With yet an inner feeling of amazement welling within and a consciousness hovering without, our furtive glance around tells us it all has ended too soon. Solemnly and suddenly, we, the Class of l959, become the first to graduate from this our most recent and modem of schools. lf for no other reason we are so marked, and yet we challenge all you that follow us to achieve more than we and thus surmount our accomplishments. We have sin- cerely, and for the better, begun the fashioning of those characteristics by which this school building shall be known. We solemnly dedicate this final effort to this New House which becomes the epitome of educational opportunity in Columbus. To this we add the challenge -- Carry on. Patchett - Mrs. Eva Gruhn Superintendent Mr. Alfred Holtz Mr. Marshall Wright Mr. Reuben Damm - President Mr. Lloyd Lange - Treasurer Mrs. Phyllis Callahan - Clerk 6 To the Class of 1959: The past school year has been a time of progress for Columbus High School. It has marked the completion, opening, and dedication of our beautiful new high school building. Although we may share many fond memories of school life in the building we left behind last November, I am sure we have all come to feel very much at home in our new surroundings. New curricular offerings have been made possible and a number of new courses have been introduced. Better facilities for co-curricular, recreational, and other services are now available and in use. And, important too is the fact that our students and faculty are each day working together under conditions which are attractive, comfortable, and inspirational. To make the most of the opportunities available represents a real challenge to thoughtful young people. Most of our students have demonstrated a genuine appreciation for the facilities this community has made available. For you, the Class of '59, it is a real honor to be the first to be graduated from the new Columbus High School. M. A. Patchett Superintendent 7 To the Seniors: Elbert Hubbard has stated that The value of an education lies in the struggle to get it. As students of this high school, some of you have had to put forth a great effort to obtain your education. Some have worked hard towards achieve ment in the curricular offerings, while others have exerted very little energy. Some of you have put many hours into extra-curricular activities, and others have not participated in any. l am sure that each of you who has exerted great effort to achieve your education will find that you will sense a true feeling of accomplishment. In school you have been provided with an opportunity to build a foundation for your future life, through being exposed to many areas of study. The amount that you have absorbed will determine to a large extent your success in life. Your education is far from complete but the foundations are firmly established. It is my hope that you have improved upon your character while in this school. It is also my wish that the building of character will be foremost in the planning of your life's work. Character is the only thing you will take with you into the next world. D. D. Mortimer Principal I 4 M 1 +V? 'Q' 3 .ED 5 -83 W ' w JAMES R. ABRAHAM CHARLES ARNONE Band Guidance, Spanish BARBARA G. Our general organi- zation and format follows that of the two preceeding years. Many various factors have made this so and this being true, we lift from them the following thoughts. The production of the modern yearbook is a continuous and a continuing process which begins in September and is complete after graduation. lt is entirely extra-curricu- lar with seemingly countless hours consumed in its production, work and worry, patience and prudence, do and design, rush and revise and finally, somehow, meet your dead- lines. We offer this yearbook to you, to read, to enjoy, to autograph, to reminisce, to commemorate. When time who steals our years away, Shall steal our pleasures, too The memory of the past will stay And half our joys renew. lThomas Moorej The moving finger writes and having writ Moves on, Nor all your piety nor wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a line Nor all your tears wash out a word of it. lFrom Rhubyat of Omar Khayyamj Administration and Organization Textbooks Gnd Nofebooks Instruction and Guidance Manuals and Workbooks Advice and Learning Assignments and Suggestions Understanding and 5GI'CGSm Report Cards and Unsatisfactory Reports Help and Hurt Absence Excuse and Unexcused Absence Assistance Gnd Sympathy Class Bell and Empty Rooms Friendship and Acquaintance Helmef qnd Pigskin Thinker Gnd Tinker Short Buck and Long Run Good GUY Gnd Wise GUY Shrill Whistle and Free Throw