In looking through the interesting rooms of the Popular Shop of joseph P. McHugh 8 Co., in Forty-second street, at Fifth avenue, the variety of artistic objects for home adornment seems so great that one is at first impressed with the idea that an exhibition so apparently versatile must result from the combined efforts of many men. A more careful survey of the fabrics, furniture, pot- tery, and works in metal discovers a certain agreement of character, and a tendency to blend in design and color, although the collection is obviously brought together from sources widely apart. The explanation is found in the fact that the sole selection of the things which go to make up this unique exposition of the household arts of many lands is in the hands of Mr. McHugh, whose ideas and designs are also used in the stuffs and furniture of home manufacture, character- istic of this remarkable shop. To those in quest of gifts original in conception and decorative in signih- cance, a specially attractive feature is the assurance that the things of the Popular Shop are not to be had elsewhere, and the sources of supply are such that an entirely novel show of unduplicated creations is set forth with the coming of each holiday time. This season's exhibition represents the result of Mr. McHugh's annual trip abroad, and indicates the most recent eiforts of industrial art in the older countries, collected with reference to the present ideas of deco- rative treatment, as expressed in American homes.
