A stream ofpeople has passed through this school. In this book we want to interrupt that flow and look at the g'I'0llp that makes up The Columbia University School of Nursing. Itls like the veiw one gets through a kaleidoscope, all the bright separate colorful pieces tall together into a cohesive picture despite their arrangement. XVe are a group of students, seniors, juniors, and sophomores, each of whom has travelled any one of innumerable paths to Columbia Nursing. As we put together this book, itls impossible for us to imagine students' reasons and goals in relation to their schooling, such things being individual and private. But ultimately we are here to develop a career, even to redefine ourselves. Much of what we've been through - poor classes, hard work, endless self-criticism - must be endured because there is an end in mind. A product will be engendered, we will become nurses. Thus, the sense of community or fraternity felt between many of us comes not from the fact that we are, as individuals, alike. It derives from the understanding that we are experiencing our schooling commrmally. And for some hard to define reason, maybe because our clinical experience links us by its trials and satisfactions, or because we share the goal of becoming nurses, we do form a kaleidoscopic whole. -lx XZ Ng!!
