Will you take With you an education, or will you have a feeling that for three years you have successfully resisted all efforts to train you? Have you established habits that will help you along life's way or those that will be hindrances to your success? Have you really tried? Have you developed an eagerness to learn? Your answers to these questions will depend on Whether you have used wisely these three years of your life. D. 1856 FOR OUR CHILDREN--FOR OUR COUNTRY tlnscription on the comerstonej One hundred years ago a situation arose in the village of Tiffin that is similar to the one we are now experiencing. Schools were needed for the increasing population ol children, also a place where education could be administered to older boys and girls. ln May 1855 a tract of wooded land containing two and one-halt acres was purchased from losiah Hedges. That summer Prof. De Wolf, Superintendent of Schools, went to Europe and was impressed with the castles and chateaus he saw . Upon his return he drew plans for the new building in the midst of the grove, which was later appropriately nicknamed Tho Castle in the Woods. ln 1856 the cornerstone of the Union School was laid. The lirst high-school class of six students was gradu- ated in ceremonies held in the grove west of the school. From this Union School went all the graduating classes until Columbian High was completed in 1893. The building could then comfortably accommodate the first eight grades ol District One, the overllow of District Two, and those who wished to study German. This continued until the crowded conditions at Colum- bian made it necessary to find rooms for the ninth grade. ln 1914 a bond issue was passed to remodel the west wing of Monroe Street School. ln the summer ol 1917 some partitions were torn out and others put in, the two winding stairways to the third floor were replaced by one safe, uninteresting staircase. ln Sep- tember the ninth-grade pupils were transferred to Mon- roe. ln 1923 with the completion of lunior High, the eighth and ninth grades went to the new building, and a year later, the seventh grade, Even though its architecture is unique, a building cannot acquire character and personality without people and activities. Throughout the years teachers have come and gone, but there were those who stayed many years: Theresa Pittinger, Tillie Harter, Mary Vicha, Carrie Cramer, and others. One of the rnost respected and feared was Lisette Herbig, who was principal and German teacher until her death in 1913. Her body lay in state in the lower corridor of the school, and funeral services were conducted there. She was so much a part of the Union School that it seemed quite fitting. Others who have been principal are Tillie Harter and Marie Pfeiler while Mr. Schwartz and W. W. Martin served during the Years that the ninth grade held classes at Monroe School. Monroe School has had an active P. T. A. since its organization in May, 1921 when Prof. A. D. Keller was elected president and Mrs. lda Stacy, mother ot the late Osborne Stacy, secretary. Could the walls of this old building speak, they might reveal some ol its secrets- Where do the bats hide out? What became of the skeleton? Were the school boys of those long-ago days really so bad? The walls could tell of the later activities within tha school, on the modern playground, and on the spacious lront lawn. With the completion of the new Charles A. Krout School, the doors of the Union School will be closed with regret to many who have cherished memgl-ies and associations. The old bell will no longer hqgten the lagging feet to school. Time moves on, and changes show progress. Marie Pleifer Principal, Monroe School 52 '1 WW News - , . J, Mr, 'S . it 33? an I I is mx nm , . The members raise money by selling novelties at Christmas time and charms before each athletic season. They also sell programs at all home basketball games. Some of the boys coach the fifth and sixth grade teams in the different grade schools. Each year the club awards a trophy to the letterman who is selected by the members on the basis of sportsmanship, scholarship, character, and general all-around acceptance by classmates. Jim Kimmel won the award last year. There are several school functions during the year, climaxed by a picnic in the spring, TRACK April April April May May May May May May May 20 24 26 l 3 8 lO 15 18-19 25-26 RETURNING LETTERMEN D. R on Bump Colors: scarlet and white Flower: white Carnation l-lomeroom teachers: Mr. lanson, Miss Dietzel, Mrs. Ewing CLASS HISTORY The crowded Auditorium suddenly becomes very silent, and quickly we take our places in the long line of capped and gowned classmates. Following an inspirational address, the strains of Pomp and Circumstanceu give each one his cue and we begin to take the last steps we will take together as the Class of '56, Yes, here it is, the long awaited eventwGraduation Night. lt seems like only yesterday that it was nineteen hundred and fifty. Memories of grade-school days, faint and mysterious, have slipped by to our immediate interest-lunior High. New subjects, teachers, clanging bells, swift-moving classes, and rigid rules strike us as we enter Grade Seven. Then a step higher-Grade Eight-with the fresh- men looking down upon us. But everything comes to him who waits, and it did. We became the dom- ineering and egotistical freshmen. Our reign came to a supreme end with the class play, A Date with Iudy and our Freshmen Prom, Stardust As sophomores of nineteen hundred and fifty- three we were bossed and ordered about by the high and mighty seniors. We elected Bill Fry, Ron Bump, Alta Terry, and Beverly Wolf to lead our class on the ladder up. The Sophomore Prom was Fifty-four held aboard a ship to the melody of Anchors Aweighf' Scornful