Powerhouse of Southern Indiana The sweet taste of success was not uncommon at our school throughout 1979. The prestige was set early in the year as senior Susan Hundley stroked her way to third place in the women's state golf champion- ship match. Soon copying Susan's pattern, the varsity football and volleyball squads moved into the spotlight. Finishing their second season in- side the final eight state title com- petitors, the Olympian volleyball team demanded and received state wide recognition. Once again being noted for the output of tremendously well trained, dis- ciplined athletes, the Olympians produced a football squad which pushed their way into the final four championship round of IH- SAA playoffs unbeaten by any other southern Indiana high school in the Hoosier Hills Con- ference area. Combined efforts proved to be the element which pressed both the Olympian women's and men's basketball programs high into the state rankings. As these teams built up the power to once again overtake southern Indiana, a few individualists were also earning a reputation . Although as a team the wrestling and gymnas- tics squads did not rise to state competition, selected individuals represented the school. Becoming known as the Pow- erhouse of Southern Indiana , East finished the year with several awards and tributes. But the ath- letic abilities could not have proven as successful if it had not been for the support of the local community. The city of Columbus has now realized that East is no longer The Other School ; we have earned our recognition. After a set from junior Pam Settle, junior Maria Stack spikes the ball over the net. Shooting for two, junior center Lisa Ritzline added six points to the Olympi-Anne's victory over jenning's County. Athletic Outstanding 13
