I do not urge that the courses of study be extended but that the students initiate for them- - selves independent investigation a.ong the lines of their prescribed work, thus the student of Literature may gain not only added information but added inspiration which always comes through original investigation. The student of Mechanics cannot with the best results confine himself strictly to the work of the lecture room,-once the elementary principles are in hand his course should be extended to the field of observation and of actual things accomplished-so in all profes- sions, and particularly in the Fine Arts, the artist must, after preliminary training, familiarize himself with the greatest examples and, through his own efforts, gain a mastery of technique and composition. There is still much to be desired in the technical branches of our general educational system through its failure to produce craftsmen-we need educated crafts- men-men who can design and who can execute as well. The opportunities in this direction open to the college man are practically unlimited. I I l
