The first three years of our high school career seemed to move at snail-pace, but the last took the speed of a fleeting deer. So much had to be done before our class was prepared for the great experience of graduation. Each year found our class well-represented in music, dramatics, athletics, and other school activities. A number of us played important roles as leaders and officers of clubs and classes. Others have distinguished themselves by receiving high scho- lastic honors. Like all classes throughout the history of Columbian, we, too, were challenged by the annual class play and thrilled by the senior party. The crowning event of the year was the unforgettable junior-senior prom. We shall always remember our baccalaureate and graduation services with their inspiring messages. Thus, as we leave our high-school days, it is as though we were standing under a green light at the intersection beckoning us onward to the avenues of further conquest. The defense also worked well, with Henry doing a fine job of backing the line. l..1l'nnlu Srzuiwed l'r1Jer--55 In ti 'l'he Lakeside aggregation, although exceedingly game, was no match for the terrific onslaught of our powerful backfield who ripped off yardage at will. At the start of the second half Columhian trailed hy one point, but soon drove in to score again in a beautiful break-away run by Merle McKillip. Then Hoc-rig steam-rolled the extra point and the city championship crown once again belongs to Tiffin Columbian. 'Twas the first time I sta ed in a lar e hotel Y S - I was thrilled by the sight of the smooth marble floor, And I said to m self, Now what is it for lf not for myselfy to go skating? and so I skated around, ftho not really you know.J For I had to pretend I had skates on my feet. But oh how I darted--so agile and fleet- Imbued with a feeling that no words could tell When all of a sudden-whoops-I fell! I was borne away sobbing. I remember Ja well. 'Twas the first time I stayed in a large hotel. Shirley Grill TO ANY CUSTOMER I like you But sometimes you irritate me. Sometimes I laugh in amazement At your childish behavior, And sometimes I sigh with relief, When you just nod and walk away. You make me angry When you think it is very natural To break rules, and sometimes laws To satisfy your wants. And when I refuse, as politely as is possible, You get angry, and scold me for Something I can't help. Your're puzzling When you calmly ask for nylon hose, Or bath towels or sheets. As if you've never heard of shortages And always want to know When Will you receive a shipment? As though I could regulate the Express company or the railroads Like a majestic god. You make me feel gay When you say Please and Thank you with honesty. Whenever you say pleasant things Or remember my name, And when you aren't angry because I can't supply the things you need, I like you . . . Then you're one of the sweetest persons I know. , Pbyllir Rlnoad THE POTENT INSECT I think that I shall never see An insect as dangerous as a bee. If down upon one you are set, Up, very quickly, you will get. Here it flies, there it flits. Likely enough, it never sits Longer than to sting, And then up and away on wing. Busy buzzing all day long, Get your nectar and you'll be strong. And if you feel that you are failing, Think of the many that are wailing Because of you, little bee. jamer Gabrir O' P THE CYCLE The sun is setting, Its golden light is hidden by the quick, dense, falling night. The blackness appears shutting out all her rays, And once more the night brings on the coming day The moon carries its silvery beams to the sky, And over the earth a hushed silence will lie. Out of the velvety blackness, the stars will appear, Twinkli all night with nothing to fear. Then ngawn approaches. The stars quickly hide, The moon crosses the world to the other side. The sun again rises and brightens the morn, And silently, unnoticed, a new day is born. Ertber Baker SPRING The ice is beginning to crack Along the river's edge, And I hear a robin singing On our neighbor's window ledge. The little flowers are starting to peep Out of the ground from their long winter sleep. The trees are donning their dresses of green, And among the bright leaves, a nest can be seen. There's a feeling that grips us and makes us glad, Even though the thoughts in our hearts may be sad And what is this thing which makes us all sing? You've guessed it by this time, I'm sure, It is Spring! Marjorie Zimmerman RETROSPECTION Last night my mind joumeyed into the past, And lived once again those forgotten days, Now dim and vague, but forever caught fast By time, to remain