Miami, Monroe, Noble, College Hill, Clinton, and newly completed Lincoln were centers of bustling activity as 240 excited children began their educational career. During the elementary years, two new schools were built to fill the needs of this war-baby overflow. Washington and Krout Schools replaced Miami and Monroe. Soon these children were no longer six-year-olds, but budding teenagers. In 1959 Tiffin Junior High Was crammed to capacity as it welcomed the largest seventh grade in its history. The following fall the class was divided to attend two junior highs-East, the former Columbian building, and West, the former 'Tiffin Junior High School. Former friendships were renewed in 1962 as the sophomores were con- solidated again at Columbian High School, where they spent three more years. Does this class history seem familiar? It should, because it is YOU, seniors! On June 8, 230 members of the class of 1965 will receive their hard-earned diplomas. During the twelve years, there have been many changes in the lives of the studentsg the road to the long-awaited graduation day has often been rough and long. School activities, such as proms, have provided bright spots, however. Blue Hawaii, at East, under the supervision of class officers Denny Miller, Don Kilen, Dianne Ballreich, and Mary Crumrine, and Enchanted Island, at West, directed by J ack Yager, Rick Bump, Cindy Moore, and Greg Evans, were the themes of the freshman proms, In the first year at Columbian, the class chose Wade Estep, Mick Mount, Mel Buskirk, and Darlene Kahler as leaders. Theme of the sophomore party was Candyland. The joint group selected the class flower, the scarlet rose, the colors, scarlet and white, and the motto, A winner never quits, and a quitter never wins. April in Paris was chosen as the theme of the prom at which the juniors entertained the class of '64. Class officers were John Kohler, Orville Alabaugh, Sandy Martien, and Bob Eisenhard. This year Wade Estep, Richard Focht, Dottie Mast, and Denny Pergram were elected class officers to plan the graduation and commencement programs. Now that high school days are nearly concluded, the seniors can remember that crucial first day in 1953 and compare it with their final hours at Columbian. The large percentage who successfully com- pleted the twelve years, disproving the current dropout rates, shows uncommon adherence to the slogan, A winner never quits and a quitter never wins. 'For Auld Lang Syne' 34 BUILDERS TOIVIGRROW' ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY The spirit of devotion and dedication of the administration and faculty has reflected upon the students of Columbian. The Class of 1965 salutes them for passing on such a spirit. 35' BOARD OF EDUCATION I Dr. Leonard Gaydos, Mr. Thomas Zoller, Mr. John Nordholt, Jr., President, Mrs. Helena Machamer, Mr. Clayton Shuman, Vice-President. Chosen by the Varsity-T, the queen and her attendants reign over the festivities. May 15 was the date of this year's Sports' Dance. IUNIOR-SENIOR PROM 1965 The old adage, April showers bring May flowers, was vividly portrayed in the Columbian Gymnasium on Friday, April 23, 1965, at the annual Junior-Senior Prom. The John Kennedy Orchestra played springtime music beneath an oversized pink unbrella while couples danced beneath billowy pink clouds. Large tulips and hyacinths surrounded a miniature park where butterflies fluttered atop big mushrooms. During the evening refreshments were served in the cafeteria where couples could have their pictures taken as souvenirs of the prom. This dance proved to be just the beginning. Having changed into more casual clothing, the couples met back at the school to begin an exciting evening sponsored by the Tiffin Lion's Club. After enjoying a movie in the auditorium, the students split into two groups to spend the next two hours bowling and roller skating. A record hop was held at the Masonic Temple from 4:30 to 5:30. A breakfast there topped off an evening that no one will ever forget. SOPHOMORE CLASS PARTY The Sophomore Class Party was held on April 24th from eight to eleven o'clock p.m. The Mardi Gras theme was highlighted by the colorful decorations. While most of the students danced in the cafe- teria, some of the others watched a movie in the auditorium. Due to this variety of activities, there was never a dull moment. The entertainment was furnished in a special program featuring the music of the Tajuns. A girls' Ensemble sang several numbers followed by two duets sung by Gwen Cunnings and Barb Thomas. The following committee chairmen should be given credit for making the party a huge success: Janet Riddle Cdecorationl, Sue Ann Loucks Crefreshmentsj, Bonnie Shaferly fclean-upj, and Kenneth Hanna fentertainmentj. The hour of eleven o'clock came much too soon to the sophomores. 