1llllFIFIlN IUNIHIDN SQEIHQDQDIL Erected A. D. 1856 FOR OUR CHILDREN--FOR OUR COUNTRY tlnscription on the comerstonej One hundred years ago a situation arose in the village of Tiffin that is similar to the one we are now experiencing. Schools were needed for the increasing population ol children, also a place where education could be administered to older boys and girls. ln May 1855 a tract of wooded land containing two and one-halt acres was purchased from losiah Hedges. That summer Prof. De Wolf, Superintendent of Schools, went to Europe and was impressed with the castles and chateaus he saw . Upon his return he drew plans for the new building in the midst of the grove, which was later appropriately nicknamed Tho Castle in the Woods. ln 1856 the cornerstone of the Union School was laid. The lirst high-school class of six students was gradu- ated in ceremonies held in the grove west of the school. From this Union School went all the graduating classes until Columbian High was completed in 1893. The building could then comfortably accommodate the first eight grades ol District One, the overllow of District Two, and those who wished to study German. This continued until the crowded conditions at Colum- bian made it necessary to find rooms for the ninth grade. ln 1914 a bond issue was passed to remodel the west wing of Monroe Street School. ln the summer ol 1917 some partitions were torn out and others put in, the two winding stairways to the third floor were replaced by one safe, uninteresting staircase. ln Sep- tember the ninth-grade pupils were transferred to Mon- roe. ln 1923 with the completion of lunior High, the eighth and ninth grades went to the new building, and a year later, the seventh grade, Even though its architecture is unique, a building cannot acquire character and personality without people and activities. Throughout the years teachers have come and gone, but there were those who stayed many years: Theresa Pittinger, Tillie Harter, Mary Vicha, Carrie Cramer, and others. One of the rnost respected and feared was Lisette Herbig, who was principal and German teacher until her death in 1913. Her body lay in state in the lower corridor of the school, and funeral services were conducted there. She was so much a part of the Union School that it seemed quite fitting. Others who have been principal are Tillie Harter and Marie Pfeiler while Mr. Schwartz and W. W. Martin served during the Years that the ninth grade held classes at Monroe School. Monroe School has had an active P. T. A. since its organization in May, 1921 when Prof. A. D. Keller was elected president and Mrs. lda Stacy, mother ot the late Osborne Stacy, secretary. Could the walls of this old building speak, they might reveal some ol its secrets- Where do the bats hide out? What became of the skeleton? Were the school boys of those long-ago days really so bad? The walls could tell of the later activities within tha school, on the modern playground, and on the spacious lront lawn. With the completion of the new Charles A. Krout School, the doors of the Union School will be closed with regret to many who have cherished memgl-ies and associations. The old bell will no longer hqgten the lagging feet to school. Time moves on, and changes show progress. Marie Pleifer Principal, Monroe School
