The team, which was one of the smallest teams Columbian ever had, tried desperately to overcome its lack of size. Columbian Tornadoes began their 1959 football season with a close 6-0 defeat by Fremont Ross squad in the annual Preview game sponsored by the Down- town Coaches Association. Ross scored its touchdown in the second half with the kickoff. Columbian's farthest penetration was to the Ross 7 yard line in the first half. Bad breaks cost the Tornadoes their first loss of the season when they were downed by Port Clinton. The Lakesiders tallied the first score in the first quarter when they scored a TD and ran the con- version for eight points. The team rallied when Tom Frederick scored a TD but the finll score remained 8 to 6 in favor of the Lakesiders. Galion Tigers stopped the Tornadoes for their second straight loss of the sea- son by a 22-14 score. Tornadoes' scores came on a 2 yard plunge by fullback Bill Stoner and a 16 yard pass by halfback Wade. Wade also gained two points on a conversion. The Tornadoes' efforts to score du1'ing the game were stopped short by a good Galion team. The T-Men gained their first victory romp over Willard in a 28-0 game. Col- umbian scoring came on a 77 yard kick- off retum by Wade, an end sweep by 1Continued on page 67h 'Q . ,- ,mt !' Columbian's Tornadoes iolled over thc Upper Sandusky Rams to register a 32-LS win. The Toinadoes scoring came on 2-yard and 8-yard runs by Bill Stoner. and by passes: one, a 9 yard toss to Barry VVade and the other, a 30 yard throw to Dean Strausbaugh. A 6 yard run by Don Feasel, and a 2 point con- veision by Jim Drake also contributed to the scoring. The Blue and Gold continued its win- ning streak by defeating the Shelby Whippets 14-O. Both teams were hampered by fumbles, but Bill Stoner was able to spark Columbian to victory with a 1-yard plunge, a 28 yard run and a two point conversion. The T-Men also had fine running from Feasel, Frederick. and Wade. The Blue and Gold gridders received their worst beating of the year by the Bucyrlis Redmen. The Redmen who came out of the second half with a new of- fensive formation completely baffled the Tiffin defensive. Tiffin's touchdowns were scored by end Bob Hartsell on a 19 yard pass and by quarterback Bill Stoner on a quarterback sneak. The final score was 42-14 in favor of Bucyrus. The Tornadoes never completely re- covered from their defeat by Bucyrus. Bellevue defeated the T-men by a score of 22-6. Fullback Don Feasel scored the 1Continued on page 68a L. :UU FIELD ADELSPERGFFZ A f 3 ,.f,c , 1' ': 4, .,.. I .vAi',',' 5 X . Y . il i 1 -67- only Tornado touchdown on an 8 yard run. Columbian Homecoming inspired Co- umbian's T-men on to victory when they romped over the Norwalk Truckers by a score of 42-6. Halfback Barry Wade led the scoring by making two touch- downs and adding two extra points for a total of 14 points. Fullback Don Feasel quarterback Bill Stoner and halfbacks Tom Frederick and Ken Shorsher made one touchdown each, while Sager and Jackson each added two points. The Tornadoes closed their season with a loss to Sylvania in a close 7-6 score. After a slow first half Columbian came alive and scored a touchdown in opening minutes of the second half. Columbian was on its way to its second touchdown when time ran out. Wade scored the Tornadoes only touchdown on a 3 yard run. The Columbian squad elected Don Feasel as most valuable player, and Barry Wade and Tom Frederick as Co- captains for the season. Tackle Larry Wenner was selected as an offensive tackle on the All-Northern Ohio League football team. The Columbian reserves squad which won 3 and lost 2 showed promise for Columbian in the future. The little Torna- does defeated Norwalk 19-0, Bellevue 20-6, and Willard 6-0: while their losses came to Bucyrus 6-12 and Galion 32-0.
