LUE A D OLD 1966 Volume LI I PUBLISHED BY THE 102nd GRADUATING CLASS OF COLUMBIAN HIGH SCHOOL DEDICATION Columbian High School has always striven to encourage and promote school spirit in all student and faculty endeavors. Because school spirit is one big step on the road to good citizenship, we feel that Columbian has done much to further pride and respect for our nation as Well as for our school. We have learned that in a school or in a nation, democracy and freedom are the virtues that work toward a more perfect union. We know that all of Columbian realize and prize these qualities in a people, and therefore want to express their gratitude to those persons who are so valiantly defending them for us and for these United States. To the men and Women preserving those freedoms, We dedicate these pages. Fight Song We're loyal to you, Tiffin High: We'1'e gold and We're blue, Tiffin High. We'll back you to stand As the best in the land For we know you have sand, Tiffin High! Rah! Rah! So smash that blockade, Tiffin High, Go crashing ahead, Tiffin High. Our team is our fame-protector On, boys for We expect A victory from you, Tiffin High! Rah! Rah! Alma Mater We love you Columbian Highg And your memories are so dear, As the years go passing by, In our hearts you'1l still be near' Our love for you will never die, But it Will live on and ong May your colors always fly, Even after we are gone. And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too much for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embarkg For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. -Tennyson X A RICHARD ALSPACH Born Died January 5, 1948 October 30, 1962 ERIC DRAKE Born Died April 4, 1948 March 1, 1965 THARON SHEPHERD Born Died November 22, 1948 January 7, 1965 38 SENIOR ACTIVITIES ABBOTT, SUZANNE. SE IOR E ' HISTORY September 11, 1954, was a momentous date in the lives of 310 six-year-oldsg for they were among the thousands of American youngsters beginning the first of twelve long and hard, but happy and re- warding years. striving for an education. The Tiffin first graders were fortunate in having five elementary schools - Lincoln, Noble, College Hill, Miami, and Monroe. In their second year the new Washington School replaced the Miami School and one year later the C. A. Krout School replaced the old Monroe School then situated where Columbian now stands. These six years were short ones, however, as growing children became teenagers. For the first time in their lives, they were bewildered by the forty-five-minute bell that meant getting lost in the halls of East or West junior High. Tiffin's junior high students had been divided between two schools with the opening of the new Columbian High School in 1960. Competition was keen between the two schools, but this only added to the desire of each to better itself in the eyes of the other student body. Scholastic achievements soared, and athletics were stressed as the Gators met the Zephyrs each year in foot- ball, basketball, and track. These junior high years were not all work, however. The class officers at West, led by President Dick Hanna, assisted by Judy Smith, Kenny Nye, and Cassie Speck, guided the preparation of the biggest event of the three years. the Freshman Prom, Oriental Garden. On the same night President Mark Permar and officers Mel Baughman, Nancy Bero, and Diane Hill, and the freshman class were enjoying An Evening in a Japanese Garden at East. If the first days of junior high were confusing and bewildering, Columbian was chaos. Even on the first day of their senior year, some were embarrassed to find themselves in a sophomore English classg but all of them would have to agree that, though these three years have been the toughest and most demanding, they have also been the most enjoyable. Along with the conquest of geometry and world history, they found enjoyment at their Sophomore Party which was a change of pace from the traditional prom. Nearly everyone in the class joined in this semi-formal affair to Come to the Fair. Movies were shown as well as music provided for dancing. President Pam Sharpe worked with her officers, Bob Anspach, Jim Jump,.and Steve Repp, to make the evening a success. The junior year brought the selecting of our class ring, conducting the interclass basketball games, and organizing, planning, and decorating for the junior-Senior Prom, April Showers. Mike Baughman, president. advised the plarming committee for the prom and was aided in his duties by Penny Conrad, Mike Yoder, and Wayne Stephens, junior class officers. Senior year at Columbian will probably be the best remembered of all high school years. By now eleven years have sped by. This will be remembered as the year Columbian won both the N.O.L. title and the sectional tournament in basketball, the first time four National Merit Scholarship finalists were selected from Columbian, the year a girl made the final basket for the seniors in the interclass games, and the year a twin followed his brother in the office of class president. This president, Mel Baughman, was assisted by officers Mary Swecker, Judy Smith, and Kenny Nye. The carnation was chosen as the class flower and the colors were light and dark blue. For many June 9, 1966, will be an end - an end of school, of studying, of teachers, of homeworkg