SQ-N00 Q5 vii DEAN IOANN S. IAMANN It was Cicero who noted that the great affairs of life are not performed by physical strength, or activity. or nimbleness of body, but by deliberation, character, expression of opinion. IoAnn S. Iamann is a leader in this true sense. Her foresight and action have created a path of successful endeavors throughout her nursing career. Dean Iamann is a pioneer in the development of graduate nursing pro- grams and a specialist in gerontological nursing. She was project director in establishing the Doctor of Nursing Service programs at University of Penn- sylvania and Rush University in Chicago. She was also responsible for the development of national professional forums on doctoral education. She was named dean of the School of Nursing on March 1. 1981 to succeed Helen F. Pettit, who served as associate dean. The potential of the nursing profession rests with its most highly edu- cated leaders, said Dean Iamann in an interview. Also, Columbia has a tradition of strong clinical nursing education. Our mission is to provide national and international leadership in nursing service, education, and research through sound graduate programs in clinical nursing. This book of our past is dedicated to Dean Iamann - to her future. to the future of Columbia University's School of Nursing. and to their increasing excellence together. awgiluifamaifefiakwwa v7fi2M5iiii1,v'fZ.1F5if1N? sJf 5iw Q Q ,y ? A person must liberate himself from confinement within his private concerns. This pervades his whole being so that all his thoughts focus only on his own destiny. It is necessary, however, to raise a person's thought and will and his basic preoccupations toward universality to the inclusion of all, to the whole world, to man, to all existence. This will result in establishing even his private self on a proper basis. Rav Abraham Issac Kook -Q SUSAN YOUNG Transfer, School of Nursing, Boston University 5-Ry 5 5, P, - 4 U .1 ,QF 7 ' .
