SUPERINTENDENT We associate Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales with childhood and the period of life in which we grow up, After the growing up period ends, the rhymes and tales are placed in memory's storehouse, intermingled with the memories of happy experiences of other days. The older one becomes, and the farther removed we are from childhood and youth, the more these early experiences take on the qualities of tales which we shall always treasure and enjoy whether they be fairy or otherwise. Luther A, Lockwood. PRINCIPAL Thinking of the theme presented in the Log this year takes one back to the nursery rhymes of old. Today, even though living in an atomic age with an uneasy feelf ing for the future, we have our old King Coles, Bo Peeps and even a few Simple Simons in all walks of life. Let us attain through education and clean living a true sense of duty, happiness, and contentment that the nursery folk have implanted upon the human soul. ludson Erne. I8 l 'Q' These men with Superintendent Lockwood, are the overseers of our Columbus Schools. Columbus is growing and so is their job. They are doing a good job, too, as shown by our excellent schools. One of the finest laurels that can be bestowed on a high school student is for him to be selected as a member of the National Honor Society. To be eligible for membership, the student must excel in four fields: character, scholarship, lead- ership, and service. He must have the recommendation of several members of the faculty, be in the upper one-third of his class, have an l lA, l2B, or l2A class rating, and be chosen by the special committee of teachers and the principal. This year the total membership is 50. The officers for this year are Harold Hoeferkamp, president, Shirley Barnett, vice-president, Howard Crussel, secretary, Don Scheidt, sergeant-at-arms. Miss Maude Davis serves as treasurer and sponsor for this organization. 28 THESPIANS Although most every high school dramatist is desirous of becoming a member of the Na- tional Thespian Society, only a very few attain this goal. One must have taken a major role in a three act play, taken two major roles in one act plays, minor roles in one act plays, or rendered outstanding service in some other capacity. Officers for the first semes- ter have been Philip Zaring, president, joyce Ann Kelly, vicefpresident. For the second semester Ellanor Pruitt and Don Collins have served as presia dent and vice-president. Miss Mildred Murray acts as spon- sor for the group. Kneeling: l. Carmichael, I. Kelly. 'QO- OUILL AND SCROLL The highest goal which a journalist in CHS seeks and hopes to attain is to be recog- nized as a member of Quill and Scroll. This year l4 members of the Log and Triangle staffs were accepted into this national journalistic honorary society. To be eligible for membership the student must have done outstanding work on the school yearbook or newspaper, be a junior or senior, must be in the upper one-third of his class scholastically, and be approved by the national secretary. LL C CLUB C club is one of the two clubs in high school devoted to athletics. The membership is limited to those boys and girls who have been awarded block C's for their outstand- ing participation in athletics. Student managers and cheer leaders are included. The organization has numerous activities dealing with athletics. One of the foremost of these is ushering at the home football and basketball games. This year for the first time the ushers at the basketball games wore special green sweaters with the yellow letters Ushers , making the boys more easily recognized. They also distributed programs at the home football games, The club also manages the grade school tourneys, pro- viding the coaches for the various teams, referees, and other officials. They also manage the concessions at the industrial league basketball games. Several of these athletes are Lewis Essex and Dick Rutan, who served as president and vice-president respectively for the first semester. The second semester lim Foulke served as president with Bob Adams as vice-president. Mr, Glenn Adams serves as advisor. 30 Row Four: B. Kelly, R. Van Wye Mr. Glenn Adams, B. Meyer, H. New- som, D. The most pop- ular events were the dances presented after the home foot- ball and basketball games. Music for these dances was furnished partly by dance bands and partly by records, There was a new type of dance presented this year-the Sock Hop , with a prize awarded to the person wearing the most distinctive type of footwear. Their record dances, introduced for the first time this year, also proved to be a definite success. The president and viceepresident for the first semester were Iudy Wilkes and Diane Sohn, the second semester, Diane was president and Burdette Graham vice-president. A student was chosen from each home room to act as represent- ative for his particular group in speaking to the Assembly. A code of ethics for students while in the school buildings was presented at the begina ning of the year. This was drawn up by the members of the Assembly and accepted fa- vorably by the student body, The main goal of the organization this year has been to contribute financially to a fund from which money will be taken to in- stall a public address system in the high school. To accomplish this, the Assembly op- erates a popcorn machine in the basement of the main building and manages concese sions at the home football and basketball games. A system has been set up by which the Row Seven: L. Whitehouse, L. Essex, H. Stiltz. various clubs distribute the concessions one night each at home games. From the profits which are realized from the operations of their two projects, the Assembly receives 257, the Principal's Fund 25't, and 50' is presented to the Public Address System Fund. An all school fair was sponsored by the group in the spring. Booths set up in the halls and gym were decorated and operated by the various clubs in high school with profits going to the Public Address System Fund. Don Burns has led the Student Assembly as president, Marilyn Green, vice-president, joy George, secretary, Harold Hoeferkamp, treasurer, loyce Ann Kelly, assistant treas- urer, lim Dietz, sergeant-at-arms. Versteeg AMIGGS l-lI'Y To create, maintain, and extend throughf out the school and community high stand- ards of Christian character is the creed of all the l-li-Y clubs throughout the United States. This year the Amigos l-li'Y, a club of freshmen, newly