with me always. Sometimes I wish the past would truly die, And my mind could never enter the tomb To disturb its peace, wherever it might lie In darkness, and solitude, and gloom. Betty jane Zeigler A SNOW DREAM As I gazed from my window upon A blanket of snow on a wintry night, I could visualize dainty fairies Dancing with shadows cast by the light Of the corner lamp post that shone so bright. The myriad of snowflakes beneath the glow Sent shadows over the ground with ease Which from a distance I could perceive, Was like the scene of a swarm of bees Busily gathering nectar from blossoms of apple trees All of a sudden my rapture began to grow Dimmer and dimmer and then fade away until I awoke with a sharp disillusion. There was snow on the ground. It was the break of day, but, as I looked around, No more could I see those dancing fairies at play. Dolarer Young v ---1--1 - Q WALKING I love to walk on a sunny day To ponder the things I cannot say, To gaze at the wonders made by God As down his byways I slowly trod. Marie Blody WHAT IS MUSIC? Fine music fills and rests the soul That we may find and reach our goal. This world is naught but pain and strife, But joys and love are music in life. Marie Blody EL DORADO The sun I could not see this morning It was hiding behind a river of clouds A river of flowing gold, luminous and shining In the center of which was a slender, gilded pillar Holding up the indigo of morning sky. The tops of ice-covered trees were shimmering silver Casting midnight shadows over buildings Sheeted on one side with brilliant, polished gold. And the diamonds, glistening on the grass Showed me wealth in myriads untold. Why should I search for El Dorado? It is around me like the music of a symphony. jewels of beauty glisten at me from every corner of the universe- The night sky aglow with riches of every description- But still I seek the golden El Dorado that is love. joanne Mitchell OUR COLUMBIANS When basketball season comes around each year, I support it with my loudest cheer. When the two teams meet, here or there, Our Columbians always aim with care. The ball they dribble so carefully, And hit the basket in their scoring spree. Each boy guards his player with very sharp eyes, And as to their methods they get wise. When the Blue-and-Gold-clad lads take time out, The cheerleaders take over with their peppiest shout. A long shot sunk from the middle of the floor, Come on, Columbians, raise that score. When the horn blows, we're up on our feet, To cheer the Burkettmen who've won their meet. At the end of the season they've nine wins, six losses, For this years record, it brilliantly glosses. ,.,l McKillip and Henry, our scoring forwards, Clady, our center, snatched them from the backboard. Our experienced guards, Gahris and Talbert, Will remember the game they played with Calvert. With enlightened spirit they played each game, And each ball they sank added to their fame. Live on, basketball, live on forever, From our school lives, never, never sever. jo Anne Henninger WHY AND HOW? Over the fathomless ocean, Across the restless sea, Are places we lost our loved ones So Old Glory could be free. There are the unsung heroes, Who won't be with us anymore, But if we live as neighbors should, We won't fight a third world war. Let's forget all the battles And start a new lend-lease, Then the people in the conquered lands Will help us promote the peace. Edward McFerren SNOW The beautiful snow falling o'er hill and vale, Creates a scene along each winding trail. Its soft feathery touch as it lands on your face, Sends you back once again to your boyhood place, Where you woke in the mornings and looked all around, To see that the snow had covered the ground, When you pulled your small dog on your brother's big sled With its silvery runners and seat of bright red, When you tumbled and tossed with the young neighbor lad, And your mother would say, My boy, you are bad. Ah, well, 'tis now, and the sleighs in the distance Glide through the snow with a nameless persistence, Passing the beautiful, snow-covered trees With their huge outstretched branches blown by a breeze. The silvery mist from the ice-covered lakes, Is mixed with the beautiful, dainty snow flakes. Their patterns are charming and quaintly designed, Like some hidden jewel which has yet to be mined. A lengthening shadow has covered the west, Where the sun's golden rays have sunk to earth's breast. The pale, silvery moon cast its beams o'er the world While the stars twinkle brightly with gold rays unfurled. A glow to the east brings a new winter day, And still the deep snow has not gone away.
