While studying in Washington Heights, many of us could not help but be inspired at times by the splen- dor of the George Washington Bridge. In the midst of harried student days, it represented stability, strength and the continual movement of life. In the same sense, it also suggested our passage through the nursing program, with the growing of a professional identity which has served to heighten and expand our sense of self. We, the class that bridges the seventies and eighties, find ourselves in a profession which is itself in transition. We face the challenge of integrating the traditional image of nursing with the new model. One of our goals is to more firmly establish nursing as a solid profession. Lastly, we see nursing's role as a bridge between science and humanity, providing physical and emo- tional support through knowledge, skill and educa- tion. just as the image of the bridge has provided us with inspiration, we hope that our profession will inspire us to achieve the goals most important to us. 1
