Jmportcmt 'Events of 1907-1908 BRIEF retrospect of important events at Columbia during the year i907-l908 brings to the foreground' three or four of these which are of special interest to all concerned in the welfare of the University. Perhaps the one event of the past year which is considered by undergraduates and alumni alike as of greatest importance was the partial restoration of football by the authorities, Late in October, l907, the Faculty Committee in charge of athletics granted the right to play intra- mural football and the announcement was received with delight by the student bodyg for, ever since the abolition of the game in l905 the Columbia students have fought earnestly and consistently for its restor- ation: and though we have not yet regained the right to play inter-collegiate football, intra-mural football is looked upon as a long step toward the goal desired. If the undergraduates, assisted by the alumni, con- tinue in their fight as they have begun, it will be, we hope, but a question of a short time when Columbia will have regained her position among the Big Six on the gridiron. The Mock Republican Convention, which was held on November 26, l907, under the direction of Professor Beard and his class in politics 3-4, was watched with great interest by the other large univer- sities as the first thing of the kind ever attempted on such a large scale. With The Honorable Timothy l... Woodruff presiding, some eight hundred men assembled in the gymnasium, and after the several speeches of nomination elected Governor l-lughes of New York on the second ballot as Republican nominee for the presidency of l90S. A third interesting feature of the year was the scheme of giving the seniors their exams. and holding other classes, while it had its disadvantages was at new method of holding the final examinations. The the Commencement before the final exams. for the least beneficial in that practically the entire University was on hand to welcome the visitors and returning alumni on Commencement Day. l907-l908 was besides full of the customary events of the College year, such as the various athletic meets, the debates, the dramatics, and the social activities, all of which are noted elsewhere in this book. The surprise of the season was the dissolution of the Inter-collegiate Basket Ball League, owing to the withdrawal from it of Yale and Princeton. t I5
