Ulu the Stuhents uf the junior Glass S Director of the Summer Session and representing the great body of students who are in attendance in the summer, I wish to thank you for your request for this letter, and the recognition, which it implies, of those whose connection with Columbia is limited to the short term of the academic year. - These students are loyal supporters of Columbia and fully recognize the advantages which the University has so liberally placed before them. lVIany of them return summer after summer and count their stay at the Uni- versity as a bright episode in their career. Others remain, attracted by the opportunities offered, after considerable hardship experienced in securing funds, for a longer residence. Nothing that the University has accomplished within the past ten years is more praiseworthy than the establishment of the summer courses and the generous opportunities thus presented to these appreciative stu- dents. It is this broad, unseltish spirit which is character- istic of the great Columbia of today, and it is this con- sideration for the highest welfare of others which you, who are entering upon your third year of undergraduate Work, should receive from your Contact with the institu- tion which claims your allegiance. I cannot do better than to wish for you the attainment of a broad humani- tarianism which should be the result of the training in our University. t Very truly yours, G mf
