QQ mime f-!:.i,.2,-' -If ' While studying in Washington Heights, many of us could not help but be inspired at times by the splen- dor of the George Washington Bridge. In the midst of harried student days, it represented stability, strength and the continual movement of life. In the same sense, it also suggested our passage through the nursing program, with the growing of a professional identity which has served to heighten and expand our sense of self. We, the class that bridges the seventies and eighties, find ourselves in a profession which is itself in transition. We face the challenge of integrating the traditional image of nursing with the new model. One of our goals is to more firmly establish nursing as a solid profession. Lastly, we see nursing's role as a bridge between science and humanity, providing physical and emo- tional support through knowledge, skill and educa- tion. just as the image of the bridge has provided us with inspiration, we hope that our profession will inspire us to achieve the goals most important to us. 1 The transition from academia Li LQ-Q :S- sg sg sg 58 I f gssslsf ff a iii in 1535555355 n al- Q.1'.Mi f ... mis!! An overwhelming majority are college graduates, with baccalaureate and masters degrees in fields as diverse as Tropical Diseases and Renaissance Literature, with all the liberal and classical arts, social and natural sciences in between. Career goals range from MedfSurg staff nurse to the nursing softwares industry. A majority of our class hopes eventually to pursue graduate study in nursing. No single area of nursing stands out as the prototype for our class's career choice. Major interests appear to be midwifery, pediatrics and community health. Few classmates delineated specific Five-Year Plans. We are vague in projecting to that dateline, but do find that many are planning on working in MedlSurg upon graduation and branching out from that foundation. We do not appear to have many future nursing educators among us, perhaps the memories are too recent. To generalize we can say that the Class of 1980 is very much a part of the new trend in nursing: combining the best of many areas of nursing to create individualized roles within the profession. We are not the stereo-typical woman in white or Nancy Nurse, rather we are educated professionals eager to draw from our varied backgrounds and resources to contribute to the improvement of the nursing profession. if' .J x We join together in one profession nursing. Why not Pre-med? Where did the inspiration originate? Will the inspiration last? Answers sometimes clo not arise so readily. We all know why. Inside somewhere is a reason, a strong, domineering reason that helps us push and struggle and love the program, even though we see faults and problems within it. The reason helps us through dissecting a fetal pig, learning oxidation-reduction reactions, studying lengthy and abstract articles, standing in lines to register, and working to establish our program and integrate ourselves into the downtown campus. The reason even helps us in our attempts to understand why the generic program has been discontinued. Perhaps we realize the value in our decision and we comprehend the underlying reason on one particular day, the first clinical experience. It is our first chance to use the knowledge, to use ourselves, to use our personalities and to allow the underlying reason to surface. We know it mart surface. Somewhere, in the midst of excitement from wearing a uniform, the thrill of assuming an identity, and skillfully administering care, we come to understand why we have chosen nursing, as a career and why we have chosen Columbia University to teach us. Will the inspiration last? Our program mysteriously disappeared. Our space in Eli White is sitting precariously on the administrators' shoulders. Our billing system somehow did not bill correctly. Our ability to integrate ourselves is hampered by the knowledge that we are a separated entity, not really Barnard, not clearly Columbia. Our money spent on tokens for the subway uptown continuously rises. Our faculty is seen less than we desire and ergo, we unfortunately communicate less. Though the inspiration falters, it will not disappear. Especially, for the sophomores, when we reminisce and marvel at our accomplishments. No more restrictions on guests! No more ban on parties! We have students representing us in many clubs and organizations! We utilize all the facilities open to us! We have become involved with countless campus activities! We have grown close as a class! And, we have a section reserved for us in the yearbook! In the two years spent down-town, as generics, our inspiration has lasted, grown stronger and hopefully will continue to flow. Lorin P. X. ,. i w. Q.-,W 2444, How to Deal With the Impossible Patient The sheets are filthy. A pillow is thrown on the floorg slippers, underwear, socks are strewn randomly about and a Good morning. How do you feel this morning? is ignored by the patient. He does not want a bath. He hates the goddamn interns, who poked his stomach this morning and the nurses, who come and go. He wishes his damn food would arrive but, when it does, he does not eat a bite because it is too salty. Food only kills you anyway. Everything kills you. And what about the sugar he saved from his dinner tray last night? Someone stole it. Probably the guy in the next bed, or maybe those interns this morning. The doctor told him he fainted because of old age. Old age! Did you hear that! Old age! Hell, he has not been sick a day in his life. Young doctors do not know what they are talking about. Christ, he has got more money stashed away than any of them! He may faint but he is good in the sack. He is ready to get married and he wants to know what my sex life is like. Nursing, as a profession poses difficult circumstances that may seem extremely hard to handle. In situations with the impossible patient, we cannot shrug away the situation, as a businessman may with a totally unresponsive client. Our profession requires us to remain calm and confident. Our own anger must be controlled and put aside and usually can surface only in the form of an understanding, tactful talk with the problem patient. Unlike other occupations, nurses are dealing with ill people under tremendous emotional strain. The difficult patients' behavior is usually not indicative of his normal behavior, but is instead a cry for help, understanding and care. To want to argue or snap back, maybe a normal reaction, but as professionals, we must pause a moment, remember our training and think of the ulterior purpose behind our occupation. We can reprimand only if the patient is incessantly troublesome or is threatening persons within the hospital and cannot be controlled. We can advise. We can reflect our thoughts. We can bring it to the patient's attention that he is a hindering element to the process of us giving him care. But, we cannot worry about the sting to our egos or the pain we experience when a patient is not appreciative and thankful. Nurses must always, first, assess a situation objectively, before any action is planned and keep in mind that our primary purpose is to give care by helping and teaching. The impossible patient therefore does not exist, he is impossible because we have termed him so. But, in actuality, it isporiible to give him care and to help him. We can discuss our feelings of frustration and try to discover reasons for his behavior and then implement care accordingly. ln this way, the patient is not impossible to us and we are not impossible to him.