78 Something To Cheer About V ' .,.-: X : V,fE5 ' ':,:4 S L ' qw E, f 1 NN fx 'ff e f 6' U W Wi R1 A S 6sQ i . 79 SPORTS - An excellent sports program is carried on at Col- umbian. You were not considered a contender for the league championshipg yet through a great amount of determination, desire, and pride you won six, lost two, and tied one football game. Even though we had a losing season, C9 - 111 this squad never accepted defeat without giving its all. Limited in size and lacking a really outstanding individual to lead them, this team blended defense and their individual strengths to help create a fine showing in the tournament. The seven senior players will be missed next year. We wish them the best of everything in whatever they do. It is our hope that their experience in basketball will make lasting contributions to their development. Columbian's basketball future is left to the under classrnen. FOGTBALL MANAGERS BASKETBALL MANAGERS TRACK MANAGERS 9 Left to Right: Bob Phares, Larry Hossler, Ray Br 1964 - 1965 SPORTS Tornado athletics officially began on August 21 when seventy boys reported for football. Victory runs, endless laps, and root hog highlighted the twice-a- day drills. At halftime in the first game, Columbian trailed Ashland by twelve pointsg but when the new image Blues hit the field for the second half, they erupted for twenty-four points for their first of several upsets. Included in the upsets was a 22-0 victory over our cross-county rival, the Fostoria Redmen. The salty scrimmaging of the junk and bullet squads led by new end coach Mr. Kohlmyer aided the Blues in compiling a fine 6-2-l record. September 9 was the first day of school and the birth date of Columbian's first cross-country team. Winning only one meet, the distance men showed fine spirit and determination throughout the season. Though the squad was predominately seniors, Mr. Grimes has a fine nucleus of sophomores upon which to build his future squads. Along with the winter snows came basketball. Having been hit hard by graduation, Mr. Groman was faced with building his squad with only two lettermen. Although lacking height, the football players were highly respected under the boards. The season was highlighted by three big wins over archrival Fostoria and a thorough defeat of our Madison Street counterparts by a 66-35 score in tournament action. Other activities were going on along with basketball. ,The tumbling team, in its second year, performed at two home basketball games. Mrs. Luman coached the G.A.A. basketball squads to victories over Hope- well Louden, Attica, and Fostoria. The basketball season closed with the freshmen dumping the sopho- more and the seniors edging the juniors in the interclass games. March found our second new sport, golf, underway. Directed by Mr. Oder, the linksmen were practicing inside until the weather would permit them to practice outside. The squad plays its home matches at the Mohawk Country Club. Columbian's hopes for an N.O.L. trophy lay with the track squad when they reported to Mr. Groman following the basketball season. The Blues have won the coveted trophy for the past three years including a narrow -15 point victory last year. The cindermen's strength was seen in the distance and field events. l 96 EAST cmd WEST EAST FRE-SHMEN CLASS OFFICERS- Left to right: K. Cartwright, R. Turner, R. Noss, J. Nobil. . s , . 5 ,. IUNIOR HIGH Forming the preliminary basis for high school, the two junior high schools not only serve to foster academic enrichment, but also have the task of originating the spirit of Columbian. 97 EAST JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL PRIN CI PAL GEORGE JANSON The goal of the students and teachers at East Junior High School is to develop the whole student -mentally, physically. socially and morally. We hope that the ex- periences received at the green and white. will enable our students to have the tools necessary to continue their preparation for adult life at Columbian. Four teachers began teaching here for the first time. As the first day slipped into the first month, homework became a reality and students became engrossed in the testing and the extra-curricular activities provided by the school. The frightened seventh graders soon felt a part of the school, and the freshmen learned to accept responsi- bilities as leaders in various class activities. Long before the doors close again in June, plans will be under way for the next school year as one year blends into another.
