COMCRUDESFLGT EIGHT , .Aw RADM JA.MEsffeftALvERT, USN James Calvert was born in Cleveland,3gOhio on September 8, 1920, attended Oberlin College for 'two years prior to his appointment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis from which he graduated in June 1942. He served in submarines in the Pacific in World War II, completing nine war patrols and twice receiving the Silver Star Medal. After the war he commanded the conventional submarine TRIGGER before being selected as one of the first trainees in the Navy's nuclear power program. He was the first captain of the nuclear sub- marine SKATE and took her on both of her cruises to the North Pole under the Arctic ice pack. On 19 February 1959 the SKATE be- came the first ship in history to surface at the North Pole. A James Calvert is the author of three books: Surface at the Pole, The Naval Profession, and A Promise to our Country. He has written for several national magazines including the National Geographic, LUe, the Readers Di- gest, and This Week. In 1960 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree by Ober- lin College: 5 'Y . Kanakanui, Jr., U.S. Navy, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, was graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in An- napolis, Maryland in June 1948. His first assign- ment was aboard the USS C.P. CECIL CDDR- 8351 as Communications Officer. He was next assigned to the USS ORLECK CDD-8861 as Gun- nery Officer and participated in the Korean Con- flict until October 195l when he reported to the recommissioning detail of the USS TALADEGA CAPA-2081? i ' wt In July 1952, Commander Kanakanui re- ported to the U.S. Naval Station Post Graduate School, Monterey, California as a student in the Ordnance Engineering curriculum. Commander Kanakanui was next assigned to the USS CORAL SEA CCVA-431 as Fire Control Officer and, two years later, reported to the Staff, Commander Destroyer Squadron TWENTY-FIVE as Oper- ations Officer. In August 1958, Commander Kanakanui was rdered ,to the Naval Ordnance Missile testi-gFaei'l-ity at White Sands, New Mexico for 'utyi:,,as'G'round Systems Officer for the TALOS research, and development program. V '-ffl, then ,attended the Naval War College at New- port, Rhode Island, graduating in June 1961, when he became the first Executive Officer of the USS SELLERSIQDDG-1 IJ. In September 1963, Commander Kanakaui reported to the Navy Department, Washington, D.C., and until January 1966 served as the TARTAR missile Project Officer in the Sur- face Missile System Project Office, Office of Naval' Material. Commander Kanakanui's duty station prior to reporting to the COLUMBUS was Commanding Officer, USS FARRAGUT QDLG-61, homeported in Mayport, Florida. Commander Kanakanui has the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, China Service Med- al, Korean Campaign Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia Clasp, National Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the American Theater Medal. Commander Kanakanui is married to the former Mary Louise Meyer of Severna Park, Maryland.
