Fr ' ' x ' ' . C DEDICATION It is not without regret that we the Senior Class of 1958 of the Columbus High School, Columbus, Wisconsin complete our formal education at the secondary level. With mixed feelings of real nostalgia, we bid farewell to This Old House within whose walls we have lived, played, fought, labored, and loafed at times, We part with friends we have loved, bid our adieus to teachers we honor and respect, leave these corridors to resound to others who will follow in other capacities. With solemn thought and honest apprehen- sion, we bring to a close this chapter in our book of life. With the firm belief that this class of i958 shall be the last to graduate as such, from these partic- ular surroundings, we feel a surge of pride well up within us. We salute all those having gone before, we have held your standards high. ln retrospect, we dedicate this our final publication to all those who have made possible these years of study and of growth . What ever success we have attained are fruits of their planning and sacrifice. To our parents, to our teachers, to you who serve in clerics and maintenance, to you who adminis- trate and to you citizens of the community we express in this dedication our deepest appreciation. FOREWORD When time who steals our years away, Shall steal our pleasure too The memory of the past will stay And half our joys renew. Thomas Moore We challenge you the class of 1959 to uphold our standards and surmount our accomplishments. We challenge you to hitch your wagon to a star and achieve far more than we. We challenge you to set the goal below which no succeeding class dare fall . The moving finger writes, and having writ, Moves on, Nor all your piety nor wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a line Nor all your tears wash out a word of it. QFrom Rhubyat of Omar Khayyami ' . NW . Awww BOARD OF EDUCATION MR. REURFN DAMM President viRS, PHYLLIS CALLAHAN Clerk MR. ALFRED HOLTZ MR. CLARENCE NINABUCK MRS, EVA GRUHN MR. LLOYD LANGE MR. MARSHALL WRIGHT TO THE CLASS OF '58 The difference between a happy person and a miserable one can usually be found in the attitude of these individuals toward their work. One invests his personality in his work and it builds him into a happy and well adiusted per- son. The other simply marks time. This has been true while you were in school. lt will continue to be iust as true following your graduation from high school. If you have earned to give your best to the task at hand, and to experience the joy of real achievement, you are well prepared to meet the challenges that lie ahead. You people are beginning your adult lives in a new age of exploration such as has seldom been wit nessed before on this globe. Advances in all fields have been so rapid that what is new to- day is often obsolete by tomorrow. For you people the implications are plain, in such a world you cannot afford to cease learn- ing. Although most of you will not continue your formal education past high school you will continue to learn from the many opportunities about you: television, radio, newspapers, mag- azines, on-the-job training, and in many other ways. We trust that we have given you the start that will keep you going. W.S. Reynolds Principal Awww AMES ABRAHAM land vlilwgiukce State College 3.5. Marsha Griffitl' TYGCISUYGF - - Christine Lobeck W! Awww 31 ANNUAL STAFF WE PRESENT The Annual Staff of the Columbus High School takes pleasure in presenting to you, the Columbus Cardinal for 1958. It has been our desire to preserve for you, pictorially, some of the significance of your 1957-1958 school year. Generally the organization is much the same as previous years but gradually there has been, and will continue to be, some evolu- tion. If nothing more we are a year older and yesterdays juniors are todays seniors, the for- mer sophs are juniors, the past Frosh are sophisticated sophomores and we have a brand new and bigger class of freshmen. Bookwise, we experimented, this year, with another significant change. Where former- l the book was printed by the engraving or letter-press process, this edition is printed by the off set process. We can't go into detail or particulars but it does mean a change in organization of work, setting up of dummies and a change in deadlines among other things. This change will be noticed by some background pages, undercover fly leaf pages, some slight rearrangement of prints and the introduction of the supplement. The supplement will be completed by early summer and will contain approximately eight pages. of spring events. We hope you like it. Next year we will experiment with greater flexibility and possibly color. The production of the modern yearbook is a continuous process. It begins early in the Fall and is not completed until the close of school in spring. It is entirely extra curricular with seemingly countless hours consumed in its production, work and worry, patience and prudence, do and design, rush and revise, and finally somehow meet your deadlines. We wish to capture and preserve for you the memory of important and vital moments to which you may return with happy feelings at your leisure. And so we offer this yearbook for your approval, to read, to enjoy, to autograph, to return to, to commemorate this high school year of 1957-1958. What penetrated most deeply? The Tackler includes articles from the Senior High School. lt covers all the social events and extra-curricular activities, news, assembly programs, sports, gossip, iokes, birthdays, and the calendar of the month. The staff numbered about fifty members. Each month the staff is given assignments. When assignments were handed in, they were proofread, and then the copy is typed up in columns. After this it is typed up on a stencil and mimeoscoped if necessary. These copies are then run off on the mimeograph, counted, assembled, and distributed to the subscribers. The ad- vanced typing class helped in the publication as a phase of their course. Our mascot, Charlie Cardinal visits the Tackler staff as a result of the creative talent of C.H.S. students. Feature stories, attractive cover drawings and inserts are also a part of the paper. The staff includes artists, typists, reporters, sport writers, feature writers, gossip writers, proofreaders, and those who work on mimeograph, mimeoscope, and distribution. Students in the Forensic Club gain experience in serious and humorous declamations, original and non-originol ora- tory, extemporaneous reading and speaking, and the four-minute speech. For those who get A ratings at the local contest, there are greater challenges at the Little Ten District and the State Contest. Considering the experience of the boys, with practically all freshmen making up the squad, this is understandable. However, there was a gradual and steady improvement of the boys throughout the season. Team spirit was always high, with each player doing his best. There were several boys on the squad thatcan doagood job for the varsity and B teams next season. Two of the five games scheduled had to be canceled, due to the flu epidemic, therefore, the B squad played on three games. Coaches: Harris, Kohlhaas 57 rl' I TJ! The squad was formed around the returning lettermen John Trapp, Bill LeClaire, Lloyd Wodill, and LaVern Brumm. The offensive game was highlighted by LaVern Brumm's long runs and pass receiving. Lloyd Wodill lead the team as quarterback and did a fine iob in passing. Defensive stalwards were Bill LeClaire, Roger Teichmiller, Ed Kessenich, Pete Van Roo and Jerry Pockel. At Lake Mills, Doc Brumm won the game for us by running back two punts for 94 and 39 yards We had our second victory from Mayville when Wodill threw a touchdown pass to Brumm. This was a fine victory for Dad's night. Our third win came when we played Waupun. Brumm went for 74 yards and 45 yards. Potenberg ran 95 yards and Castleberry for 29 yards. The Cards tried with tremendous effort to stop Ripon but they overpowered us. The Beavers had too much power for us. A 6i yard run by Brumm featured the Columbus attack. The Cards pla ed Berlin even in the first half, but they powered through in the second half. Cooney as weii as West Bend had too much power for us although, we tried hard. The court of honor consisted of Seniors: Elizabeth Salzwedel and Kathy Weiner, and Juniors: Lois Berg and Elizabeth Hogman. The players from the team also on the court were Bob Derr, John Murphy, La Vern Brumm, and Don Schey. ln the evening the team played a wonderful game but lost 20-25.
