SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Presenting the seniors. . .the athletes, the think ers, the musicians and all who have helped to make the last four short years the best and hap- piest memories of our lives. We have lived, laugh- ed, and learned--and loved every minute of it! As we look back to our very first exciting mo- ments in Columbus High, we realize that we have had very capable leaders and officers to help us attain our goal--graduation. As freshmen we were guided by Harlan Pet- ter, president, Charles Brentzel, vice-president, Sue Welch, secretary, Ann Luchsinger, treasurer, and Kenneth Roy Bailey, sponso1'. Receiving spe- cial honors this year were Beverly Egger, as a majorette and Sandra Briswalter, as assistant cheerleader. We chose Sue Welch and Charles Speice as our attendants to the Sports King and Queen. Gaining a little more courage and understand- ing, we entered our sophomore year under the leadership of Robert Pope, president, Donald Ehlers, vice-president, and Shirley Ewert, secre- tary-treasurer with Kenneth Roy Bailey continu- ing as our sponsor. Shirley Hoveling was selected cheerleader, and Robert Pope, Charles Speice, James Murphy, Gerald Karlin, Philip Hocken- berger, Ronald Tschauner, and Donald Lundin proved eligible for C club membership. James Murphy and Ann Luchsinger served as attendants to the King and Queen of Sports. Returning in the fall of '51 as proud upper classmen, we immediately settled down to the tasks ahead of us. Our officers this year were Gerald Karlin, president, Ann Luchsinger, vice- president, Betty Olson, secretary, and Harlan Petter, treasurer, with Robert Costello and Ula Mae Schall our sponsors. Our first important job was to prepare a successful Sports Rally-which we called Dog Patch and featured Lil' Abner and Daisy Mae along with the Sadie Hawkins Day Race. Our new additions to C club were Donald Schupbach, James Ernst, Gordon Goldenstein, J. Louden, D. -12- STARS Janice Potter .............,.,................................... Organizational officers were Louis Welch, secretary of Future Farmers of America, Shirley Ewert, vice-president of Future Homemakers of America, Harlan Petter, treasurer of Hi-Y, Elaine Michaelsen, vice-president of Junior Librarians, Gordon Goldenstein, vice-president of Student Council, Susan Bakenhus, vice-president of Thes- pians, Alyce Zwiener, secretary of Thespians, Bea Kluver, president of Y-Teens, and Carolyn Engel, vice-president of Y-Teens. Sandra Briswalter be- came a regular cheerleader. Violet Inselman re- ceived the honor of being chosen Queen of Har- vest of Harmony in Grand Island. Charles Speice and Marilyn Burman were named king and queen of Twelfth Night. Janice Potter and Ronald Tschauner were our attendants for the Sports Rally. The highlight of the year was our Prom, America in Paris, given for the seniors on April 25. The gymnasium was gaily decorated in the French national colors-red, white, and blue and featuring miniatures of the Eiffel Towel and the Arch of Triumph. Gerald Karlin, president of the junior class, gave the welcome, and James Schultz, president of the senior class, gave the response. Ann Luchsinger represented the American Legion Auxiliary at Girls' State, and Charles Speice represented the Lions Club and Gerald Karlin, the Rotary Club at Boys' State. As we entered our senior year, we were hap- py and yet we were sad that this would be the conclusion of all our activities, our fun together- all the little things that seemed so important at the time. One of the outstanding events of the year was the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, Harlan Petter and Sandra Briswalter. Betty Olson and Duane Peterson, and Beverly Egger and James Ernst were their attendants. Shirley Hoveling was chosen head cheerlead- er and Sandra Briswalter and Violet Inselman were chosen regular cheerleaders. At the annual Junior Sports Rally, Shirley Hoveling and Robert Pope reigned as King and Queen. On December 9 and 10 we presented our class play, Charley's Aunt, under the direction of Miss Sharon Fritzler, with the following cast of char- acters: Duane Peterson, Jack Chesney, Donald Lundin, Brassett, Gerald Karlin, Charley Wyke- ham, Philip Hockenberger, Lord Fancourt Bab- berley, Susan Bakenhus, Kitty Verdun, Darlene Henke, Amy Spettigue, Donald Ehlers, Sir Francis Chesney, James Jeldon, Stephen Spettigue, Shir- ley Mae Ewert, Donna Lucia D'Alvadorez, Janice Potter, Ela Delahay, and Shirley Hoveling, Stu- dent Director.
