THESPIANS Although most every high school dramatist is desirous of becoming a member of the Na- tional Thespian Society, only a very few attain this goal. One must have taken a major role in a three act play, taken two major roles in one act plays, minor roles in one act plays, or rendered outstanding service in some other capacity. Officers for the first semes- ter have been Philip Zaring, president, joyce Ann Kelly, vicefpresident. 'QO- OUILL AND SCROLL The highest goal which a journalist in CHS seeks and hopes to attain is to be recog- nized as a member of Quill and Scroll. This year l4 members of the Log and Triangle staffs were accepted into this national journalistic honorary society. To be eligible for membership the student must have done outstanding work on the school yearbook or newspaper, be a junior or senior, must be in the upper one-third of his class scholastically, and be approved by the national secretary. One of the finest laurels that can be bestowed on a high school student is for him to be selected as a member of the National Honor Society. To be eligible for membership, the student must excel in four fields: character, scholarship, lead- ership, and service. He must have the recommendation of several members of the faculty, be in the upper one-third of his class, have an l lA, l2B, or l2A class rating, and be chosen by the special committee of teachers and the principal. This year the total membership is 50. The officers for this year are Harold Hoeferkamp, president, Shirley Barnett, vice-president, Howard Crussel, secretary, Don Scheidt, sergeant-at-arms. Miss Maude Davis serves as treasurer and sponsor for this organization. 28

The membership is limited to those boys and girls who have been awarded block C's for their outstand- ing participation in athletics. Student managers and cheer leaders are included. The organization has numerous activities dealing with athletics. One of the foremost of these is ushering at the home football and basketball games. This year for the first time the ushers at the basketball games wore special green sweaters with the yellow letters Ushers , making the boys more easily recognized. They also distributed programs at the home football games, The club also manages the grade school tourneys, pro- viding the coaches for the various teams, referees, and other officials. They also manage the concessions at the industrial league basketball games. Several of these athletes are Lewis Essex and Dick Rutan, who served as president and vice-president respectively for the first semester.