organized in September of l949, was able to take this creed as the goal of the club in the school and com- munity. Leading the club through their first year are officers: Alton Chaney, president, jerry l-lilycord, vice-president, john Quilleon, sec- retary, joe Swope, treasurer, Randy Bridges, sergeant-at-armsg Cary Lindsey, chaplain. Mr, Anthony Mitchell is faculty advisor. Iaglm -5 , 'ii SOUVERAlN HI--Y Souverain l-lifY was created in the spring of l949 from a group of freshman boys. These boys, now sophomores, have gone a long way in making their individual stand- ards equal with those of the l-li-Y platform . . .clean speech, clean sports, clean scholar- ship, and clean living. As this year's revenue project the club sold Bulldog pins and blue and white caps with Bulldogs on them. The sophomore leaders of the club are Tom Lockwood, president, jim Potts, vice- president, Tom Conlin, secretary, Mickey Dugan, treasurer, Buddy Reno, sergeanteat- arms, Buryl McFadden, chaplain. Mr. Gerald Quilleon sponsors the club. HI-Y Hi VY, a leading service club in high school, seems to be constantly at work on new proj- ects designed tor the betterment of the school and community. The week school opened, Hi-Y was ready and waiting to take charge ot the second-hand book turnover in their book store set up for that purpose several years ago. Demonstrating their interest in worthy causes, the club again conducted their an- nual T.B. Penny Line in the main hall, which rated the seniors as the most generous class, The boys also passed the blanket at a basket- ball game to collect coins from the fans tor use against tuberculosis. Another ot the club's services is to regulate the hall and stair traffic between classes. With the ex- ceedingly large number of students enrolled in school this year, this service is indise pensable. fl-, A 5 f' f 6 t . PJ-A-ntl .g A fx X RQ ' Nm, aft? U B The Dramatic Club can again proudly boast of another most impressive year in the field of dramatic art. The Barretts of Wim- pole Street was presented in February and acclaimed by many to be one of the finest three act plays yet presented by the group. The club gave a one act play before Thanks- giving vacation called The Howl of the Wolf , and they presented two such plays during the Christmas holidays- Ye Who Sit by the Fire , given before the student body, and Puppy Love , presented before various social groups in the community. Miss Mildred Murray, sponsor of the group, gives much time and advice in direct- ing their staged efforts. Miss Elsie Butler also serves the club as advisor and sponsor. LEX Q11 SKETCH CLUB All of us at one time or another have looked at a scene of natural or man made beauty and have wished for powers which would enable us to reproduce half its beauty to a piece of canvas or paper, so that it would stay with us always, For most of us this remains a wish. For some it is a natural talent. Our art department promotes and developes such talents by means of the many courses offered. ln l924 the Sketch Club was organized by Miss Lillian Volland to develop in these art students an appreciation of the arts and crafts in the school and community, Since this date the club has taken many trips to art and craft exhibitions in many parts of the state and have received a great deal of inspiration from such journeys, Social highlights of the club included a fall outing, a formal Christmas dance, a spring treasure hunt and party, and the an- nual spring breakfast for the seniors. The membership is composed of those students who are actively interested in music. The organization is composed of two groups-one meeting with the blue clubs, the other with the white. Both groups are pictured above. The main purpose of the club is to teach the members how to perform properly and effectively before an audience, During the meetings the members perform and receive constructive criticism from fellow members. ln case there is a call for music department members to perform before some organiza- tion, the members on the current program are called upon. 1ohn Stearns and Delores Spalding are president and vice president respectively of the white club, while Phyllis Epperson is president and Mary Alice Patton vice presi- dent of the blue club. Mr. Brad Chaffin and Mr. Roger Helman sponsor the two groups. SYMPHONETTE The symphonette, under the direction of Mr. Roger Helman, is quite an active organ- ization in our school. ln the series of citye school sponsored radio programs the ore chestra has given three performances. Again this year, as customary, the organization dis- played its talents between each scene and act in the Dramatic Club play, The Bar- retts of Wimpole Street and the senior class play, Seventeenth Summer . In March the symphonette presented a concert in the gymnasium which was highly appreciated by those who attended. Don Burns, Hugh Newsom, Don Meyer, Bob Euckner, Ross Higgins and Paul Martin are active in several sports They are making a good show for their class. Scholastically Donald Hoeferkamp leads the field with close to an A' average. As the curtain goes up on our school plays we see loyce Ann Kelly and Ellanor Pruitt taking leading roles. ,Y The junior class, sponsored by Miss Alta Redmond, always has a good time around November electing class officers Candi' dates are first nominated and then voted on at a later date. There is much campaigning and a real battle for the offices. The main duty of the officers is preparing for the Prom, which is one of the biggest affairs in our high school career. Wasn't the theme a wonderful one this year? Dancing in the middle of a jungle was so thrilling and the decorations were just perfect with leaves and animals all aroundl l'm sure this Prom of the Sl class was the best ever. Basketball and volleyball are considered major sports, gym- nastics, tennis, bowling, swimming, and folk dancing are also quite popular. The Girls' Athletic Association, sponsored by Miss Euzetta Foster, meets every Mon- day night at the gym. The girls have formed two basketball teams which play among themselves and also play cut of town teams. Bonnie Reece is as deadly accurate on long shots as Hugh Newsom, and Annie Dickey is as speedy and tricky as Charlie Lentz. The will to win the game is always there. The girls also participate in Play Days. chelle, I. Harrison, M Enochs, M, Reynard, C Ritter, S. Broady, D Hendricks, N, Beatty D. Camden. Row Four: S. Curry B. Turner, S. Talking- ton, I.
