SPEAK OF THE DEVIL AND HE WILL APPEAR IN ... Opening .................. 2 Student Life ............ 16 Honors and Clubs ........ 32 Faculty ................. 90 Sports ................. 106 Classes ................ 154 Ads .................... 212 Closing ................ 236 It was June 1984. The halls of Columbus High School slowly emptied for the summer days that awaited. The excitement of summer fun, moon- lit nights on Panama City Beach, and long, lazy afternoons became prevalent. The Blue Devil spirit lived on, even though the school was empty. 2 0pening We spoke of the Blue Devils and their undying spirit. The spirit found at Columbus High School, that energetic drive within all of its students, was and always had been a simple tradition. It began ninety-seven years ago, and every year added to its momentum. Opening 3 Our spirit was shown in various ways. At pep rallies, the bleachers vibrated as the drummers congregated in the middle of the gym for the playing of the Alma Mater. As was the custom, spirits ran high when we gathered around the bonfire for Homecoming week festivities. 4 Opening After sunset, gathering together at Lakebottom Park, we would be warmed not only by the fire’s heat, but also by the warm feelings of friendship and Blue Devil pride. In the Spring, dressed formally for the prom, we would again experience that special mixture of feelings. Opening 5 Suddenly summer was over. Never mind that the thermometer said it was ninety-eight degrees outside! It was time for Columbus’ Blue Devils to start back to school. Summer’s long hours abruptly turned into fall’s regimented schedules. Multitudes of schedule cards were filled out. 6 Opening We may have been filling out cards, but our minds were filled with memories of fun times shopping at the malls and Prince’s movie debut in “Purple Rain”. The Jackson’s Victory Tour was often the topic of our conversations, as the Jackson’s made their way across the country. Opening 7 Thoughts of music and Weekends left because we suddenly realized that we had mistakenly gotten scheduled for Physical Education three times a day. We hung up our swimsuits and packed up our shorts, anyway. We turned off the MTV, and settled down to concentrate on our algebra. 8 0pening We spent our money on notebooks instead of The Cars’ Heartbeat City tape, and we no longer found the time to sit out and perfect our tans. We watched our savings decrease while our wardrobes increased with shirts containing Ralph Lauren’s label or purses signed by Gucci. Opening 9 The 1984-85 school year started out with a combination of both the old and the new. In town, there were new and better places to eat. At Columbus High, we were still served fried chicken on Wednesday, fish on Friday, and the choice of the ever-popular salad bar on any day. 10 Opening We still shopped at Columbus Square and Peachtree, but we were anxious for Mansours and Parisians, two new department stores, to open. In the fall, when the Southern Open came again, the Blue Devils helped out as usual. The event drew professional golfer Jack Nicklaus. Opening ll 12 Opening Headlines in 1984 were filled with the pre- sidential election. The Mondale Ferraro ticket reflected new attitudes throughout the nation. There were new attitudes at Columbus High School also. We welcomed a new principal, Dr. Ronnie Shehane, and we welcomed five new teachers. Dr. Shehane came to Columbus High with innovative ideas but with traditional spirit. Upperclassmen greeted new freshmen, who were anxious to play the role of enthusiastic Blue Devils. Everyone worked together adjusting to a new school year and a set of new rules. Opening 13 DEDICATION Since coming to Columbus High School in 1969, you have been doing much more than just teaching us. Teaching is important, of course, and your Social Studies classes are always demanding of us as students. You make learning challenging while making it fun. A teacher is a unique person. She is an electrician, a referee, a janitor, a policeman, an artist, an interior decorator, a preacher, a philosopher, a salesman, a psychologist, a good sport, and a friend. A teacher plans, worries, calls, organizes, listens and advises. 