Mr. J. P. Young discusses plans for the new addition to Columbus Senior High School with Don Schleichardt, the building superintendent. In Dedication Mr. J. P. Young, who has provided leadership as Superintendent of the Columbus City Schools for the past seventeen years and has devoted forty-four years to the held of education, retired J uly 1, 1965, after a long and successful career. Mr. Young was born in Kentucky and came to Nebraska at the age of ten. He spent his early years at Kenesaw, Nebraska, and later taught for two years at a rural school near Kenesaw. He served as Superintendent of Schools in Macy, Waterbury, Lyons, and David City, Nebraska, and in Carroll, Iowa, prior to coming to Columbus. Mr. Young has served the community of Columbus during its years of rapid growth and expansion. Under his able leadership, provision has been made for educational facilities that have accommodated a school population which has more than doubled. He supervised the entire building program throughout the Columbus City Schools which included additions to Highland Park and Emerson schools, and new buildings at Williams, West Park, North Park, and Senior High. Since Mr. Young had started the building program, this past year he continued his work by supervising the building of new additions to the junior and senior high schools and to North Park and First Ward. As an educator, Mr. Young is known and respected throughout the state of Nebraska. He has been active in professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels. Some of these organizations are The American Association of School Administrators, The National Education Association, The Nebraska State Education Association, and the Schoolmasters club. In fulfilling his duties as an educator, Mr. Young’s first concern has always been that which is best for his students. His quiet dignity and sense of justice have provided inspiration for both teachers and pupils; and his willingness to lend an ear or to extend a helping hand is deeply appreciated by all who know him. We, the members of the Annual Staff, would like to take this opportunity to represent the student body and faculty in thanking Mr. Young for a job well done. 7
