SHUMAN EARL KERN CLERK - TREASURER gona!! Qjzzeplnewrl SUPERINTENDENT OF TIFFIN PUBLIC SCHOOLS My best Wishes to the graduating class of 1955! Your school years have helped you to know the precise power of mathe- matics and science, the richness which is contained in music, literature and art, and the responsibility which the good citizen must feel for the democratic procedures by which our republic is governed. The years ahead for each of you will be better for the guidance and understanding you have accepted from teachers and advisors, and will be flavored by the friendliness and kindness you have given and received. Ima!! W sewn Seven Eight FD You are living in one of the most unusual periods of history. Everything happens rapidly. It will be surprising to you how quickly the ties that now seem to bind you together as a class and as friends are broken and how soon you will seem to have to form new ones. Regardless of whether or not you go on with your formal education or go into military service or take a job in business or industry, you can not avoid a break with the past. It is our sincere hope that your years at Columbian High School will have given you something that will help you to make Wise choices as you form new relationships. N fancy Io Kirschner Colorsf Yellow and Green Mottcf The higher we climb, the better the view 'X Cgiass gfrsfory Many years ago we began our golden chain of friendship. From the hills of Kentucky and far- off Latvia new links were clamped on to join us in becoming the Class of 1955. This charm brace- let is now complete. As we look back to the hectic but happy past, we see Nancy Swearingen, Bruce Remsberg, and Margrace Prugh starring in Hansel and Gretel during the fifth grade. Entering lunior High, we finally learned our way around, and by our freshman year we felt we were well on our way. We elected Bing Fowler, presidentg Wayne Kuhn, vice president, Ioanne Bord- ner, secretaryg Bruce Remsberg, treasurer. That year we proved our talents in our class play Our Miss Brooks and the operetta H.M,S. Pinafore . Our first prom was titled South Pacific . We arrived at last at Columbian where we chose Bing Fowler, Io Yager, Sharon Herbert and Tom Keen as our class officers and chose Candy Land as the theme for our prom. ln our junior year we elected Bing Fowler, Tom Keen, Betsy Vogt, and Io Yager to direct us. As our class motto we chose The higher we climb, the better the view . Yellow and green are our class colors. The big event was the Iunior-Senior Prom, where we spent an Evening in Paris . Finally we reached the last link in our chain, our senior year. Through the etforts of every mem- ber of the Class of l955 we are certain that each of us will continue to add many new friends to our golden chain of friendship. Fourteen G. Well, it's a group of girls who get together to play basketball, volleyball, badminton, and numerous other games. Besides learn- ing to play different games, they learn the value of team work, good sports- manship, and good will by participating in the club's activities. This organiza- tion is state-wide and nation-wide, and Columbian is only one of the schools that participate. Columbian's first touchdown came as Gene Williamson generaled the Columbianites from the one-toot line to Calverts goal and ended the drive with his 54-yard run. Williamson then passed to Kimmel in the second quarter for another 6 points. Williamson again passed but this time to Cook for Columbian's second touchdown in the second quarter, ln the third quarter, Williamson took the ball and ran 85 yards for Columbiarfs fourth touchdown of the game. Ierry Frey converted three extra points. ofrfftefrn miie eagme The Northern Ohio League is composed of eight high schools which include Bellevue, Bucyrus, Galion, Norwalk, Shelby, Upper Sandusky, Willard, and Tiffin Columbian. Columbian dropped from the old Buckeye League last year while Crestline dropped from the N. O. L. at about the same time. Then Columbian was selected from a group of high schools which wished to enter the N. O. L. The purpose of this league is the advancement of high school sports which develop competition in almost every activity. The principal sports are football, basketball, and track. Besides sports events, N. O. L. has competitive band, orchestra, and choral festivals during the school year. -- '- T I-'I-'15 Bucyrus-18 Columbian-27 Coach Butdorf's debut was a success as Columbian swamped Bucyrus. This victory did not come easy though. Bucyrus ran back the opening kick-off for a touchdown. Columbian then received the ball and fumbled deep in their own territory after having the ball for only three plays. Columbian made 21 points in the second period to clinch the win. This was also Columbian's first N.O.L. win and game. Ierry Frey, Bill Fry, Larry Shaferly, and lim Kimmel, who recovered a fumble in the end zone, each made touch- downs. Ierry Frey also kicked 3 extra points. Port Clinton-32 Columbian--27 In a seesaw battle, Columbian lost to Port Clinton be- cause of the shifty running of a Port Clinton halfback who made 71, 46, and 64-yard runs to put the score out of Columbian's reach. Bill Fry and Larry Shaferly each tallied once while Ierry Frey made 2 touchdowns and 3 extra points. This was a non-league game. Marion-24 Columbian-0 With plenty of aid from Columbian's fumbles, Marion Hard- ing defeated Columbian 24-0 in Marion. Two touchdowns were set up by fumbles as Marion blanked Columbian in the best played defensive game Columbian has shown yet this year. When Columbian's offense did get rolling, they were usually deep in their own territory and were stopped before any long drives could be completed. This was a non-league game and the last one with one of our old Buckeye League foes. Norwalk-6 Columbian,-14 In the poorest game Columbian had played so far this year, they defeated Norwalk for their second N.O.L. victory. Midway in the first quarter, Ierry Frey made an 88-yard punt return to give Columbian their first touchdown. Colum- bian again threatened to score several times until the fourth quarter when Ierry Frey went 14 yards for the second touchdown. Frey made both extra points. In the third quarter Norwalk scored their only touchdown of the eve- ning. Galion-5 Columbian-7 The third N.O.L. game was played at Galion on a rain- soaked field. The game was a continuous exchange of the ball. Galion recovered a fumble in the second period on Columbian's 35 and they went on to score. They missed the extra point. Columbian recovered a fumble on the 39- yard line in the last 7 minutes of the fourth quarter to go on and score. With a minute remaining, Ierry Frey ran over the extra point. This was the third straight N.O.L. win. Willard-19 'Columbian-26 Columbian went on to its fourth N.O.L. victory, defeating Willard in a hard-fought ball game. With the score 20-19 in the last quarter, Tom Myers intercepted a pass on Co- lumbian's 33-yard line to stop the drive. On the next play Gene Williamson carried the ball 67 yards to score grid put the ball game out of Willard's reach. Larry Shaferly, Gene Cook, and lerry Frey each crossed the goal line once. Ierry Frey kicked 2 of the extra points. Upper Sandusky-14 Columbian-7 Upper Sandusky gave Columbian its first defeat in N.O.L, Colflpetition. Columbian gave a poor first-half showing in which Upper made both their touchdowns. Columbian's defense then held Upper in the second half, but the offense didnt move until almost the end of the last quarter when they made their only touchdown. Shelby-59 Columbian-6 Columbian was handed its worst defeat of the season by Shelby. Columbian's only touchdown was made in the third quarter by Larry Shaferly. Shelby's speedy backs ran through Columbian's defense for many long runs to run up a total of 56 points. This gave Columbian an even record with 4 wins and 4 losses. N. O. L.
