Gln the Zinarh nf iihiinrz nf 1915 Glnlumhizm V I-IE CoLUAii:LxN has always seemed to me to be one of the most informing and valuable evidences of student activ- ity and devotion, and I ani particularly interested in the CoLUM1ai,xN for IQI5, because it is dedicated to one of my oldest and best friends in the University, Professor Ralph Edward Mayer. I know of no one who gives more of himself to the students, in time and labor and sympathy, and I congratulate the members of your Board upon their recog- nition of this fact. Very truly yours,

Glu the Qllaaa nf 1915 , f' A HERE is always a melancholy interest that attaches to a new issue of the COLUMBLAN. It is that another class is preparing to take its departure. To the instructor it Wxfag' means often that man friendshi s beffinninff to form 5 fab ., , 65 in Y P zz- Q are interrupted. ' Aq ' Cn the other hand it means that the class is leaving its mark on the growing tradition of the University. The high standard of the COLUMBIAN is maintained. The persistent ex- cellence of the publication is .a constant surprise. lt means the maintain- ing of the Columbia spirit and one may hope its elevation. It is to the Iunior and Senior classes that the University looks for the perpetuation and enrichment of that spirit. The fair name of the institution before the pub- lic is in their keeping pre-eminently. Wfhen a class becomes junior it passes out of the irresponsible into the-may l call it-sacred groupe. The Student Board is soon to be yours and with that the order and temper of the student body will be yours to determine. The graduate and professional schools, the alumni, the larger public is looking to you. There is no fear but that you will do well, when the sceptre of authority becomes yours. 7
