In this book we want to interrupt that flow and look at the g'I'0llp that makes up The Columbia University School of Nursing. Itls like the veiw one gets through a kaleidoscope, all the bright separate colorful pieces tall together into a cohesive picture despite their arrangement. XVe are a group of students, seniors, juniors, and sophomores, each of whom has travelled any one of innumerable paths to Columbia Nursing. As we put together this book, itls impossible for us to imagine students' reasons and goals in relation to their schooling, such things being individual and private. But ultimately we are here to develop a career, even to redefine ourselves. Much of what we've been through - poor classes, hard work, endless self-criticism - must be endured because there is an end in mind. A product will be engendered, we will become nurses. Thus, the sense of community or fraternity felt between many of us comes not from the fact that we are, as individuals, alike. It derives from the understanding that we are experiencing our schooling commrmally. And for some hard to define reason, maybe because our clinical experience links us by its trials and satisfactions, or because we share the goal of becoming nurses, we do form a kaleidoscopic whole. -lx XZ Ng!! There are no limits to the expansion ofthe human spirit. In New York, amid the edificial monuments to commerce and industry, another reality is lived with. Survival of the human spirit depends upon our continued ability to protect, nourish our human bodies, heal our societal ills, and use the technology we have created for the benefit of the human race, not its destruction. Alamann Associate Dean fNl1l'S1Ilgl Dean 4Nl1I'51l1gl After five years as Associate Dean and a career of forty years with the school, Dean Helen F. Pettit retired this spring. We bid her a fond farewell as we welcome our new Dean, JoAnn S. jamann. Dr. Jamann comes to us from Chicagols Rush-Presbyterian - St. Luke's Medical Centerf Rush University. There she served as Associate Dean, Assistant Vice President. and professor of nursing. She was on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing from 1965-1976. In her last four years there she was Coordinator of the Graduate Division. She is a specialist in gerontologic nursing and has been involved in the development of national professional forums on doctoral education. Dean jamann's own education consisted ofa diploma from the Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing in 1953: then a B.S.N. in 1962 and a fNI.S.N. in 1965, both from the University of Pennsylvaniag in 1974 from the Lehigh University School of Education she received the Ed.D. with a major in higher education. Dean Alamann is the first full Dean of the School of Nursing which has traditionally been directed by an Associate Dean. Both faculty and students are developing a working relationship with Dean jamann that is hoped will contribute to continuing improvement of all programs at the Columbia University School of Nursing. il ff 11 i s t 1. This is to have succeeded. lAl1UII.l Sometimes I marvel at how each and everyone of us began as a Slllllll seed too 111i11isc11Ic to have IllllClI if any potential realized. xVl19Il I tl1i11k ofthe strength, the energy, locked in every newborn, I am awestmck. O11 a less global level, I consider lllj' ow11 existence, lily potential, and what becoming a successful nurse has meant and now IIICHIIS to 111e. Caring and giving I equate with s11ccess, and both I equate with nursing. I have wanted to be a 1111rse since I was about five. Already at that time, I sensed that Illll'Slllg was a people oriented Jrofession. I liked that idea. Da11ci11g around the house as a young girl witl1 il second-hand, faded nurses cap o11, I longed for the day when I would wear a real' cap. Now, eighteen years later, I am approaching 111y life-lo11g dream. I11 this last stretch of11ursi11g school, I am busily trying to absorb all the essential nutrients necessary to provide effective nursing care. Yet, I have a need at this time to reflect upon the growth process that has brought me to the point of putting my nursing dreams into actio11. I an1 forced to TEIIIQIIIIJSF cold winters at big universities taking what seemed to be endless prerequisites for nursing school. I thi11k of isolating experiences where I expended energy trying to cultivate roots in a profession where too often forces seemed to be washing away the ground where I toiled. Before I entered 11ursi11g school, I saw less than optimal care being provided to patients by nurses and other health professionals i11 a variety ofsettings. It was frustrating. but I moved ahead. I continued to view nursing as mainly a cari11 1 profession, until I started nursing school at Col11111bia last year. By being at Columbia, I haveilearned that nursing is indeed what I thought it to be, but it is much more too. Nursing is spiritual i11 my eyes, but I also IIOW' believe it includes a fine meshing ofall the sciences. I have learned, as a st11de11t in nursing, that caring must mean understanding health and illness i11 terms of the sciences in addition to 111ea11i11g compassion. The art of 11ursing must not be buried in the sciencef, stated Leah Curtin. While I have always agreed with that, may I add that rgeither shimulg thed I Science 0 nursing Je urie in ,fl A , the ad.
