'THE DISCOVERY OF GOLD Early in l848 gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, about one hundred miles northeast of San Francisco, then a village of four hundred inhabitants. The news spread like a contagion, causing a great rush of gold-seekers from all parts of the world. Some Went via the Isthmus of Panama or Cape Horn, many more took the overland route with deserts and gigantic mountain ranges to be crossed. Notwithstanding the loss of life and the fact that many turn-ed back dis- couraged at the hardships of the undertaking, over 80,000 people succeeded in reaching the new Eldorado in the one year of 1849. Names of some of the settlements were indicative of their character: I-langtown, You Bet, Slug Gulch, Whiskey Diggings, and Squabbletown. There w-ere fightings and killings over anything from gold stakes to card games, and justice was often given at the end of a rope. Prices in the mining towns were so inflationary that flour was one hun- dred dollars a barrel, and eggs were a dollar apiece. Because of failure to gain speedily the riches they so eagerly sought, many trekked back to their former homes. Many others found the real, in-exhaustible wealth of the country in its farms, its orange groves, and its big trees. ' I . .fs 3' K 7 Pal 14 ' -fi ,..,- .:T..:...-- 5 ,rr s, J f x X X A-...
