Columbus Hi fili School COHISCAN 1970 Columbus. Georgia a cry resounding from every quarter “Who? Who am I, anyway?” query into identity through assessment of PURPOSE served, empathy with PEOPLE known, analysis of SELECT revered, completion of ACTIVITIES begun, relation to SUPPORTERS involved, the endless wondering timeless enigma “Who? Who am I. anyway?” Crowds. it seems there always are crowds: walls of frozen-smiling faces, the eternal etiquette of acquaintanceship, an unending trial of surface sociability. ever there — infringing, enclosing, at last engulfing self. till solitude becomes a distracted state of unfamiliarity. 3 There’s a black-white problem, you know. It’s in brown side glances and blue gla .e. It’s in new black afroism It’s in a confederate flag. It is fear and hostile defense and one-to-six year prejudice. It is color-cliques. Two cultures spewing out multi-pigmented individuals Mutually negative. 4 6 A walled stare; set senses: the unawareness of boredom, glazy spheres of unsight the tired, drawn expression of nothing. What goes on. They ask, behind these high-rise walls of resistance? Resistance? Why? and against what? the establishment? no. (an easy fallacy but error just the same.) Against the creeping, insidious infiltration of apathy it’s all around us: the unchallenge, the irrelevance the unending repititiousness. inexcusable but unassailable in its buttressed fortress tradition. Mythmakers deserve a-long-hard-look-at their creations. Unreasoned emotion for a symbol a dangerous thing at best stagnating excuse. So look at the pretty-painted-windows- in-the-big-fine-churches. but don’t make that religion — ideal’s symbols. 9 10 n Measured marches to futile death in slow blood-letting. Trying to war with guns and cannons and youth the struggle of underdevelopment. An overlong performance of a tiresome drama by mediocre actors. And the young march to a martial beat While the old insist the flag’s honor and war-heroism. 12 14 Poems about blue skies and tumbling streams and stretching-as far-as-you-can see countryside are like stories about leprechauns and fairies and Alice in Wonderland. 15 16 the Purpose 17 ABOVE: Linda Siler works at the switch hoard calling the “stay-at- home’ bunch.