but it will also be a beginning, a reawakening into a new and challenging world of adulthood and re- sponsibility. All of those who have any feelings for Columbian will find a lump in their throats when they are handed their diplomas, and Columbian will not soon forget what these 215 talented, ambitious, and determined seniors have contributed to our school. Their class motto best conveys this quality: We will find a road or make one. 42 J NDERUIXSSMIN Class Friend1iness and willingness to be leaders next year are the words to describe the Class of '67. These 246 students are individuals of whom Tiffin can be proud. Regardless of the task given them, from marching on the football field in mud and rain, to assuming the responsibility of the junior-Senior Prom, there is always a junior who will take on the duty willingly and capably. This friendliness and willingness has been conveyed through good sportsmanship, through desire to excel, and through the vital role of good citizenship it has displayed at Columbian. The Class of 1967 will be remembered as one, who through its accomplishments, has learned to enjoy school life at Columbian. 44 QE? ww i W Q QQ 3 if N303 . ,gif af pw Q, ,gj K rf 7 fx, I kc v g ' . They have never been hesitant to express their pride in our school by supporting it scholastically and athletically. Through pep, enthusiasm, and school spirit, these 285 sophomores have proven themselves an important part of Columbian. Nlerging from two separate junior highs, this year's sophomores have had to lay aside any scholastic or athletic rivalries which may have developed in the previous three years. This class can boast of its efforts to erase the Gator or Zephyr attitude. Now they are one-hundred percent Tornadoes! 47 Bonnie Shaferly UNDERCLASSMEN UNDERTAKINGS Joe Blust, Bob Mehrman Dan Young, Dan Loose, Steve Roberts and Fred Moon R Betsey WISZ, Cleft! and Evelyn Conrad 43 ' I ACTIVITIES E EATURES l N Officers Anna Muska, Secretary, Skip Lyon, Vice President, Carla Lampe, Reporterg Robert Anspach, Presidentg Mark Permar, Treasurer. STUDENT COUNCIL The will of our student body is best expressed through Col- umbia.n's student coun- cil designed to promote the best interests of our school. It has al- ways been the responsi- bility of this elected organization to sponsor the A.F.S. Dance and the Hootenanny to raise funds for the Tiffin chapter of A.F.S. Advisor - Miss Dietzel Planning school assemblies for the enjoyment and edu- cation of the student body has also been one of its major duties. The biggest program undertaken by this year's council, according to Miss Dietzel, advisor, was a campaign to have an American flag flying from each home in Tiffin. President Bob Anspach and the council members and alternates sold nearly 500 flags Without any monetary profit for Columbian, as our civic program to better Tiffin. This pro- gram gave Nancy the opportunity to spend two months in Brussels, Belgium, for the most thrilling and rewarding experience of her high school years. Celia Maria Reid joined the. Columbian student body as an A.F'.S. representative from Panama for her senior year. In her ten months spent in Tiffin, Maria was a member of the family of Gwen Cunnings, a jtmior at Columbian. Linda Lather and Lloyd Lyon are our junior candidates this year to spend a sum.mer abroad through the A.F.S. Linda has qualified as a finalist in the program. Amy Wakui Though not a member of the A.F.S. program, Amy Wakui came to Tiffin from Yokohoma, Japan, in August, 1965, as a foreign exchange student. A junior who plans to spend her senior year at Columbian as well, Amy is sponsored by the Lions Club and is living with the family of Connie and Jay Lather, her adopted junior sister and sophomore brother. Latin Week The Archway to Understanding was the theme of this year's Latin Week held to coincide with the Ides of March. All Latin classes, both at Columbian and at the two junior highs, participated. The freshmen and sophomores constructed projects concerning life in Roman times while the juniors and seniors wrote themes relating that era with modern day. Latin projects displayed here by fleft to rightj Randy Dolch, Nerita. Dunn and Becky Heil are only three of more than 160 displayed on Latin Night. Randy's is a springal, a wooden weapon. Narita shows her sugar-cube temple of Vesta, and Becky made a ceramic tile tray. At left are several of the projects shown during the Latin Week display in the cafeteria. 56 ABT CLUB ... NATIONAL MACHINERY CITIZENSHIP AWARDS Ten years ago the National Machinery Company of Tiffin originated a prograxn that would recognize, encourage, and reward good citizenship in the high school students of Tiffin and area schools. One of every fifteen boys and girls in the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes are chosen each year by their teachers to represent those teenagers who are doing their best to become good citizens. Under the sponsorship of the National Machinery Company, eight Tiffin and area high schools selected 54 seniors to compete in the 1966 competition, and 25 of these shared a total of 56,700.00 at the 10th anniversary Awards Night, Aprile 18. Six of the eight major prizes were taken by Columbian students. Dr, T. Bon Voyage was the theme of the 1966 Junior-Senior Prom J ' i - ' . 