14 Dedication You do these things, and even more. You are always around when Senior Council needs a firm guiding hand or when Girl’s Civitan needs a morale boost. We know that somehow, you get a sense of fulfillment from our accomplishments. Our success is your success. We are grateful that you are standing in the wings for us, and it is time now for you to be recognized. And so it is, that we, the Senior Class, dedicate our 1985 COHISCAN to you. Miss Patricia K. Lewis Dedication 15 16 STUDENT LIFE Our Alma Mater so strong Honor untarn’d by any wrong Far rings the triumphant song Dear ole Blue Devils, in work or revels Earth shall know their worth Always taunted, never daunted We are, as always, Columbus High Kenny Freeman’s talent in break-dancing was unbelievable to his spectators. Sophomore Beth Tomlinson waited patiently for the call of the next cheer. Junior Beth Bone, sophomores Brooke Bone, and freshman Terri Brooks stood still long enough to pose for a picture. Mrs. Urquhart sure did have a rowdy 5th period class didn’t she. “Let’s get crazy!” Senior Jon Hill really got into those games. Seniors Ernie Kirk and Sheri Brown, looked ready for a night on the town. 30 Student Life Sophomore Bonnie O’dell cooled off after being in the hot sun of Panama City. “Was senior Jon Hill really that funny?” Junior Patrick Cosgrove “breaks” for his admiring fans. To a daughter who has brought joy into our lives, we wish for you success and happiness in the future. We love you, Mom and Dad. Congratulations Vickie! You give us happiness unequaled. Love, Mom, Dad, Jeanette, Mary, and Chris. I have come to know that many of life’s greatest challenges also offer life’s greatest rewards. So it is with the 1984-85 COHISCAN. I speak for the entire staff when I say we are proud of our product. I speak for myself when I say “thanks” to those of you who stayed longer than expected, worked harder than requested, and cared deeper than was realized. 1 offer a special thanks to Jon Hill for being a skillful and willing photographer, and to the library and janitorial staffs for cheerfully allowing us access to the darkroom and school after hours. The members of the 1984-85 COHISCAN Staff are: Carlos Alexander, Laurie Atkins, Lindsey Atkins, Ken Broda, Susie Chai, Elizabeth Crawford, Audrey Kurtz, Early McDaniel, Laura Moss, Donald Nichols, Wendy Patrick, Kym Shuttleworth, Lisa Thompson, Beth Tomlinson, and Kyra Wynn. Senior, Lindsey Atkins, was sick and tired of homework by the time May rolled dround. Congratulations to the Class of ’85. Drs. Clason, Miller, Nichols, and Nimmons. took changes to keep CHS fresh and alive with spirit. Freedom and trust gave it personality. However, rules and respect helped us to keep a strong foundation. As we looked back over the year, we realized we had witnessed more changes than we could have possibly predicted. Many new opportunities were offered to us. Trips to England, France, and Mexico were organized by teachers with a willingness to explore. Others chose to explore right in the classroom when guest speakers and artists conducted workshops. 236 Closing Some of the changes were not so welcomed. One of the coldest days of the year left CHS without heat. Teachers and students were bundled from head-to-toe as they flocked to the warmth of the chemistry lab and a few other heated rooms. For about 240 students, these incidents will soon be only afterthoughts; for 1,135 rising students, the four years will be very real. Seniors began new phases of their lives as they graduated from CHS. They entered into a new world hoping to fulfill their many dreams. Closing 237 They reminisced over fond memories of assemblies, college interviews, Powder Puff practices, cap and gown measurements, and graduation rehearshals. Post-graduation trips were planned in hopes of having one last time together before taking on new roles and responsibilities. Naturally, juniors looked forward to the privilege of becoming seniors and displaying good examples to the underclassmen. For both the juniors and seniors, moments during the elegant and exciting prom were now only memories locked away for safe keeping. 238 Closing The sophomores were no longer the baby Blue Devils, and for once they were idolized by the upcoming freshmen. The freshmen became eager to find out about their new surroundings and to make new friends. The faculty and administration helped to maintain the unity and pride of CHS. Working as one, the Blue Devils, after a year full of excitement, were ready to take on new horizons. The past year would be forever in their hearts. The future would be awaiting.
