zohdah to marry. The shie-k turns out to be an impostor, and the Shah throws Ted and Billy into prison for their attentions to Zohdah, Lohlah and Nowobeh. As Ted says, All's well that ends well, and you may soon expect invita- tions to a triple wedding in the Garden of the Shah. CAST Zohdah ...... .,............,... He will be back next year. Benton Bailey, Guard-Although comparatively smaller than other mem- bers of the squad, Benton's playing, both on offense and defense, was a distinct feature of every contest. Hughie Claar, Halfback-Claar was one of the outstanding backs in the league. He would have been chosen to play in the Shrine game had it not been for injuries which kept him out of a couple of games. Everett McCammon, Halfback-Passing combination from Campbell to Mc- Cammon was a bane to the existence of opposing players. Clifford Webb, Halfback-Webb was the fastest man on the squad, and used his speed effectively in the open. He will be missed next year. Clinton Hydorn, Quarterback-Hydorn was a good signal barker, and his aggressiveness, along with his ability to carry the pigskin, spelled disaster to some of the opposing teams. Wallace Bannon, End-Being a good pass receiver, he was always a threat. Few gains were made around this end. Floryn Rhode, End-Floryn's ability to cover punts always brought us out on top in the exchange of punts. Rhode will be graduated this year. Bob Morrison, Tackle-Bob was in the thick of the battle of every game, and his never-say-die spirit was an inspiration to the other members of the squad. Dave Williams, Center-Dave was light for this position, but he filled it capably. Next year Dave should be a star linesman for Colville. 5l Ray Paxton, Tackle-Although only a Sophomore, his playing came up to the standard of an experienced man. Much is expected from him next year. Byron Lind, Tackle-Lind started the season playing good football, but because of injuries, he was kept out of most of the last games. He will not be back next year. - Dale Wiley, Guard-Wiley played good football at guard, to which position he was shifted from fullback, where he played last year. Dale will be missed next season. Bob Ledgerwood, Fullback--In all the games in which he took part, Bob showed his ability. The offense next year will probably be built around him. Francis Benson, Center-Francis always played hard in every game in which he took part. Ted Bender, Tackle-Ted is one of those light, tough players who make a big man earn his laurels. His spirit was outstanding, and he should play a lot of football next year. Jake Ronald, Guard-Jake's consistent playing was one of the reasons that Colville had a successful season this year. Clarence Allgor, Guard-Clarence performed well when he was put into a game. He showed up especially well in the Republic game. Floyd Hall, End-It is too bad that Floyd has not another year or two to put in playing football for Colville. He was a good player, and will be missed next year. Wallace Anderson, End-Wally proved convincibly that one may be handi- capped by lack of weight and still play football. Next year he will see plenty of action. Russell Norenberg, End-Russell was handicapped by an old injury in his wrist. He will be in good condition next season and will play a great deal. Paul Coffey-Coffey played equally well at guard and tackle, and performed capably whenever he was sent into a game. Theo Brooks, Manager-Theo is one who performed his tasks and always had a smile. He took care of the equipment, and did it exceedingly well. Colville had a very successful season, winning five games out of the eight scheduled games. This was Coach Jimmy Mitchell's first year here, and he had green material to work with, but he developed a team which efficiently held up the honors for Colville. -Dorothy Bone FOOTBALL SCORES Sep. Lend an ear, If a story true you'd hear. Colville High School 1930 Makes the setting for their story. Announcements in general assembly went thus: If you aspire to be champions, as you do, I trust, 53 Hie you hence, where awaits a coach, Of whose championships we all might boast. Hie them hence they quickly did, Their basketball coach to see. 'Twas none other than Miss Roberts, Ready to coach them to victory. Long practice sessions daily, Till at last it fair would seem Theirs was a basket squad Fit to challenge any team. Then came a night of combat, With ancient rivals in the sport. Ah! How quickly were they vanquished From Colville's maple court. Many games were played that season By this courageous loyal squad, Each deserves her name be written In The Hall of Fame, reserved for Gods Captain Mary, tall and agile, Dependable and fast, With Agnes and Georgia as running mates, All rivals were outclassed. At basket shooting, Marion and Lois did excel To the nth degree of perfection, And you'll hear many a critic tell How Ralda, Catherine, and Lida, Guards of an enviable caliber, Kept all opponents in constant fear. To Lucy, an emblazoned pennant Should be given for her work. A manager she, of ability, And duties never shirked. Thus the 1930 season Did pass in Colville High, Many games were hard contested, As this team did nobly vie With others in their county 'lo be champions or die. And when the crucial game was played, Lo! It ended in a tie. All hail, to this deserving team Who did strive-and not in vain 5 For from now till time immortal, Remembered shall be their fame. H. A. C. and C Club sponsored the All-High Mixer given Sep. 23. This is a vearly event which has been taken over by the two clubs for the past three years As usual, it was a success, with