4 onsored by the Jun or class on April 22nd Guests entered the vm, which had been converted to a luxury liner, over a gang lank and got their first glimpse of the scene through blue port- Jles. The decoration committee was directed by Amy Pfeiffer and lax Van Buren. Paper sea gulls flew beneath a ceiling of red, hite, and blue as couples sat along the railing of the make-believe iip, overlooking a blue sea and cloud-filled sky, or danced to the iusic of the john Kennedy Orchestra. During the evening re- 'eshments were served in the cafeteria where tables were decorated ith glittering silver champagne bottles, and tiny light houses. SOPHOMORE PARTY In keeping with their theme, Hawaiian Luau, the sophomores wore bright shirts and flowered dresses to their party April 23, 1966, held in the cafeteria at school. The room was transformed into a Pacific island paradise by careful arrangement of multicolor flower chains, tiki gods, palm trees, and even a grass hut. Refreshments were Hawaiian punch, cake, chips, and ham sandwiches. A movie, The Moon Spinners, was shown in the auditorium, and dancing in the cafeteria completed the evening's fun. Mr. Norman Grimes, class advisor, coordinated the affair's activities with the aid of Scott Kieffer, class president, and his committee chairmen. 75 - 53 - 3 S ,1 .1 Q SPORTS SPORTS 65-66 Sports at Tiffin Columbian play a prominent role in the development of solid citizenship. At Columbian, we students take pride in the excellence of our sports program. Boasting a wide range of activities, Colum- bian High is capable of catering well to the varied interests of students during the year. Before school opened, the first of Columbian's athletes began pre-season football drills, and faith- fully carried out their practice program during the season. In spite of their 2-7 record, the team learned much about sportsmanship and desire to win. When the grid season ended, basketball began. This was an especially rewarding season: our under- dog Tornadoes scorched the nets for a fine 18-4 record, one of the best ever at Columbian. The team also captured the NOL Championship and the Sectional Tournament Championship, adding two more trophies to our trophy case. At press time the 1966 track hopes are high. Our outlook for the season was brightened when we al- most upset a powerful Shelby team in a thrilling 65-62 opener. Since then we have won our meets with Willard and Bucyrus. In addition to the three major sports, Columbian supports several minor ones, including cross country, tumbling, and golf. The Girls' Athletic Association, coached by Mrs. Jean Luman, has carried on a sound intra-mural pro- gram. A boys' intramural basketball league con- sisiting of eight teams was organized by Mr. Richard Butdorf and Mr. Ernest Kohlmeyer. These sontests were open to the entire student body. 78 VARSITY - T TOP ROW: R. Williams, H. Comer, D. Fogle, K. Walker, D. Thompson, M. Baughman, J. Speaker, R. Gill, D. Fuhrer, M. Ehrenfried, M. The close association of coaches and players has helped to make Columbian High School the wonderful place it is. Even though not being fortunate in having a great deal of talent, this year's team can be proud of the fight and hard work put into each and every game. Both coaches and players have made many mistakes, but I believe that if each can profit from these mistakes, he will be a better person because of them. Good luck, seniors, and God bless you! Remember, underclassmen, that you can be N.O.L. champs if, and only if, all of you want to beg so work hard and train hard to make 1966 a banner year. -Richard Butdorf RESERVE FOOTBALL TOP ROW: A. ODER Congratulations to Mr. Groman who was selected Coach of the Year from Northwestern Ohio. The 1965-66 basketball squad has a record that will be hard to top. Their record of 18-4 repre- sents the most games won by a Columbian squad in over 35 years. They also have the distinction of being the first Columbian squad to win both an N.O.L. crown and a sectional co-championship in the same year. The future Tornadoes will have to sacrifice much and work hard in order to reach the heights of our champs. The only way to equal or perhaps even better this great season is to follow their example of complete dedication to the task at hand. Their example can be followed and their challenge met if our underclassmen are willing to accept it. The true championship quality of this squad does not end with victories or trophies, because their character, desire, coachability, and sportsmanship were even superior to their ability and accomplish- ments in their play. These young men have left a lasting mark on their coaches, their school, and their community. If they continue to follow their ideals and principles in life as they have in athletics, they will make a mark on the world as well. Good luck in whatever you do, champs! -Harry Groman The Blue and Gold staff extends its congratulations to you, the 1965-1966 NOL - Sectional Basket- ball Championship team. Your strong desire to win and your teamwork have set an example for future teams and your sportsmanship both on and off the court is a tribute to you, as a team and as individ- uals. Your team spirit helped to promote a better, unequaled, school spirit. This team will long be re- membered at Columbian. Congratulations! -87..
