Dedication 15 STUDENT LIFE Student Life 17 Students at Columbus High School came together with their spirit and their love for one another at club activities, after-school sports, and a myriad of other activities. They did their best whatever the endeavor and gave the activities life. Days like New Wave day and Halloween dress-up day for seniors enlivened the day-to-day existence of school life. And students shared their out-of-school lives in the varied manners consistent with Blue Devil enthusiasm and vigor. Junior Terry Schaeffer tackles one of summer’s tiresome chores. White-Face and Black-Nose Carter “paws” to pose. Junior Jon Hill takes time out to give his car a bath. Sophomores Donna Irvin and Angela Gary sometimes wonder about the price they pay to be fashionable. 18 Student Life Senior Charlie Aiken checks out a newly-delivered Service Merchandise toy. With such an understanding in mind, the Future Nerds of America Organization was established. This group of four senior men existed for the sole purpose of gaining the intellec- tual recognition they felt they had rightfully earned. For years they had roamed the school halls and were considered ordinary students. They had lacked the look of intelligence. Tolerant no longer, they unified and formed a group to be publicly recognized, never again to be confused with the average student. They were the FNA. The inspiring advisor was Mr. Jack Schiffman. The founders of this unusual club were Charles Crawford, Bill VanDinter, Vincent Bolts, and Michael Harris. Honors and Organizations COHISCAN STAFF DEADLINE — To an annual staff member, this word meant trou- ble. Just the mere mention of it brought terror to the hearts of all members of this small staff. It was through their hard work and devotion to the school that the 1983-84 Cohiscan staff completed this book of memories to be shared and treasured always. It was with pride and joy that they also dedicated this book to the student body who had made Columbus High the superior school that it is. Layout artists were Elizabeth Crawford. The 1983 football season started a new beginning for the Blue Devils. Much change was brought about by including a new coaching staff and a new school. The year was an adjustment year for the Blue Devils — players adjusting to coaches and coaches adjusting to players and each other. Though through it all, the Blue Devils set out to prove once again that Columbus High is “Better than Best! After many hard weeks of practice the Blue Devils' first opponent was Newnan, who barely won the game 21-6. Next, Columbus traveled to Central coming up on the short end of an 18-13 score. A steady defense helped win the Blue Devils' first sub-region game with Baker, 13-0. The Blue Devils' next victims were the Jordan High Red Jackets. The Blue Devils won with a fired-up offense and a stingy defense led by Mike Johnson and Lee Ford; the final score was 37-16. The following week the Carver Tigers fell to the Blue Devils by an overwhelming score of 30-6. Then after Colum- bus' third win in a row, they met Baldwin County and lost a heartbreaking 27-13. The next game against Shaw was a big game for Colum- bus; not only would a win put Columbus in the playoffs but it was our homecoming game. The Blue Devils were fired up and won 14-0. The game against Hardaway was perhaps the biggest of the year. This game was set up for the city championship and bragging rights of Columbus, Ga. The Blue Devils lost a hard fought game 41-19. Our final game of the year was the play-off game with Warner Robins. The Blue Devils traveled to Warner Robins with high expectations of winning and lost perhaps the hardest fought game of the year, 26-0. 110 Sports BLUE DEVIL SCORES Columbus 6 Newnan 21 Columbus 13 Baldwin 27 Columbus 13 Central 18 Columbus 14 Shaw 0 Columbus 13 Baker 0 Columbus 13 Kendrick 0 Columbus 37 Jordan 16 Columbus 26 Spencer 6 Columbus 30 Carver 6 Columbus 19 Hardaway 41 Playoffs: Columbus 0 Warner Robins 26 Rodney Anderson Jimmy Chappel Doug Duncan Sports III Brinson Gardner David Jackson Lee Ford Lee Lord took time out to sooth an injury. The opponents arrived a little late when Barry Earl successfully reached the end zone. At the end of the timeout. Coach Gaines returned to the sidelines after discussing his plan of action. The 1983 Freshman Football team had a very successful 5-2 season. The Baby Blue Devils opened their season with an 8-0 victory over Kendrick in a bruising defensive strug- gle. Phillip Martin scored the winning touchdown on an 8 yd. run after an interception by LB Bubba Green. The second game had the Blue Devils defeating Jordan by a convincing 32-18 score. Two touchdown passes by Bubba Green and touchdown runs by Barry Earl highlighted the Baby Devils' win. Game three had the Devils' defense at their best with an 18-0 victory over Baker. The Lions were unable to move all day against the hard-nosed defensive crew led by Heath Clark, Bubba Green and Kevin Watford coached by Willie Dysick. In game four the Baby Devils suffered their first defeat 20-6 against Carver. Breakdowns on the special teams and poor offensive movement, along with exceptional play by the Carver Tigers were the reasons for the defeat. In Game five against Shaw, the Baby Devils scored a rousing 44-8 victory over the Raiders. Barry Earl scored four touchdowns, and the offensive line did a tremendous job of blocking. In the sixth game a fine crew of Hardaway Hawks came back from an 8-0 score to gain three second-half touchdowns and defeat Columbus at 20-8. During the final game of the year, John Massengale scored his first touchdown of the year to lead Columbus to a 14-12 victory over Spencer. Overall the Blue Devils had a great season. Our Alma Mater So Strong Honor Untamed By Any Wrong Far Rings Our Triumphant Song Dear Old Bj Devils y JnWo£k B||gl . Earth Shall Knowtftar Worth Always Taunted Never Daunted We Are As Always I No other school had deserved a more triumphant year than did the Columbus High Blue Devils. Hav- ing risen from the ashes of a terrible catastrophe and having survived two years of misery in alien surroun- dings, we rightfully obtained our year of comfort 228 Closing and unity. The new building was nearly complete when we returned, but as a student body, we remain- ed more complex than indivisible. As other schools and other students carried on as usual, we rebuilt. Closing 229 We knew there was a binding force which would again make us one. Our belief in our future as well as our past became the support on which we based our reconstruction. Our devotion to our school was indestructable. We were determined to reattain the dignity long associated with it. It wasn’t an easy task. Daily we faced problems which obstructed our routes to our goals. In our effort this year, not simply to be reunited but to feel reunited, we put forth a valiant struggle. At the beginning of the 1983-84 school year, we tripped over new furniture while we wondered if things could ever be the same again. 232 Closing We pampered the fresh paint and new carpet while we created new ideas and tried to blend them with our old traditions. We were beset with con- flicts, with new ideas and old values. The school building was not the same as before. Closing 233 Gone were the indestructable glazed brick walls and the wide oak-plank floors. Eventually though, we established ourselves. Our concept of Columbus High School began gradually to include the sadder parts of our school history. 234 Closing Wc began to feel at home in the rebuilt structure. We began again to feel undaunted, and we cherished the traditions and continuity to which we had con- tributed. At first we were unsure. Closing 235 We didn’t quite see how to blend the old with the new so that we could be proud of the result which would forever be our heritage. But we marched on with a confidence borne of love. We became invincible and came once again to the understanding that, despite whatever trials we have been through or must endure in the future, “We are as always Columbus High!” Closing 237 THE BLUE DEVILS HAVE COME HOME AT LAST!