clever decorations, snappy numbers between dances, and refreshments in the form of punch and wafers. Hahn lgartg The Girls' League gave the most unique party of the year on Friday, Nov. '7, when they entertained at a Hobo Dance. The decorations were in keeping with the hobo motive. Every girl present was arrayed in the regalia of a real old-fashioned hobo, whiskers, ragged and patched shirt and trousers, with and without shoes, toothless, and all the earmarks of a regular bum. The theme song of the evening was Bum Again. First prize was awarded to Ruth Deitz and second prize to Frances May. A program in keeping with the affair was fur- nished by Rose Staeheli, Gayle English, Cleora Hoover, Percy Lawrence, and P99-Tl Wiley. --Rose Staeheli All 1-Iigh Igarig After being victorious over the Republic football squad in a hard-fought battle, Nov. 7, the students celebrated by having a dance in the gymnasium. A clever program was given, and refreshments were served. The Seven Devils furnished peppy music. Lots of fun. -Carmen Kopsland Goetter. 60 Svnph-ilirnzh lgarig The Sophies gave a party. The leaves in hundreds cameg The ashes, oaks and maples, And trees of every name. --Just to furnish the decoration. The gym iioor was all bright and shinyg Everything was grand. The Sophs and Freshies gaily danced To Robert Dunham's band. -Just to keep the blues away. The program was so snappyg The refreshments, too, were fine. The Freshies then resolved To give the Sophs as good a time. -Just to furnish recompense. -Alice Knapp Svrninr-Snph liartg The victorious Juniors were entertained by the Sophs and Seniors on March 6, following a successful ticket selling contest for the Chewelah basketball game. The gymnasium was cleverly decorated, using crepe paper, balloons, and confetti. Music was furnished by the Seven Devils orchestra, and everyone who attended had an enjoyable evening. -Ralda Day ,Svhipmrrrk igdflg Robinson Cruso would have felt very much at home had he visited the Col- ville High School gymnasium on the evening of March 27, when the Girls' League entertained the boys of the school at a Shipwrecked Party. One could not help but feel that he were on some deserted island if he but glanced at the life savers in the four corners of the gymnasium and the white flag waving over the orchestra in the center of the floor. The girls and boys both proved to be very good sports in participating in Tolo Night. -Lois English Engn' ilivagur lgarig , A return Tolo dance was given by the Boys' League on the evening of April 24. The boys showed the girls that they could also be good sports, and the girls portrayed their appreciation by having a marvelous evening, enjoying everything which their charming hosts presented. In the short existence of our Junior High School we have been very success- ful in scholastics, as well as athletics. Many honors have been awarded students in both. In the county meet we won honors in spelling, declamation, art, home economics, manual arts, volley ball and baseball. The students are especially proud of their athletic record. So far there have been four championship football teams, two champion boys' and 'girls' basketball teams, three championship baseball teams, and three championship girls' and lzoys' volley ball teams. Some remarkable plays have been produced by the students. Each play is produced with a different cast, to oHer more students an opportunity in self ex- pression. l ' J 3luninr L5i,ghli'l,lQlr'l' tant tj, f Ullpfjlb If 'thai' 1 5 1. The only Junior High School play of the year was presented on October 3, 1930, in the High School Auditorium. The Wizard of Oz proved to be a beauti- ful play and fantasy. The scenes were especially beautiful in the land of Oz. Little Dorothy- of Kansas suddenly found herself in the land of Oz, where she met strange people, and had to perform unusual things, before she could return to her aunt and uncle in Kansas. Out of 12 games played, we won every game and annexed another championship to our many trophies. Our Grade won the championship of the North Half, but were defeated in the county meet. Both the Junior and Grade teams have made a good start on the 1931 sea- son by defeating all the teams. they have played so far this year. The Junior High has defeated Marcus High and Kettle Falls Junior High teams, and the Grade has won from Valley. The county is awarding silver cups instead of pen- nants to both teams this year. We are in hopes, with the bright outlook we have, that We can annex both cups to our many other awards we have won. There are several games scheduled for both teams to be played yet. Sometimes a boy is voted in because he has faithfully turned out for all' athletics, and has never played enough in any one sport to entitle him to a letter. This is true this year of a number of boys in the club. The primary mo- tive of the club is to develop an interest in athletics and promote a feeling of good fellowship among the students. From this club has come the Papoose Club, an honorary athletic club. To become a member, one must have earned two letters in major sports and have a scholastic standing of C or better. Our annual initiation and banquet was held on January 12, in the Home Economics rooms. The food was prepared and served by the members of the club. The initiation for those receiving basketball and baseball letters will be held at the Pend Oreille lakes sometime in May, WEARERS OF GOLDEN C Sidney Martin, Presidentx Walter Milesft Lloyd Ronald, Vice Presidenti' Johnnie Campi' Robert Staeheli, Sec.-Treasf' Stanley Onstott Floyd Morris?
