APPICNDIX A The Presbyterian Cap Tm: Presbyterian cup was selected by Anna C. Maxwell in 189: when the blue- and-white-stripcd uniform was designed for the school. The cap chosen by Miss Maxwell has an entirely American tradition, having been designed from the 'Puritan maiden's cap. ln 189: the hair was combed , ef in a pompadour and top-knot. The cap was made of soft lawn, had a few gathers on top to fit over the ni topknot of hair, and was wom forward on the ff 'ZX pompadour. The caps were handsexm and never ig l H sf 1123 I Q32 laundered, and were easy to pack for the nurses 'fi' ' ' going into the homes on private duty. At the time of the Vibrld Hhr I it was decided that the caps should be laundered instead of being replaeedf' The P.H. cap of line India linen is still handmade in the sewing room at Maxwell Hall from which graduates and students may obtain replacements. A satisfactory starching is obtained by dipping the ap into the lbllowing solution. One heaping teaspoon of quick elastic starch to Eff cup cold water for mking and an additional L1 cup hot water. For greater stiffness allow to dry and dip again. The cap is ironed completely Hat except for M inch pleat in the center back which tapers to nothing at the top. The front piece is turned back 3 inches showing iust a bit ot' the crown. 'nie PH. cap is wom with the lower border held on a level with the top of the ears by small whitehcaded pins.
