8 June ,945 THE DISCOVERER 53 '3 U.S.S. COLUMBUS THE SECOND T COLUMBUS A GREAT NAME IN U.S. NAVY I COLUIBUS I The new U. S. S. COLUMBUS being commissioned today is the third United States warship to bear the name The first ship COLUMBUS was one of the first four vessels of the Continental Navy, being pur- chased by the Naval Committee in November, 1775, under theauthorization of the Continental Congress. The COLUMBUS iasaid to have been anned variously with 20, 24, and 28 guns. Under Captain Abraham Whipple, the COLUMBUS sailed with the squadron of Commodore Ezek Hopkins for Nassau, New Providence, on February 17, 1776, captured Nassau on March 3 and 4, secured guns and valuable military stores. On the return vovage, the ALFRED, COLUMBUS, CABOT and ANDREW DORIA had an unsuccessful engagement with the H.B.M.S. GLAS- GOW on April 4. Later in 1776, the COLUMBUS had a successful voyage under Captain Whipple, taking four prizes at sea. On April 1, 1778, the COLUMBUS was chased ashore On Point Judith, R.I., by a British squadron, and burned by her crew to prevent capture COLUMBUS II The ship-of-the-line of 74 guns was laid down at the Washington Navy Yard in June, 1819. The COLUMBUS' dimensions were: lengthbetween perpen- diculars, 191 Ft. 10 in.: beam, 52 ft.g depth 21 ft. 10 in.: tonnage, 2,4BO. First commissioned on November 29, 1819, the COLUHFUS sailed the folloling April for the Medi- terranean, where she was serving as flagship of 'ommodorW William hainbridge until July, 1551, when she returned to the United States and was laid up Z.. .LA 11-,.-..... All hands faced forward and saluted, and all guns slowly rose, as the National Ensign, the Jack and Commlsslonlng Penannt were hoisted. After the invocation by the chaplain, Admiral Gygax turned the ship over to Captain Allen Hobbs, U.S.N. The Captain read his orders from the Bureau of Navel Personnel, ordering him to Command the U.S. COLUMBUS. He then turned to Admlral Gygax and sald, Admiral, I accept the shlp with pleasure! Hls first offlclal command was to the Executive Officer, Comnnnder LO. llsyls, U.S.N., to order the watch to be set. . The honorable Maurice J. The Columbus group displayed a great deal of pride and enthuslasm. It lshopsd that they brought home to Columbus some of the enthuslasm which they so ardently showed on June the 8th and that their city will be able to be proud of its shlp. Us, the men of the U.S.S. A public ad- dress system donated by the employees of the Timken Ball Bearing Company of Columbus, Ohio, has been in- stalled aboard. The apparatus is equipped with turn.. tables making ir. possible to play phonograph records. Through an arrangement of loudspeakers regular pro- grams will be able to be heard in every part of the ship. To start with, the ship'a record library al- refly has some 600- discs including some 200 radio transcriptions. The library will be kept. up to date an all times. There isa great. daelof talent among the enlisted personnel. This nalenr will be sought out and pun to work for the benefit of all hands. A ship's band has been organized at Newport.. The band will begin to function as soon as musical instruments can be obtained, , Every effort ,will be made to use all facilities for entertainment at our disposal.