Leadership and S6l'VlCe Sffike Ouf and Home Run Suggestion and Cooperation Hook and Slice Theory end Experience Stopwatch and Cinders Glaring Foot Lights and Grease Paint Lifted Baton and Tuba Toot Coke and Chips Corsage and Boutonniere Marching Band and Mellow Orchestra Cap and Gown 46 W .Yr .sw q. It helps us under- stand other people and learn so many things about other countries, their customs, and ideals. This year has been a won derful year for me and for all the other students that came to the U.S. This sum- mer will be a wonderful sum- mer for the American stu- dents who are going to other countries. We shall always help A. F.S. to accomplish its high purposes. Toula This is the second year Columbus High School has participated in the A.F.S. program. In T957-58 we were fortunate in having Tatsuya Hirota of Japan among us and this year, 1958- 59 Dimitra Mertzani from Greece be- came acquainted with America through the A. F. S. During the summer of T958 Seanna Holtz, was a participant in the Americans Abroad program spending three months in Germany. The American Field Service is an organization which promotes inter- national understanding and good-will through its student exchanges. It has grown to an agency which last year sent 834 American students abroad and presently is sponsoring l, l7l stu- dents to the U. S. from 29 countries. The American Field Service is re- presented locally by a committee of citizens which screens AmerlCC1nS A- broad candidates and finds a home for the student coming to the U. S. During the first year of operation the Student Council raised most of the necessary S650 by sponsoring a Mardi Gras. The Student Council and the P.T.A. to- gether sponsored a pancake supper and bazaar. This year besides the S650 pledged to the student coming herep the Student Council has also promised S250 to the Americans Abroad candi- date. Debate I was privileged to spend the summer of 1958 living with a family in Elmshorn, near Hamburg, Germany. Perhaps the most important thing I learned through liv- ing with people whose basic philosophies are supposed to be so very different from ours is the fact that people are not Germans or Indians or Ne groes. They are individuals, to be liked or disliked their individual merits or faults, virtues or vices. I'll never forget my family, my friends or the things I learned this summer. I only wish every- one could have the same opportunity. Seanna -CHX FRONT ROW: H. Bettis, A. Myers, D. Weisensel, M. Seidlinger. SECOND ROW: Mr. Christensen, D. Koblitz, J. Kronberg, C. Milligan, P. Jablonsky J. Pachel At the beginning of the school year the A and B team cheerleaders were chosen by their advisor, Mrs. Ebi. During football season the A team girls wore red slacks and red sweaters with the letter C on the front. This year the cheerleaders were in charge ofthe decorations, orchestra, and punch for the Homecoming Dance. The decorations consisted of a red and white ceiling and balloons on which faces and names of the Football players were painted. The Dan Garson Orchestra supplied music For the dance. The cheerleaders also handled the student buses to out-of-town games. A plan was derived by which a percentage of the money taken in by the check room at games would be put into a bus fund which would be used to lower prices for out-of-town games. New uniforms were purchased for the B team girls at the beginning of basketball sea- son. The red pleated skirts were made and the white sweaters and red letters bought. Booster pins and pennants were sold by the cheerleaders this year to help raise money for the unifomis and other expenses and also to help the students back the teams. 59 U 'A 9 I Sdub I YSQSQ ,wr fa warg :ss IfRONT ROW: Mr. George, D, Schey, J. Their theme was carried out with numerous flocked trees of many colors, forest animals, and a huge snow ball in which the queen was crowned. The Top Hatters furnished the music for this Winter Wonderland. The king and queen were John Potenberg and Sandy Hughes. The members of the court were: Ken Castleberry and Jeanne Osterhoff, Charles Conrad and Connie Bystrom, Dick Salzwedel and Teresa Murphy, and Roger Tcichmiller and Janet Lange. Sandy reigned in a beautiful floor length satin gown and carried a green muff with a white orchid. Members of the court wore white floor length dresses with green cumberbunds and white muffs. This year the senior class showed what happens when a girl tries out for, and makes, the high school football team, as they presented Time Out For Ginger on March 2 and 3. This normal, well, almost normal, family is beset with a few prob- lems when their l4-year-old daughter makes the football team.
