Wfhat you build upon and what you build with are in constant change, for knowledge of your ignorance will always leave you striving. That which you build toward will be your goal. Transformation is not to you alone, but to all that is about you. The world does not survive on stagnation, but a discontentment within contentment. Nursing will change around a core of caring. giving, and satisfaction to meet the demands of the society for which it cares, Programs here have changed to meet the needs of an educated public and increased medical knowledge, but more importantly, to meet the needs of the patient. The individual will change with greater knowledge and insight. Transformation will continue because of us or in spite of us. Our dedication of this book, which is a chronicle of our transformation, to Laurie Verdisco, was not without purpose, for in times of such rapid transfor- mation, a person who cares, understands and gives is invaluable.