of the sophomores, but still mindful of the seniors, we became juniors. Bill Fry, Ursel Muehlbronner, Alta Terry, and Beverly Wolf were chosen to lead us through the year of appendec- tomies. The haughty seniors were entertained with Moonlight and Roses at the Iunior-Senior Prom. As seniors the whip hand was ours and We've cracked it well. Our members have left their mark on all our school records, teams, and Clubs. The officers elected to lead the class were Paul Assen- heimer, Iudy Dennison, and Ron Bump. The high- lights of the year were the homecoming festivities, the annual Christmas Dance, the Sports Dance, and the Year Play. Many days have been spent together in melodi- ous harmony, while only a few minor discords have jarred the rhythmic score. As underclassmen we comprised the unfinished symphony of the school. Our past performance has been working up to a tuneful grand finale and now we turn to face life squarely in the hopes of working up to a crescendo of success. -Iudy Dennison Larry L. Thou must be unaware of us For you remain unchanged throughout the way Of life. The thought of you is onerous! Slow, slow'r, then almost stopped, thou seemst to me, Unreal, but still control us all. I would I had the heav'nly power, whate'er it be, To startle you from your rest, I should, Fast, faster, still you race through life, Why must our lives go by us light'ning swift? Yea, even unto death you cause us strife, Forever moving, never in a drift. . . I would, if it could be the power mine, But should I meddle in affairs of time? -Glen Boles ON THE BEAUTY OF A FLOWER I love to see the beauty of a flower, Growing free or confined by garden fair. She has no duty, worry, pain, or care, Gently thriving in her peaceful bower, Kissed softly once, then often by the shower. She knows her place in Nature's plan so rare- 'Tis she her beauty with mankind must share And 'humble him seeking only gold and power. When once her short life on the earth is through, I know that another soon will take her place .And carry on and on the endless pace That started when the world was first made new. Forever and ever a flower will be to man, A symbol that he must carry out God's plan. -Carol Ann Iordan THE PARK I live in a house on Grand Avenue, And from my window I have a fine view. I look in the park at the grass so green, The most beautiful sight I ever have seen. The trees are very straight and tall, And from their branches birds do call. In summer children come to play: They come at morn, and stay all day. They play in the sand and wade in the pool, There's ne'er a thought of return to school. Some play baseball, and tennis, too, There's always something for them to do. With supervisors on guard all day, There's not a dull moment out my way. -Carol Lautzenhiser TO AN AUTO Oh, Mr. Ford, where was your brilliant head To make the contraption you did then? .A thing that leaves you bruised and sometimes dead, A thing you can not stop by saying when. It ,jumps and jerks and roars so awful much, , Especially when you feed it too much gas. ' To drive it well you have to have the touch, Or end up under all that bent-up mass. A car can get in the strangest places, Through water and on land it rocks and rolls. lt speeds along as if it's in the races And can't stay clear of those telephone poles. While others are out ridin' and talking', I will be out, too, but I'll be walkini -Carol Miller HOMEWORK Homework, thou art a shaggy-haired villain, Who, unwanted, comes each day to me. Free me from your chains if thou art willin', Oh, please just for one day let me be free. Homework, art thou not a means to an end? You will be my end if I don't have thee. Allow me just one quiet week end spend, So that I may enjoy nature with glee. Homework, what great values have thee? Dost thou have the power to make me wise? And yet you are nought but hard work to me, Which truly my very nature doth only despise. But seriously thou art good for me If a successful man I wish to be. -Robert Rusoff SPRING THOUGHTS The sky was blue when I awoke, Sweet smells and music filled the air, The earth had shed her winter cloak And donned her fresh spring dress with care. She chose, as usual, shades of green With colors mixed and strewn throughout. The ground was washed, all bright and clean, To help the new green plants to sprout. The cattle in the fields were gay, Their worries-all had ceased to be. I heard the fox hound's distant bay- All over there was peace to see. Where goes this peace so good and sweet When men awake themselves and meet? -Carol Omwake THE END IS NEAR .I know not what to say To you, classmates so dear, When I realize that the end's so near. Soon it will be the day When you will hear them say, This is the day! So listen, hear, Today you end your high school career .And go your individual way. I stop and I measure. Can it be true? This is not the time for leisure. There is one thing that I must do And that is to say, It is a pleasure To graduate with you. -Virginia Feasel WELCOMING SPRING A light breeze blows softly through my hair, The grass is a brilliant green beneath my feet, A clean sweet smell of spring is in the air, As I come to a place where stream and river meet. The trees awake and stretch their limbs to the sky, And dress themselveswin blossoms fresh and new, The flowers are holding their heads up so high As they sparkle brightly with the morning dew. The happy, carefree brook laughs in the sun As between the rocks it dances e'er so gay, The world is awakening, for winter is done, Spring's warm breath comes to blow cold away. I walk along and hear the birds sing, It is so nice to be out to welcome the spring. -Sonjq Smith Ninety seven SCHOOL SONG We're loyal to you, Tiffin High, We're gold and blue, Tiffin High.
