Commander Marcel B. Humber, U. S. Navy, was born in Paris, France in l930, the son of Robert Lee Humber, an international attorney practicing in that city, and Lucie Berthier Humber. He spent his early years in France, coming to the United States at the beginning of World War ll in July l94O. Having returned to the family home in Greenville, North Carolina, Commander Humber attended high school in that city prior to graduating from Wake Forest College in l95l. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy the next year, applied for Officer Candidate School, and was commissifolnedfin Newport, R. l., in March of l953. After completing various courses of instruction, Commander Humber was assigned 'to'Conl- posite Squadron Twelve, based at Quonset Point, R. I., and served on board USS CORAL SEA, USS TICONDEROGA, and USS FORRESTAL. ln l956, he augmented to the Regular Navy asia surfa'ce line officer and was ordered as Operations Officer on board USS PIEDMONTAKAD-'l7J1 ln- I969, he served as Operations Officer, USS BENNER QDDR-8071 before coming ashore to serve as aide to the Commandant, Twelfth Naval District at San Francisco, California, in the spring' of l96l. . ,I In April of l963, Commander Humber returned to Destroyer Forces Pacific as Executive Officer, USS SHIELDS CDD-5965. Two years later, he was selected to attend the French Naval War College and Armed Forces Staff College in Paris: after graduation, he reported to the joint Chiefs Staff in February I967. From May I969 to September l97O, he commanded USS RlCHARD E, KRAUS CDD-844l, after which duty he served as advisor to the Commanding General of the Republic of Vietnam National Defense College in Saigon. He has been assigned as Executive Officer in COLUMBUS since December l97l. Commander Humber is married to the former Ann W. Kimrey of Clinton, N. C. l Captain Harold L. Carpenter, USN, was born in Killbuck, Ohio, on 6 October I924. He attended Ohio State University and the U. S. Naval Academy, graduating in the Class of I947. ln I959 he completed a course of instruction at the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School, where he received a Master's Degree in physics. Upon graduation from the Naval Academy, Captain Carpenter reported to USS WYOMING, where he served in the Gunnery Department. ln I946, he served on USS RANDOLPH in the first task force to make a post-World War ll deployment to the Mediterranean. ln l948 he reported to USS CHATTERER as Executive Officer. This was followed by tours on USS DYESS as Engineering Officer, USS- BOWERS as Executive Officer, and then as Commanding Officer of USS LINCOLN COUNTY in I956 and USS BUCK in l966. Captain Carpenter also served on the staffs of COM- SEVENTHFLEET and COMDESRON 26. His tours ashore include duty with BUWEPS, OSD, and the Naval Ordnance Systems Command as Director, Underseas Warfare Systems AcquiSiti0I1, from which he was ordered to command USS COLUMBUS.
