Agmrv.. . , ..,,... .....,., It was impossible to recapture the awe inspired by Comet Halley as it made its thirty-first recorded visit. Wit- nessing the comet was a once in a life- time thrill since it only comes every seventy-six years. The comet most re- cently made its spectacular orbit in 1910. Because the appearance of Com- et Halley distinguished this year as spe- cial, the COHISCAN staff chose the comet to visualize our theme We Out- shine Them All. The comet was both rare and superi- or, as is our school. CHS has long been a respected institution and is held in high regard for its achievements in all areas. Students and administration have immense pride and a spirit that binds everyone together with the pur- pose of making their school the best ever. We are a superior school because we are never complacent about our ac- complishments nor discouraged about our shortcomings. We constantly evalu- ate and update in order to meet the challenge. We are a rare school be- cause we refuse to be less than the best. We Outshine Them All. COMET WATCH November 1985 - During the week of the 10th, it was possible to see Comet Halley with the aid of telescopes or pow- erful binoculars. On the 27th, it came within 58 million miles of the earth - its second closest approach - but was not yet at its brightest. December 1985 - Early this month, Comet Halley became visible to the na- ked eye. It appeared in the southwest sky as darkness fell, After the 29th, a short tail was visible with binoculars. January 1986 - On the 1st, Comet Halley was 108 million miles from the earth and 94 million miles from the sun. lt was visible low in the western sky after sunset. February 1986 - When it reached perihelion on the 9th, Comet Halley was on the opposite side of the sun. Late in the month, viewers in the southern Unit- ed States were able to see it in the morn- ing sky west of the sun. March 1986 - Comet Halley re- turned to the morning sky for viewers in the northern United States. Though it gave off less light, it appeared brighter to us because it was closer to the earth. April 1986 - On the 10th, Comet Halley was at its closest approach to the l earth, 40 million miles away. lt was too far south to see except from the southern states. ln late April, it was visible again in the north in the evening sky. By May, binoculars were needed to see it. The diagrams above chart the comet's course from March to April, and in the month of January. Notice the drift of the comet's tail. Since the tail always faces away from the sun, at certain points in a comet's orbit the tail shines ahead almost like a headlight. The picture at left is a computer enhanced photograph of Comet Halley in 1910, taken by astronomers at the Lowell Observatory and Na- tional Optical Astronomy Observatories. Comet Info 5
