Next came a home game with Murphy, also of Atlanta, and the Devils took this one with a 3l to l3 score. Lanier handed CHS their first defeat with a hard fought 6-O score which came in the last quarter. Marist made the record read two straight defeats by a score of 2l-l2. Richmond of Augusta came to Columbus and handed us a l9-7 setback to make it 3 in a row. ln Augusta, however, our luck changed and Catholic High went down before us, l9-l2. Next came Savannah and despite the Devils' half-time lead, they came from behind and outscored the Blue Devils l2-6. Benedictine, however, was easier and CHS rolled over her to the tune of 32-6 with end, Guy Kilgore, pulling down the passes out of the blue. ln our first cross-town game of the season the Baker Villiage Lions went down in defeat with Captain Pat Flenniken leading the CHS scoring, 33-13. ln our annual climax game with Jordan the CHS l l lost a rough, hard fought game by the score of l3-O. Our season record reads four wins, five losses, and one tie, Our l l made a total of l4O points to our opponents l l-4. Thus ended the l9-47 foot- ball season. GIAA TOURNAMENT CHS.... BASKETBALL SUMMARY The i948 basketball squad under the coaching of Dickie Butler had a record of ll wins to l3 losses. ln regular GIAA play they had an 8 to lO record. ln guard Hollis Rumble and forward Jack Jones CHS had the first and third leading scorers in the GIAA. Rumble had a total of 226 points while Jones' total was l6l. Yet the CHS hardwooders were in for their share of bad luck as Ape McCluskey and Charlie Mocre were injured during the first of the season and were out nearly the whole season. McCluskey suffered a broken foot and Moore an injured knee. These injured men would probably have meant a great deal in changing the results of some of the games since both were starters. Several outstanding features that should be mentioned are the winning of runner-up position in the region tournament, and the defeat of Jordan in this tournament, by a score of 29 to 28 to break a nine game losing streak. The Columbus Oranges in the B team tournament had a record of 9 wins to O loses. The Blues had a season's record of 6 wins to 6 loses.
