Beshore 80 COLUMBUS, the ten signalmen are responsible for all the visual communications of both the embarked flag and the COLUMBUS. Flashing light remained the most utilized method of visual communi- cations and a signalman could nearly always be found sending or re- ceiving messages. Their work was seen by all in such diverse places' as Souda Bay, Crete and Barcelona, Spain where while the rest of the crew was enjoying Washington's Birthday and the Fourth of July, the signalmen were busy rigging flags from the foc'sle and the fantail to the lop of the macks to add some color and holiday atmosphere to they Tall Lady.
