lu the 0112155 nf 1915 AM gratefully sensible of the courtesy of your request fag, rib that some word from me should be included among the mementoes of your student years, and it is with sincere M N pleasure that I become once more a contributor to the 2' e5 COLUMUIAN gli? ' . 'YB 4' f' As one of the most searching tests of a man's char- acter is in the way in which he spends his leisure,- in that to which he turns when he is free to turn where he will,-so the an- nual COLUMBIAN, with its record of those rich and diversified activities that have filled your hours outside of lecture hall and laboratory, gives an in- sight into the vital and expansive spirit of Columbia which cannot be gained from its catalogues or the announcements of its courses. VVe cannot define that spirit. But we can feel its contagion. And as we open ourselves to its influx, we learn its reality and its quit-kening power. Through it we begin to live more widely and more gener 'G we did before. To many underclassmen, I fancy, this new breadth and generosity of life seem the best gifts that the University can bestow. VVe are wise to value them more than much learning, for they open the heart as learning opens the mind. But if they were all, Columbia would not make the men she does. Breadth would be but the cloak of shallownessg generosity the mask of dissipated energies and spendthrift waste. The true spirit of Columbia must make our lives deep as well as wide, must give to our man- hoodfixity and intensity of purpose, no less than generosity of aim to our youth. lt is this steadfastness of purpose and concentrated endeavor which should come to you as upperclassmen, which should seal your lives with Columbia's great seal, and make her spirit yours and you her sons, through the discipline of unremitting eHort in the routine of daily tasks. So, and so only, may you take your place among those by whom Colum- bia has been maintained and cherished from generation to generation for the advancement of the public good and the glory of Almighty Godf' 7' 46944 Lima, Q7-
