COLUMBUS' first port of call after entering the Car- ibbean was to Kingston, the capital city of the island of Jamaica. Kingston is situated by a well protected, deep-draught harbor on the southeast coast of the island. It stands opposite the ruins of old Port Royal, once one of Great Britain's most flourishing ports in the New World, but destroyed by an earthquake in l692. Still retaining its pro- vincial air, Kingston has become.known as a resort center. It has many fine old buildings, among them the St. Andrews Parish House, and there is a museum and library in the Institute of Jarnaica.
